Always called archdcn., but never with territ. title. First occ. 3 June 1102 (Gibbs no. 178), and c. 1102 (Acta SS., Oct., III 754). Last occ. 18 Apr. 1106 (Gibbs no. 198). Presum. archdcn. of Middlesex, because: (1) was only archdcn. present with Maurice, bp. of London, at dedication of a chapel in archdcnry. of Middlesex, 3 Nov. 1104 (cart. of Little Dunmow: B.M., Harley MS. 662 fo. 6r), (fn. 1) and (2) Roger, his son, prob. succeeded him (see below).]

Roger son of Robert Preb. Caddington Major

First certain occ., called Roger the archdcn., c. 1108 (Gibbs no. 63). (fn. 2) D., called Roger archdcn. of Middlesex, before 16 Jan. 1127 (Diceto I 251). Presum. to be identified with Roger the archdcn., preb. of Caddington Major, son of Robert the archdcn.

Richard de Belmeis II (of Beaumais) (fn. 3) Preb. Caddington Major

Hugh ?Preb. Hoxton

Richard de Belmeis appd. and instal. [1121 × Jan. 1127], when still a minor, and custody of archdcnry. given to Hugh, (possibly M. Hugh, mag. schol., cf. below p. 25), 'paucis diebus elapsis' (Diceto 1 251). (fn. 4) Some time between Jan. 1128 and Aug. 1134 Richard made an unsuccessful claim to archdcnry., but Hugh's right was upheld by Gilbert the Universal, bp. of London (1128-34) (ibid.). Hugh occ. as archdcn. temp. bp. Gilbert (charter roll of Holy Trinity, Aldgate: B.M., Cotton Roll xiii. 18 no. 12) and before c. 1138 (WD 4 fo. 52/56v, pd. in Rep. p. 67a-b). (fn. 5) After Aug. 1134 Richard appealed to the pope, and in 1138 Hugh was depr. and Richard restored (Diceto 1 251-2). Richard occ. as archdcn. [June × July 1141] (Regesta III no. 377), and also before Apr. 1142 (A/71/1801, cal. in Rep. p. 50b; WD 4 fos. 28/32r, 54/58v, 55/59v-56/ 60r, pd. in Rep. pp. 63b, 68a (bis)), (fn. 6) and perhaps earlier, [1139 × 41] (L. Voss, Heinrich von Blois, Bischof von Winchester (Berlin, 1932) pp. 146-7), and c. 1140 (Hale p. 125). Richard became bp. of London, Sept. 1152. Richard called archdcn. of London by Gilbert Foliot (G.F.L. no. 99), but presum. means of London dioc. Brother of Richard Ruffus I, archdcn. of Essex (WD 4 fo. 27/31r, pd. in Rep. p. 63a), son of Robert de Belmeis and nephew of Richard de Belmeis I, bp. of London (1108-27) (Diceto 1 251).

Pope Eugenius III's candidate for archdcnry. [Sept. 1152 × c. June 1153], but Ralph de Diceto appd. by bp. Richard de Belmeis II before the pope's wishes known (see below). Became treas. of York, c. 1154.]

Called archdcn. of London by Arnulf of Lisieux (Letters of Arnulf of Lisieux, ed. F. Barlow (Camden 3rd ser. lxi) no. 26), but presum. means of London dioc. (cf. Stubbs, Diceto 1 pp. xxxv-vi). Called archdcn. of Middlesex [Oct. 1166 × c. 1176] ('The book of the foundation of Walden abbey', ed. in trans. H. Collar, Essex Review xlv (1936) 228; (fn. 10) cf. Matthew Hutton's proof that Diceto's archdcnry. was Middlesex, Newcourt 1 34).

[?Richard Foliot I (fn. 11) Preb[s. ?Consumpta,] Wenlocksbarn

Occ. as archdcn. of Middlesex only in prebendal cats. for Wenlocksbarn and in Obit. II. (fn. 12) Previously archdcn. of Colchester, where last certain occ. 2 Dec. 1178. Perhaps transf. to Middlesex on Diceto's elevation to deanery. Commem. 26 Jan. (Obit. II fo. 107r), 28 Jan. (Obit. III fo. 94v), 27 Jan. (Obit. IV pp. 62, 75). (fn. 13) ]

Gilbert Foliot II (fn. 14) Preb. Newington

Not appd. until after 11 June 1180, when still called can. (G.F.L. no. 374). First occ. [c. 1181 × 1183] (G.F.L. no. 365). Occ. c. 1192 (D.S.R. II). Last occ. [21 Apr. × 30 Dec. 1196] (Gibbs no. 186). (fn. 15) Called only Gilbert archdcn. of Middlesex in most occs. in office, but appears with full name and title in charter issued by himself (cart. of Walden: B.M., Harley MS. 3697 fo. 49r).

Ralph of Ely (fn. 16) Preb. Chiswick

First occ. shortly after March 1198 (Ely, D. & C., Chs. 61, 62). Last occ. after Sept. 1203 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 48r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'B'). (fn. 17) Prob. a relative of Richard of Ely, archdcn. of Colchester (Ely, D. & C., Ch. 473; cf. Ely, Diocesan Records, Liber M (Cambridge, Univ. Libr., G. 3. 28) pp. 160-2 (iterata)).

William [de Sancte Marie Ecclesia II] Preb. Wilsden

First occ. 1217/18 (A/29/331), and 1 Feb. 1218 (A/39/1385). Last occ. after Apr. 1227 (WD 1 fo. 37b). (fn. 18) Prob. to be identified with William de Sancte Marie Ecclesia, archdcn. of Middlesex, who occ. [July 1227 × July 1228] (Norwich, D. & C., Ch. 38). (fn. 19)

Reginald de Radenor, who occ. as bp. of London's official 1225/6 (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 152v), and without title 20 Jan. 1227 (Regesta Honorii III, ed. P. Pressutti (Rome, 1888-95) no. 6192), and 4 May 1227 (cart. of Stoke by Clare: B.M., Cotton MS. App. xxi fo. 54v).

M. John de Norton Preb. Wilsden

Previously precentor. Not appd. until after 12 Apr. 1240, when still precentor. No longer precentor, and therefore perhaps archdcn., before May 1241. First occ. as archdcn. 18 May 1242 (Ann. Tewkesbury, Ann. Mon. 1 123). Last certain occ. 7 Nov. 1243 (A/30/465), but may occ. later, after March 1243 (A/33/745). (fn. 22) D. as archdcn. by Apr. 1244 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 34v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's 'in thecis').

M. Fulk de Sanford Preb. Ealdland

Coll. by bp. Apr. 1244 in succession to John de Norton (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 34v, as above). No other occ. as archdcn. of Middlesex. Became treas. after Oct. 1246.

Richard Foliot II Preb. Chamberlainwood

Not appd. until after 1244/5, when still called can. (A/1/540, cal. in Rep. p. 1b). (fn. 23) First occ. as archdcn. 1 Aug. 1248 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 126r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'K'). Last certain occs. 24 May 1259 (C.P.R. 1258-66 p. 23), and 1259/60 (A/33/730). Certainly d. before 23 or 24 March 1266 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 157r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'H'), but prob. a good deal earlier. Relative of Geoffrey de Lucy, dean (Gibbs no. 300).

M. Henry de Wengham II Preb. Newington

Not appd. until after 28 Aug. 1259 (Reg. Alex. IV no. 2936). First occ. 21 Aug. 1262 (Statutes p. 385), but prob. appd. before July 1262 by his uncle, bp. Henry de Wengham I. Last occ. 20 Jan. 1267 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 28). D. as archdcn. before 25 March 1268 (A/42/45). Nephew of Henry de Wengham I, bp. of London (1260-62) (Reg. Alex. IV no. 2936).

M. Thomas of Ingoldisthorpe (fn. 24) Preb. Newington

Presum. not appd. until after 3 Aug. 1267, when still archdcn. of Sudbury (Norwich dioc.) (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 96).
