Prebendaries

PREBEND

Corpus of preb. in Chichester. First reference to preb. 1291.

Rumboldswhyke held by earl Roger 1086 (DB I 24b, 'Wiche'). Glebe in Rumboldswhyke (outside Southgate, Chichester) part of preb. (Chart. Chichester no. 751, undated; cf. Valuation 1535 p. 166, 'Weeke').

Glebe in Treyford part of preb. in 1535, when together with the glebe in Rumboldswhyke, it was farmed for £2 (Valuation 1535 p. 166) and is not therefore likely to be the same portion as the large holding of two hides in Treyford held of earl Roger by a certain Robert in 1086 'in prebenda ecclesie de Cicestre' (DB I 23b; see Acta p. 42, and cf. no. 9, discussed above, Introduction, at nn. 25-7).

Land and tenements in Slinfold (W. Suss.) adjudicated as property of this preb. 16 Sept. 1251 (Close R. 1247-51 p. 557; cf. ibid. p. 499).

Subdcn.-preb.

Valuation 1291 £6 13s 4d (Taxatio p. 137b).

PREBENDARIES

? Robert

First preb., occ. 1086, if DB I 23b is to be interpreted as meaning that two hides in Treyford, held by Robert as preb. of church of Chichester, were prebendal in the ecclesiastical sense (so understood by Mayr-Harting, Acta p. 42). But Robert not called canon (for discussion see above, Introduction, at nn. 25-7).

M. William of Kilkenny (fn. 1)

Occ. as this preb. 6 Sept. 1251 and 4 Apr. 1253 (Close R. 1247-51 p. 499; ibid. 1251-3 p. 462). Also preb. of Dublin, Kilkenny, St Paul's, London, and Salisbury (1 Fasti 1066-1300 IV 137); archdcn. of Coventry; treas. of Exeter. Royal chanc. 1250-55, and controller of wardrobe 1249-52 (Tout, Chapters VI 5, 27). Bp. of Ely, el. Sept. 1254, temps. 25 Dec., cons. 15 Aug. 1255 (ibid. II 46).

Next identified preb. is Ralph le Dortorier, who had papal prov. to next vacant preb. 2 July 1331, and exchanged this preb. for church of Witley (Surrey) by 7 Dec. 1333 (2 Fasti VII 33).
