CHANCELLORS

The title 'chancellor' was not in regular use at St. Paul's until after 1200, before which date magister scholarum was the usual term. (fn. 1)

M. Durand Preb. Twiford

Called scholasticus c. 1102 (Acta SS., Oct., III 754), and was predecessor of M. Hugh in a dwelling-house (see below); therefore prob. mag. schol. Occ. as can. from 1086 to 1111/12. D. before Jan. 1127 (Gibbs no. 273).

M. Hugh Preb. unident.

Appd. as mag. schol. [1111 × Jan. 1127] (Gibbs no. 273), being granted the dwelling formerly M. Durand's, and the custody of books. Apparently d. or res. before Jan. 1127 (Gibbs no. 274). Possibly to be identified with Hugh, archdcn. of Middlesex, from c. 1128 to 1138, and ?preb. of Hoxton (cf. above p. 15).

Henry (fn. 2) Preb. unident.

Appd. as mag. schol. before 16 Jan. 1127 (Gibbs no. 274). Occ. as mag. schol. [c. 1134 × 1141] (Gibbs no. 275), (fn. 3) and 1150/1 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 85r, from missing Liber F fo. 35). Presum. to be identified with M. Henry I, can., unident. preb. (see below, pp. 92-3). Possibly also to be identified with Henry son of Hugh the archdcn. [of Middlesex], preb. of Hoxton (cf. below p. 55). Thought by Stubbs to be identified with M. Henry of London, who renounced claim to archdcnry. of Colchester, c. 1154 (Diceto 1 p. xxxvi; cf. above p. 18), and occ. without title, as father of another Henry, [March 1157 × May 1162] (see below p. 92).

(fn. 5) Occ. as Henry, mag. schol., [1162 × 74] (A/71/1797, cal. in Rep. p. 50b), (fn. 6) [c. 1170 × c. 1180] (A/20/192, cal. incompletely in Rep. p. 21b; cf. A/4/224, A/12/1113, A/23/21, A/24/ 1302, cal. in Rep. pp. 5b-6a, 13b, 24b, 25b-26a). (fn. 7) Presum. to be identified with M. Henry II, can., unident. preb. (see below p. 92). Possibly to be identified with Henry, son of M. Henry of London, who occ. without title, [March 1157 × May 1162] (A/28/273, cal. in Rep. pp. 31b-32a). (fn. 8)

M. Ralph de Alta Ripa (fn. 9) Preb. Caddington Major

Occ. as mag. schol. 11 June 1180 (G.F.L. no. 374), and in five other documents of [c. 1179 × 1180] (G.F.L. nos. 360, 401, 411, 445, 461), and as chanc. once, also [c. 1179 × 1180] (G.F.L. no. 457). Archdcn. of Colchester, before Sept. 1186. Nephew of Gilbert Foliot I, bp. of London (1163-87) (see G.F. p. 44 n. 4).

M. Richard de Stortford (fn. 10) Preb. Harleston

First dated occs. as mag. schol. 1183/4 (G.F.L. no. 403), and c. Sept. 1183 (B.M., Cotton MS. Claud. A. viii fo. 119v, from lost cart. of Bermondsey), but another occ. may be earlier, [c. 1181] (G.F.L. no. 388). Occ. as mag. schol. c. 1192 (D.S.R. I). Last occ. after Oct. 1200 (A/12/289, cal. in Rep. p. 14a), (fn. 11) and [Jan. 1198 × Dec. 1202] (Curia Regis Rolls 11 267). Commem. 20 June (Obits. I fo. 12v, II fo. 108r, III fo. 95v, IV pp. 67, 85). So presum. d. in June of 1201, 1202 or 1203.

M. John of Kent Preb. Finsbury

First occ. as chanc. [March 1204] (Gibbs no. 58), perhaps earlier (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 48r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'B'). (fn. 12) Last occ. after July 1213 (C. R. Cheney, in Beds. Hist. Record Soc. Publ. xxxii (1952) 24-5), and [1214] (Acta Stephani Langton, ed. K. Major (Canterbury and York Soc. l) no. 9).

M. Gervase of Howbridge (fn. 13) Prebs. unident., Hoxton

First occ. [Dec. 1213 × Apr. 1214] (charter roll of Holy Trinity, Aldgate: B.M., Cotton Roll xiii. 18 no. 10), (fn. 14) and according to Newcourt, occ. 13 July 1214 (Newcourt 1 111 n. f, citing 'Bag. Dioc. Lond. in Surio'). Excomm. late summer 1215 (Innocent III, Selected Letters no. 85; cf. Richardson, Guala p. 253 n. 2). El. dean after Sept. 1216, but el. treated as void by legate Guala, who depr. Gervase of office of chanc. on or before 28 Oct. 1217 (Richardson, Guala p. 259 no. 2).

M. Henry de Cornhill Prebs. Weldland, Finsbury, ?unident.

Appd. 28 Oct. 1217 by legate Guala (Richardson, Guala p. 259 no. 2). Last occ. June 1242 (Moore, St. Barts. 1 382 n. 1). Dean, by May 1243.
