PREBEND

Church of West Wittering (W. Suss.); bp.'s manor 1086 (DB I 17a, 'Westringes'; for the earlier history, see AS Chs. of Selsey nos. 1, 7, 20). First reference to preb., with chapel of Itchenor, 6 Oct. 1174 × c. 26 Apr. 1180 (Acta no. 65; cf. no. 110). Vicarage of West Wittering first mentioned when Seffrid was treas. and this preb. 1187 × 97 (Chart. Chichester no. 754). For Wittering and East and West Itchenor, see Inq. Non. pp. 357b, 366.

Ordinance of bp. Ralph de Neville (1224-44) reserved this preb. for a canon capable of lecturing in theology in the Close (Chart. Chichester no. 460; see also below). Rulings by later popes: Clement VI, 30 March 1351; Gregory XI, 28 Nov. 1373 (Chart. Chichester nos. 919, 920; cf. CPL IV 190).

Seffrid (fn. 1)

Nephew of dean (later bp.) Seffrid II, first occ., not yet canon, c. 1177 × c. 26 Apr. 1180 (Acta no. 68). (fn. 2) Occ. as canon c. 1187 (Chartulary of... Boxgrove, ed. L. Fleming (Suss. Rec. Soc. lix, 1960) no. 7; for the date see Acta p. 138) and 16 Nov. 1180 × Dec. 1190 (Acta no. 138). Treas. by 1189, last occ. March 1196 (list 6). Occ. as this preb. as treas., 1187 × 97 (Acta no. 110; Chart. Chichester no. 754). Dean by 1197/8; last occ. after 8 March 1198, and had been succeeded before Feb. 1201 (list 2).

M. William Ruffus

A theologian, collated to this preb. by bp. [Ralph de Neville, 1224-44], with obligation to lecture in theology (Chart. Chichester no. 460). Occ. as canon c. 1235 (Chart. Sele no. 51), 1239 × 44 (Chart. Chichester no. 438), and Dec. 1242 (ibid. no. 505). Died before 1 Feb. 1244 (ibid. no. 460). (fn. 3) Arrangement for his anniversary 29 Nov. 1250 (ibid. no. 606).

M. John de Reigate

Chanc. of Oxford university, occ. Nov. 1239 and still in office Apr. 1241 (Biog. Ox. III 1564). Collated to this preb. by bp. [Ralph de Neville] on death of William Ruffus; presum. fulfilled obligation to lecture in theology (Chart. Chichester no. 460). First occ. as canon 31 Jan. 1244 (full name in Liber B fo. 66v, Liber E fo. 192v, not given in cal. Chart. Chichester no. 211). Also occ. as canon 1246/7 (Chart. Chichester nos. 502, 508, 562). Archdcn. of Chichester by 23 July 1247; last occ. 4 Nov. 1256 (list 8). Died as this preb. before 24 Aug. 1259 (Chart. Chichester no. 460).

M. John de Coruleto

Preb. Selsey (list 30), transf. to this preb. to which he was collated by bp. John of Climping (1254-62), in succession to M. John de Reigate, so after 4 Nov. 1256 (Chart. Chichester no. 460). But his tenure of this preb. opposed by dean and chapter, on the grounds that he was not capable of lecturing in theology; settlement of 24 Aug. 1259 allowed him to retain preb. and not lecture (ibid.). Occ. as canon frequently in 1260s. Last occ. 19 Oct. 1272 × 5 Apr. 1279 and c. 1275 (ibid. nos. 637, 663). Perhaps to be identified with M. John 'de Coudre', who occ. as canon 29 June 1267 (preb. unident., list 42).

M. Richard of Arundel

First occ. as canon and this preb. 16 Nov. 1298 (Chart. Chichester no. 1098). Still alive 2 Nov. 1301 (ibid. no. 709). Died by 14 June 1305 (CPR 1301-7 p. 364; also 2 Fasti VII 48).
