Appendices

The appendices are designed to arrange a number of important twelfth-century documents into a chronological series. The documents selected are those which have been cited frequently in the text, or are important in establishing dates. Very few of the documents bear dates, and apart from two lists of canons in the Lincoln Psalter (L.P. I and II) and two lists of dignitaries from Henry of Huntingdon's letter De Contemptu Mundi (D.C.M. I and II), all the documents are charters with witness-clauses.

The chronological arrangement of the documents has been achieved by the use of a punched card system, (fn. 1) where the names of members of the Lincoln clergy (not necessarily canons) form the basis of the code employed. So 'witnesses' in the appendices does not necessarily mean all the witnesses of a charter, but those mentioned who were members of the Lincoln clergy.

The information given in each appendix has been reduced to a minimum for the purpose of dating. The outside limits of date are given, and these are followed, where possible, by a close, conjectural date. After the references to the documents concerned, there follow brief notes on the termini post and ante quem, introduced by after and before. Where other documents are thought to have a close chronological correspondence, further references and notes are given. Particular attention has been paid to establishing the sequence of the documents in the series.

II no. 553: (i) Robert archdcn. of Northampton here (no. 4) had been succeeded by William in R.A.L. II no. 553; William is prob. can. here (no. 24); (ii) Humphrey can. here (no. 33) occ. as subdean in R.A.L. II no. 553; (iii) Osbert son of Hugh, can. here (no. 26), is prob. Osbert archdcn. TEXT As the printed version of the list has some inaccuracies, the names of the canons are given below. In the MS. additional names and titles are written in a contemporary (? the same) hand above some of the names; these suprascript additions are indicated below in angle-brackets. Capital letters are as in the MS., and abbreviations are not extended. The numerals at the left are supplied for ease of reference, and are the same as those given in L.S. II(2) 789-92. Information on the right gives the form of names preferred in the present volume, with page-references.

Appendix 3 1130 × 35, ? c. 1133

CHARTER R.A.L. II no. 553 (fn. 5)

DATE after (1) William son of Hacon, the brother of Odo the can., became sheriff of Lincs., so after Sept. 1130 (see Regesta II nos. 1640 and note, and 1784)

(2) William succeeded to archdcnry. of Northampton, where his predecessor Robert last occ. Sept. 1130 (above p. 30)

(3) L.P. I, of ? c. 1132 (app. 2), where 11 of the 16 witnesses of this charter occ., but not much later

before (1) dean Philip of Harcourt left Lincoln, so presum. before June 1139 (above p. 8)

(2) D.C.M. I, of c. 1134 (app. 4), where of 8 archdcnries. only one had changed hands, so not much earlier (see more fully in app. 4)

Appendix 4 1133 × 35, c. 1134

D.C.M. I, the first version of Henry of Huntingdon's letter De Contemptu Mundi, with a list of dignitaries; pd. Hen. Hunt. pp. 297-320 (see also above p. xiv) (fn. 6)

DATE after (1) the nom. of Geoffrey Rufus, bp. of Durham, after 14 May 1133 (cons. prob. 6 Aug. 1133) (Fasti 1066-1300 II 30)

(2) the nom. of Nigel, bp. of Ely, on 28 May 1133 (cons. 1 Oct. 1133) (ibid. p. 45)

before (1) the d. of king Henry I, on 1 Dec. 1135

(2) the d. of Godfrey, bp. of Bath, on 16 Aug. 1135

The date c. 1134 is strongly suggested by two references to Gilbert the Universal, bp. of London: one, p. 316, as still alive, the other, p. 308, as recently dead. Gilbert d. early in Aug. 1134 (Fasti 1066-1300 I 1, citing B. Smalley, in Recherches de Théologie Ancienne et Médiévale vii (1935) 240 n. 29).

The evidence of the Lincoln dignitaries is not sufficiently precise to give positive confirmation of the above dating of D.C.M. I, but there is nothing to cast doubt on a date of c. 1134. D.C.M. I is clearly very close in date to both L.P. I (app. 2) and R.A.L. II no. 553 (app. 3). Of the 10 dignitaries mentioned in D.C.M. I as being in office at the time of its composition, 7 are found in L.P. I and 7 in R.A.L. II no. 553; the three documents have 6 dignitaries in common. The differences between the three documents give the correct sequence:

a) R.A.L. II no. 553 and D.C.M. I are both later than L.P. I, as shown by the appearance of Robert archdcn. of Northampton in L.P. I (app. 2 no. 4), who had been succeeded by William by the time of R.A.L. II no. 553 (app. 3) and D.C.M. I b) D.C.M. I is later than R.A.L. II no. 553: (i) Osbert son of Hugh, archdcn. of Stow, who occ. in R.A.L. II no. 553, had been succeeded as archdcn. by his son William by the time of D.C.M. I (fn. 7) (ii) William treas., who occ. in R.A.L. II no. 553, had been succeeded by Geoffrey by the time of D.C.M. I (fn. 8)

TEXT The following, from Hen. Hunt. pp. 301-3, are the dignitaries named as being in office at the time of D.C.M. I, in the order given:

dean not named
treas. Geoffrey (above p. 18) (fn. 9)
[archdcn. of Stow] William [son of Osbert] (p. 44) (fn. 10)
precentor Ranulph (p. 12)
archdcn. of Lincoln William of Bayeux (p. 24)
archdcn. of Huntingdon Henry (p. 27)
archdcn. of Northampton William (p. 30)
archdcn. of Leicester Walter (p. 32)
archdcn. of Oxford Walter (p. 35)
archdcn. of Buckingham Richard [de Urville] (p. 39)
archdcn. of Bedford Hugh (p. 41)

Appendix 5 1141 × 45

CHARTER cart. Bardney fos. 59v-60r

DATE after Adelelm dean, who occ. here, had succeeded Philip of Harcourt, who last occ. as dean 1141/2 and became bp. of Bayeux before 18 June 1142 (see above p. 8) (fn. 11)

before Gibbs, St. Paul's no. 156, of 1145/6 (app. 6), as Hugh archdcn. of Bedford, who occ. here, had been succeeded by Nicholas in St. Paul's no. 156

Appendix 6 1145/6

CHARTER Gibbs, St. Paul's no. 156

DATE charter is dated 1145, so latest date is 24 March 1146

D.C.M. II, the second version of Henry of Huntingdon's letter De Contemptu Mundi, with a list of dignitaries; pd. Hen. Hunt. pp. 297-320 (see also above p. xiv) (fn. 12)

DATE after William de Turba became bp. of Norwich, el. 1146, cons. 1146 or perhaps early 1147 (Fasti 1066-1300 II 56)

before (1) R.A.L. I no. 302 (app. 9), so before 25 Feb. 1148, as (i) Ranulph precentor in D.C.M. II was succeeded by Roger de Almaria, whose appt. is announced in R.A.L. I no. 302; (ii) Hamo chanc., who is not mentioned in D.C.M. II, was prob. in office by the time of R.A.L. I no. 302 (above p. 16)

Appendix 10 1149 × 51, c. 1150

CHARTERS Cart. Missenden I no. 76; Danelaw Chs. no. 283

DATE after the cons. of bp. Robert de Chesney, 19 Dec. 1148, and presum. not earlier than the beginning of 1149 (above p. 2)

before B.L., Harley Chs. 84. C. 47 and 48, of 1 Oct. 1151 (app. 12), as Robert Foliot, here can., is archdcn. of Oxford in the Harley Chs.

CHARTER Reg. Godstow I no. 466

DATE after the cons. of bp. Robert de Chesney (as above)

before Reg. Godstow I no. 467 (app. 14), so some time before 28 Sept. 1152

This charter is very close in date to Danelaw Chs. no. 283, as 6 of the 11 witnesses of Danelaw Chs. no. 283 occ. here, including: (i) Jordan treas., who does not occ. later, and had been succeeded before Sept. 1156, perhaps by c. 1152 (above p. 19) (ii) M. Hamo, who although prob. already in the office of chanc. (above p. 16), occ. without that title, as in R.A.L. I no. 302, prob. of second half of 1147 (app. 9); in Reg. Godstow I no. 466 he occ. as M. Hamo, and in Danelaw Chs. no. 283 he occ. as 'doctor Hamo'; he is first called chanc. in Danelaw Chs. no. 383, and R.A.L. II no. 331 and X no. 2681, of early 1150s (app. 11) (iii) Geoffrey chapl., who does not otherwise occ. (fn. 13)

NOTE Both Danelaw Chs. no. 283 and Reg. Godstow I no. 466 are close in date to R.A.L. III no. 921, of c. 23 May 1147 (app. 8): 9 of 11 witnesses of Danelaw Chs. no. 283 occ. in R.A.L. III no. 921; 13 of 23 witnesses of Reg. Godstow I no. 466 occ. in R.A.L. III no. 921

Appendix 11 1149 × 60, early 1150s

CHARTERS cart. Kirkstead fo. 99r; R.A.L. II no. 331, X no. 2681

DATE after the cons. of bp. Robert de Chesney, 19 Dec. 1148, and presum. not earlier than the beginning of 1149 (above p. 2)

before Humphrey ceased to be subdean, prob. Nov. 1160 (p. 21)

CHARTERS Danelaw Chs. no. 383; R.A.L. II no. 495

DATE no firm early limit, but similarity of witness-lists suggests same period as others, and later limit as above

These 5 charters are very close in date: cart. Kirkstead fo. 99r, R.A.L. II no. 495 and X no. 2681 all have 4 witnesses in common; 5 of 6 witnesses of cart. Kirkstead fo. 99r occ. in R.A.L. II no. 495; 5 of 8 witnesses of R.A.L. II no. 331 occ. in X no. 2681; 6 of 9 witnesses of X no. 2681 occ. in II no. 495; 5 of 9 witnesses of X no. 2681 occ. in Danelaw Chs. no. 383.

The witness-pattern of the group is marginally closer to the patterns of c. 23 May 1147 (app. 8) and c. 1150 (app. 10), than to the mid 1150s (app. 15); therefore the group is assigned to the early 1150s, and as there is no close correspondence with the witness-patterns of 1151-2 (app. 12, 13, 14), the group may be even earlier. (fn. 14)

Appendix 12 1 Oct. 1151

DATE after Robert Foliot became archdcn. of Oxford, so after early 1151 (above p. 35); R.A.L. II no. 310 is attested by Geoffrey, king's chapl. (i.e. of king Henry II), so presum. after 19 Dec. 1154 (cf. above p. 86); R.A.L. II no. 322 concerns privileges of St. Albans abbey, so perhaps after papal bulls of Feb. 1156 (P.U.E. III nos. 100, 102-3)

These 3 charters are very close in date: 7 of 10 witnesses of R.A.L. II no. 322 occ. in no. 346; 3 of 7 witnesses of no. 310 occ. in no. 346, including Nicholas de Hamtoma, who does not otherwise occ. NOTE cart. Alvingham fo. 60r should prob. be placed early in the period, ? early 1150s: of 8 witnesses, 7 occ. in R.A.L. III no. 921, of c. 23 May 1147 (app. 8), 5 occ. in Reg. Godstow I no. 466, and 4 occ. in Danelaw Chs. no. 283, of c. 1150 (app. 10)

before (1) Roger de Almaria ceased to be precentor, so some time before 19 Apr. 1161 (above p. 12)

(2) cart. St. Andrew, Northampton, fos. 26v-27r (app. 24): (i) Roger de Almaria had been succeeded by M. Richard de Almaria as archdcn. of Stow by the time of the Northampton charter; (ii) Baldric de Sigillo, can. here, had become archdcn. of Leicester by the time of the Northampton charter

The charter is close in date to R.A.L. II no. 613, of Nov. 1160 × Apr. 1161 (app. 18), where 4 of its 8 witnesses occ., and it is therefore assigned to the late 1150s

Appendix 18 Nov. 1160 × Apr. 1161

CHARTER R.A.L. II no. 613

DATE after M. Ralph of Caen became subdean, so after Nov. 1160, perhaps after 20 Jan. 1160 (above p. 21)

CHARTERS Genealogist n.s. xv p. 227; R.A.L. II no. 339 (these charters may be taken together, as all 5 witnesses of the latter occ. in the former)

DATE after the cons. of bp. Robert de Chesney, 19 Dec. 1148, and presum. not earlier than the beginning of 1149 (above p. 2)

before Baldric de Sigillo, can. here (Genealogist n.s. xv p. 227), became archdcn. of Leicester, so some time before March 1163 (above p. 33)

CHARTERS cart. Thorney II fo. 245v, 2 of whose 3 witnesses, M. Robert de Burnham and Baldric de Sigillo, occ. in Genealogist n.s. xv p. 227; before the d. of Henry archdcn. of Huntingdon, who last occ. 1156 × 57, perhaps autumn 1157 (above p. 27)

Danelaw Chs. no. 2, of whose 6 witnesses, 3 occ. both in Genealogist n.s. xv p. 227 and in R.A.L. II no. 339

This group of 4 charters is prob. close in date to Danelaw Chs. no. 284, of late 1150s (app. 17): 2 witnesses, M. Robert de Burnham and M. Malger [of Newark], found in Danelaw Chs. no. 284, are common to Genealogist n.s. xv p. 227, R.A.L. II no. 339, and Danelaw Chs. no. 2; 2 of 3 witnesses of cart. Thorney II fo. 245v, M. Robert de Burnham and Baldric de Sigillo, occ. also in Danelaw Chs. no. 284.

Like Danelaw Chs. no. 284, this group belongs before cart. St. Andrew, Northampton, fos. 26v-27r: (i) Baldric de Sigillo, can. here (Genealogist n.s. xv p. 227, and cart. Thorney II fo. 245v), had become archdcn. of Leicester by the time of the Northampton charter; (ii) Henry archdcn. of Huntingdon here (cart. Thorney II fo. 245v), had possibly been succeeded by Hugh by the time of the Northampton charter (but see above p. 27)

CHARTERS R.A.L. III no. 907, V no. 1514

DATE after M. Ralph of Caen became subdean, so after Nov. 1160 (above p. 21)

prob. before the d. of bp. Robert de Chesney, so before c. 25 Dec. 1166 (p. 2)

Prob. also belonging to this period:

CHARTER R.A.L. IV no. 1247, of whose 8 witnesses, 4 occ. in V no. 1514

This group of 3 charters is very close to charters of 1163: the following number of witnesses from the 7 witnesses of R.A.L. IV no. 1292, of March 1162/3 (app. 20), occ. in this group: 4 in R.A.L. III no. 907, 3 in V no. 1514, 3 in IV no. 1247; and the following number of witnesses occ. in R.A.L. IX no. 2474, of 30 May 1163 (app. 21): 5 of 8 witnesses of R.A.L. III no. 907, 5 of 8 of V no. 1514, 5 of 8 of IV no. 1247

Perhaps also belonging to this period:

CHARTER R.A.L. IX no. 2500, of whose 8 witnesses, 4 occ. in III no. 907

Appendix 23 Nov. 1160 × c. 1170, ? c. 1163

CHARTER R.A.L. IX no. 2608

DATE This charter is assigned to c. 1180 by its editor, on the following grounds:

after Martin ceased to be treas., who last occ. 1179/80 (above p. 19), as this charter is attested by Adam treas.

before M. Hamo ceased to be chanc., prob. d. 17 Aug. 1182 (p. 16), and before M. Ralph of Caen ceased to be subdean, some time before Dec. 1184 (p. 21)

But there are two difficulties with the earlier limit: a) the witness-pattern is much more like that of charters of the 1160s than later; none of the witnesses occ. in L.P. II, of c. 1187 (app. 33), or in Danelaw Chs. no. 291, of ? late 1183 or early 1184 (app. 31); but 7 of the 10 witnesses occ. in R.A.L. IX no. 2474, of 30 May 1163 (app. 21), and 4 in IV no. 1292, of March 1162/3 (app. 20); 4 of the 10 witnesses do not occ. after the 1160s: Philip son of William the archdcn., last certain occ. 30 May 1163 (above p. 103), Robert son of William the constable, last certain occ. 30 May 1163 (p. 58), Wiger, last occ. 1170 (p. 147), William son of Gunter, last occ. 1170 (p. 148)

b) Adam, who occ. here as treas. for the only time, is presum. Adam de Amundeville, son of Jordan treas.; he occ. as can. both before and after c. 1180 (above p. 118); as can. he occ. in R.A.L. IX no. 2603 (app. 31), which is certainly later than this charter, as M. William subdean in no. 2603 had succeeded M. Ralph of Caen who occ. as subdean in this charter

A revised date is suggested:

after M. Ralph of Caen became subdean, so after Nov. 1160 (above p. 21)

before Philip son of William the archdcn., Robert son of William the constable, Wiger, and William son of Gunter cease to occ. as witnesses, so prob. before c. 1170

If the charter belongs to the 1160s, the period of Martin's treasurership, there are two possible explanations of Adam's appearance as treas.: either he was acting as treas. in the absence of Martin, or on this occasion his name was given as Adam treas., in the same way that Robert son of William the constable sometimes occ., as he does in this very charter, as Robert constable (see above p. 58)

If the second possibility be allowed, this charter has 8 of its 10 witnesses, including Adam and Robert son of the constable, in R.A.L. IX no. 2474, of 30 May 1163 (app. 21), and it may therefore belong to c. 1163.

before Cart. Eynsham I no. 10 and R.A.L. I no. 287 (app. 25), so some time before Dec. 1166, prob. before c. 1165: (i) Hugh (? = Henry) archdcn. of Huntingdon here (cf. above p. 27), had been succeeded by Nicholas de Sigillo by the time of Cart. Eynsham I no. 10; (ii) William Clement, can. here, had become prior of Elsham by the time of R.A.L. I no. 287 (fn. 15)

(2) the d. of M. Malger [of Newark] (occ. in Cart. Eynsham I no. 10 and R.A.L. I no. 287), which perhaps occurred before c. 1165 (above p. 131)

L.P. II, a list of canons, in Lincoln, D. & C. Libr., MS. 1 (Great Bible) fo. 207r; pd. L.S. II(2) 793

DATE after (1) M. Richard de Almaria ceased to be precentor, who last occ. after 21 Sept. 1186 (above pp. 12-13), as precentorship apparently vacant at time of L.P. II

(2) William Trussebut ceased to be can., who last occ. Sept. 1186 (p. 94), but does not occ. in L.P. II

(3) M. Alexander became archdcn. of Stow (no. 9), so prob. after 29 March 1187 (p. 45)

before (1) Godfrey de Lucy, can. here (no. 25), became bp. of Winchester, el. 15 Sept., cons. 22 Oct. 1189 (Fasti 1066-1300 II 85)

(2) Westminster 'Domesday' fo. 242r, of ? c. 1188 (app. 34), as M. Robert of Bedford does not occ. as can. here (cf. above p. 116)

(3) M. Robert of Bedford became precentor, who first occ. 18 Oct. 1188 (above p. 13), as precentorship apparently vacant at time of L.P. II

(4) Philip Apostolorum became can., who evidently first occ. 20 Sept. 1187 (above p. 134), unless he is to be identified with Philip of Coutances (no. 45)

NOTE There are three empty lines in the list (nos. 11, 53, 55). They are perhaps to be explained thus:

(1) Peter, who was certainly archdcn. of Lincoln at this time (above p. 25), does not occ. in the list, so one of the empty lines should prob. be assigned to him, and does not therefore represent a vacant stall in the chapter.

(2) No precentor occ., M. Richard de Almaria presum. having d., and M. Robert of Bedford not yet having succeeded (p. 13). M. Robert of Bedford succeeded to the preb. previously held by Roger of Derby, who d. between early 1183 and Sept. 1187, and who was presum. d. by the time of the list, as he does not occ. here (cf. p. 142).

(3) No archdcn. of Leicester occ., Baldric de Sigillo presum. having d., and Hamo, who occ. here as can. (no. 22), prob. not yet having succeeded (p. 33).

TEXT As the printed version of the list has some inaccuracies, the names of the canons are given below. The list in the MS. is drawn up in two columns (nos. 1-28 and 29-56), with three empty lines (nos. 11, 53, 55). The numerals at the left are supplied for ease of reference, and are the same as those given in L.S. II(2) 793. Information on the right gives the form of names preferred in the present volume, with page-references.

Footnotes

  • 1. I hope to describe the method in a forthcoming article, in Bull. Inst. Hist. Res. 1 (1977).
  • 2. The date of L.P. I was thought by Bradshaw to be some time between 1154 and 1184 (L.S. I 79), and by Wordsworth to be c. 1145 (ibid. II(2) 797-9). In a brief but valuable note, Miss Major has suggested that L.P. I should be dated before 1135 (R.A.L. IX 257 n. 7).
  • 3. Four or five letters erased.
  • 4. About five letters erased.
  • 5. Dated by Foster 'before 1143; prob. c. 1135'; Miss Major puts before Sept. 1142 (R.A.L. IX 256 n. 6).
  • 6. Arnold's date is 1135.
  • 7. Although Henry of Huntingdon does not give the title of archdcn. of Stow to the series of dignitaries-Hugh, Osbert, William-it is reasonably certain that they are archdcns., see above pp. 44, 16 n.
  • 8. Henry of Huntingdon omits William from his series of treasurers, but he undoubtedly existed, and must have preceded Geoffrey, see above p. 18.
  • 9. See note 2 above.
  • 10. See note 1 above.
  • 11. If William archdcn. who occ. about the time of the foundation of Revesby abbey was William of Bayeux, archdcn. of Lincoln, the present charter must belong after c. 9 Aug. 1143, as Robert his successor occ. here (cf. above p. 25).
  • 12. Arnold's date is 1145.
  • 13. He is presum. not to be identified with Geoffrey Dominicus, chapl. of king Henry II, who first occ. mid 1150s (above p. 86).
  • 14. If this dating for R.A.L. II no. 495 is correct, 'Fredus subdecanus et cantor' cannot mean that Humphrey was precentor as well as subdean, but that Roger de Almaria's name as cantor was omitted (cf. above p. 12); on grounds of general probability this interpretation is more likely than that suggested in R.A.L. X pp. xli-ii.
  • 15. William Clement occ. without the title of prior in Cart. Osen. VI no. 1068, together with 'Will[iam]' dean [of Lincoln]. If there was only one William Clement, who was can. of Lincoln and then prior of Elsham (cf. Heads of Relig. Houses p. 163, and above p. 148), and if the dating of R.A.L. I no. 287 together with Cart. Eynsham I no. 10 is correct (app. 25), 'Will[iam]' dean in Cart. Osen. VI no. 1068 may be a scribal error for 'Adel[elm]', as dean Adelelm confirmed Cart. Eynsham I no. 10 in ibid. no. 9 (cf. above p. 8). The reading of the MS. of the Oseney cart. (B.L., Cotton MS. Vitell. E. xv fo. 127r) is certainly 'Will': it may be that by the early 13th cent., when the cart. was compiled, 'Adel' in a charter would have been sufficiently unusual for a copyist to prefer 'Will'.
  • 16. Corrected with MS. at Aylesbury, Bucks. R.O.: for John treas., read Jocelin treas. (above p. 19).
