Church of Eartham (W. Suss.; not in DB, but cf. AS Chs. of Selsey no. 19) granted by bp. Hilary to canon Richard the chapl., but not as preb., 3 Aug. 1147 × 1157 (Acta no. 28). Disputed by canon Luke, claiming it as preb.; created preb. for him by bp. John, 6 Oct. 1174 × Dec. 1178, with addition of 3 marks from archdcnry. of Lewes, tithes in Bishopstone (E. Suss.; see preb. Highleigh, list 22) and a house in Chichester (Acta no. 61; cf. also no. 89). See Inq. Non. pp. 355-6; Valuation 1535 p. 167; VCH Suss. IV 152-4.

Already canon, claiming Eartham as his preb., when preb. created for him 6 Oct. 1174 × Dec. 1178 (Acta no. 61). (fn. 1) Treas. by 16 Nov. 1180 × 15 Nov. 1181, and had been succeeded by [1189] (list 6). Referred to as treas. and this preb., evidently already dead, 1187 × 97 (Acta no. 89).

Richard the chaplain

Collated to this preb. by bp. Seffrid II 1187 × 97, in succession to Luke (Acta no. 89), but already canon, first occ. 16 Nov. 1180 × 28 Oct. 1185 (ibid. no. 76). (fn. 2) Occ. several times. Last occ. no later than his collation to this preb., 1187 × 97 (ibid. no. 89; cf. ibid. no. 84 of 1192/3, and Chart. Chichester no. 1069 of 1186 × c. 17 March 1204). (fn. 3)

Next identified preb. is William of Amberley, who occ. 5 March 1318 and 1330 (2 Fasti VII 19).
