First preb. in cats., 'Decanus Wulmannus'. Does not occ. as can., but occ. as dean [1086 × 1107]. (Cf. below, App. I)

Ranulph Flambard

Occ. in cats. between Wulman and Humphrey Bigod, 'Rannulfus Dunelmensis episcopus'. Does not occ. as can. Occ. as tenant of bp. of London in Stepney, 1086 (Domesday Book 1 fo. 127a). Possibly dean c. 1100 (see below, App. I). Bp. of Durham, June 1099-Sept. 1128.

Humphrey Bigod

Occ. in cats. between Ranulph Flambard and William de Mareni, 'Humfridus filius Rogeri Bigod'. Does not occ. as can. Prob. royal chapl. from 1101 to 1112 or 1113 (Regesta 11 p. x, nos. 544-1015; see below, App. I).

William de Mareni

Occ. in cats. between Humphrey Bigod and Ralph of Langford, 'Willelmus de Mareni'. Does not occ. as can. Prob. to be identified with William, dean by July 1111, to d. in Apr. 1138, who must therefore have transf. from preb. of Chiswick to this preb., prob. after 1112 or 1113. (Cf. below, App. I)

M. Ralph of Langford (fn. 1)

Occ. in cats. between William de Mareni and Hugh de Mareni, 'Radulfus de Langeford'. Prob. transf. to this preb. from preb. of Brownswood on becoming dean, after Apr. 1138. D. as dean between c. 1154 and May 1162.

Hugh de Mareni

Occ. in cats. between Ralph of Langford and Ralph de Diceto, 'Hugo de Mareni [Marenis, Cat. II]'. Presum. transf. to this preb. from an unident. preb. (which he had held as can. 1150/1, and as archdcn. of London from before c. 1154, to March 1157 or later (see below p. 90)), on becoming dean between March 1157 and May 1162. Presum. d. in June 1179 or June 1180.

M. Ralph de Diceto (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between Hugh de Mareni and Alard de Burnham, 'Radulfus de Diceto [Disceto, Cat. II]'. Presum. transf. to this preb. from an unident. preb. (which he had held as archdcn. of Middlesex, from before c. June 1153 (see below p. 90)), on becoming dean between Jan. 1180 and Jan. 1181. Occ. in this preb. [c. 1180 × 1192] (Gibbs nos. 261, 308). (fn. 3) D. or res. as dean between May 1199 and May 1201.

M. Alard de Burnham (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Ralph de Diceto and William son of Robert, 'Alardus de Burneham [Burnham, Cat. II]'. Transf. to this preb. from preb. of Caddington Major, on becoming dean between June 1199 and May 1201. Possibly transf. to preb. of Holbourn between 1215 and his d. in Sept. 1216.

William son of Robert

Occ. in cats. between Alard de Burnham and Geoffrey de Lucy 'Willelmus filius Roberti'. First occ. as can. [Apr. 1221 × March 1226] (Statutes p. 185). (fn. 5) Last occ. 14 Dec. 1237 (Cart. Colec. 1 97). D. as preb. by 1241, prob. c. Dec. 1238 (A/11/1072; cf. Statutes p. 187).

M. Geoffrey de Lucy

Occ. in cats. between William son of Robert and John Maunsel, 'Galfridus filius decani'. Entry in cats. must refer to Geoffrey de Lucy, dean, who is known to have succeeded William son of Robert in this preb. and prob. transf. to this preb. from preb. of Islington before 9 Feb. 1239 (Statutes p. 187; see M. G. Cheney, in E.H.R. lxxxii (1967) 757-8). D. as dean and preb. Nov. 1241 (C.C.R. 1237-42 p. 377).

John Maunsel

Occ. in cats. between Geoffrey de Lucy and Richard de Gravesend I, 'Johannes Maunsel'. Royal gr. of this preb. in succession to Geoffrey de Lucy, 28 Nov. 1241 (C.C.R. 1237-42 p. 377; cf. similar gr. of 10 Dec., in C.P.R. 1232-47 p. 268, which presum. cancelled effect of gr. of preb. of Caddington Minor, 8 Dec.). Possibly also preb. of Hoxton, c. 1261-62. Also chanc. from May 1243 to d. in Jan. 1265.

M. Richard de Gravesend I

Occ. in cats. between John Maunsel and Antony Bek, 'Ricardus de Gravesende [Gravesande, Cat. II]'. Occ. as archdcn. of Essex 18 Jan. 1271/2. Occ. as can. 9 May 1280 (C.P.R. 1272-81 p. 369). Bp. of London, el. Apr. or May, cons. Aug. 1280.

Antony Bek

Occ. in cats. between Richard de Gravesend and James of Spain, 'Antonius [de, Cat. II] Bek'. Presum. transf. to this preb. from preb. of Pancratius, after 1280. Bp. of Durham, el. July 1283, cons. Jan. 1284.

M. James of Spain (fn. 6)

Occ. in cats. between Antony Bek and John de Offord, 'Jacobus de Hispania [Hyspania, Cat. II]'. Said to have received preb. before Apr. 1287 (Registrum Clementis V, ed. O.S.B. (Rome, 1885-92) no. 775), (fn. 7) but described as a minor and depr. by abp. of a benefice in Bath dioc. 13 May 1283 (Reg. Epp. Peckham 11 549). Occ. as can. c. 29 Feb. 1292 (C.C.R. 1288-96 p. 260). Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 8) Charged, as this preb., with pluralism, 9 Apr. 1303 (Reg. Winchelsey 1 453-4). Retained preb. until 16 March 1330, when exchanged with John de Offord for preb. in Lincoln (reg. H. Burghersh: Lincoln, Lincs. Archives Office, Reg. IV fo. 403r).
