PREBENDARIES

It is not until Jan. 1329 that the holders of this preb. can certainly be distinguished from the holders of Borealis, but from that time the succession can be traced backwards in Reg. Martival I 387-8 and Reg. Gandavo II 805, 715, 640, 579, to William de Braybrok, who occ. 1297-8 (2 Fasti III 21, and below). If 'Alton Pancras' is to be identified with Australis, and 'Archidiaconi' with Borealis, the earlier succession in the two prebs. would be as below.

[Gilbert de Axminstre

Occ. as one of two prebs. of Alton, perhaps this preb., Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (app. 1). Presum. to be identified with Gilbert of Stalbridge, (fn. 1) who cannot otherwise be assigned to a preb.: he was still a clk., parson of Stalbridge, 26 March 1222 (RSO I 323), but was can. by 15 Aug. 1226 (ibid. II 60). Occ. several times. Last occ. 31 Dec. 1236 (Cart. Glastonbury I 63).]

[M. Roger Baret

Not called can. when res. a church in this dioc. before 7 Oct. 1280 (CPR 1272-81 p. 398). First occ. as can. 9 Oct. 1282 (Reg. Epp. Peckham II 420). Occ. as preb. 'Awelton Sancti Pancratii' May-June 1284 (app. 2). Also can. of Exeter and Wells. Last occ. 10 May 1288 (app. 3). As rector of Launton (Oxon.), d. by 6 Oct. 1292 (Reg. Sutton VIII 178). Commem. 8 July (Exeter obit.: Exeter D. & C. MS 3625 fo. iv r), 12 July (Exeter obit.: BL, Harley MS 863 fo. 4r). Perhaps to be identified with man of same name who was presented by abbot of Glastonbury to St Stephen's, Bristol, 1262, and to Street 1268-9 (Longleat Muniment 10590 fo. 12r), and also occ. as clk. of Exeter dioc. 1264 (Reg. Urbain IV no. 1971, cal. CPL I 414).]

William de Braybrok

Not called can., occ. as rector of Wittenham, beneficiary and executor of bp. Nicholas Longespee's will, dated 14 Feb. 1295/6 (EHR xv (1900) 525, 526). First occ. as can. 2 March 1297 (CCR 1296-1302 p. 92). Transf. from this preb. to preb. Beminster I, coll. 11 Aug. 1298 (list 18).

M. Walter Burdon (fn. 2)

Coll. to preb. previously held by William de Braybrok, 22 Sept. 1298 (Reg. Gandavo II 579). Also archdn. of Gloucester from 1295 (1 Fasti II 109). Transf. to preb. Horton, coll. 18 Nov. 1304 (Reg. Gandavo II 639-40).
