The preparation of Fasti for the eight dioceses covered by this volume has been greatly assisted by the generous help of many scholars. I wish to record my thanks to archivists and experts in the various dioceses, and particularly to Miss B. Dodwell (Norwich), Professor H. S. Offler (Carlisle and Durham) and Mr. M. Snape (Durham), who have allowed me to use material collected in their own researches. I have benefited, too, from the helpful criticisms and learned suggestions made by Professor C. R. Cheney and Miss Jane Sayers, who both read the draft and saved me from many errors. Mrs. Audrey Cornwall typed the difficult manuscript with great skill and patience. From first to last Professor C. N. L. Brooke has encouraged the work, lending his own notes on the early dignitaries and giving much valuable help at every stage.
