PREBEND
Wilsford among lands of earl Hugh of Chester 1086 (DB I 68d). Church of Wilsford (Wilts.) (fn. 1) gr. to cans. by bp. Osmund 1091 (carta), conf. by pope 26 Nov. 1146 (PUE II no. 53 p. 209). Settlement with earl of Chester over tithes of chapel of Wilsford, before 1153 (see Roger, below). So presum. by this time Wilsford a chapel of Woodford (now Middle Woodford, not in DB), immediately to the south of Wilsford. Woodford bp.'s manor by c. 1210 (Interdict Docs. pp. 16, 20).
Preb. prob. in existence c. 1150 (Psalter list). Called preb. Woodford 1187 and chiefly throughout 13th century, although called Wilsford c. 1270 (C. 461). Preb. consisted of church of Woodford, with chapel of Wilsford, lands and tithes (see IV/E.5/Prebend of Woodford & Wilsford/1; VCH Wilts. VI 216-17; Reg. Gandavo II 778), and possibly land in Stratford-sub-Castle (Old Sarum)(see Cart. St Denys Southampton, ed. E. O. Blake (Southampton Rec. ser., xxiv, xxv, 1981) II no. 408, cf. ibid. no. 405).

Preb. 'Wudeford', presum. vacant, accounted for £4 4s. 9d. in 1187 (PR 33 Hen. II p. 187).

First occ. as can., sent to dioc. Ely to collect alms for the new cathedral, Dec. 1219 (RSO II 12). Chanc. by 20 Sept. 1220, dean by 24 Feb. 1237/8 (lists 4, 2). Occ. this preb. as chanc. Nephew of Berard of Naples (preb. Durnford, list 29), prov. 11 July 1275 to canonry and preb. vacated by Gerard de Grandisson, bp.-el. of Verdun (Rymer I (2) 526; cf. Reg. Gandavo I 170, where in 1305 he was said to have been coll. '40 years ago'). Occ. this preb. May-June 1284 (app. 2). D. as this preb. 'decrepit and full of days' by 2 Nov. 1305 (Reg. Gandavo I 170).
