Appendices

The appendices are designed to arrange a number of important twelfth-century documents into a chronological series. The documents selected are those which have been cited frequently in the text, or are important in establishing dates. Very few of the documents bear dates, and apart from two lists of canons in the Lincoln Psalter (L.P. I and II) and two lists of dignitaries from Henry of Huntingdon's letter De Contemptu Mundi (D.C.M. I and II), all the documents are charters with witness-clauses.

The chronological arrangement of the documents has been achieved by the use of a punched card system, (fn. 1) where the names of members of the Lincoln clergy (not necessarily canons) form the basis of the code employed. So 'witnesses' in the appendices does not necessarily mean all the witnesses of a charter, but those mentioned who were members of the Lincoln clergy.

The information given in each appendix has been reduced to a minimum for the purpose of dating. The outside limits of date are given, and these are followed, where possible, by a close, conjectural date. After the references to the documents concerned, there follow brief notes on the termini post and ante quem, introduced by after and before. Where other documents are thought to have a close chronological correspondence, further references and notes are given. Particular attention has been paid to establishing the sequence of the documents in the series.

In the MS. additional names and titles are written in a contemporary (? the same) hand above some of the names; these suprascript additions are indicated below in angle-brackets. Capital letters are as in the MS., and abbreviations are not extended. The numerals at the left are supplied for ease of reference, and are the same as those given in L.S. II(2) 789-92. Information on the right gives the form of names preferred in the present volume, with page-references.

The date c. 1134 is strongly suggested by two references to Gilbert the Universal, bp. of London: one, p. 316, as still alive, the other, p. 308, as recently dead. Gilbert d. early in Aug. 1134 (Fasti 1066-1300 I 1, citing B. Smalley, in Recherches de Théologie Ancienne et Médiévale vii (1935) 240 n. 29).

The evidence of the Lincoln dignitaries is not sufficiently precise to give positive confirmation of the above dating of D.C.M. I, but there is nothing to cast doubt on a date of c. 1134. D.C.M. I is clearly very close in date to both L.P. I (app. 2) and R.A.L. II no. 553 (app. 3). Of the 10 dignitaries mentioned in D.C.M. I as being in office at the time of its composition, 7 are found in L.P. I and 7 in R.A.L. II no. 553; the three documents have 6 dignitaries in common. The differences between the three documents give the correct sequence:

a) R.A.L. II no. 553 and D.C.M. I are both later than L.P. I, as shown by the appearance of Robert archdcn. of Northampton in L.P. I (app. 2 no. 4), who had been succeeded by William by the time of R.A.L. II no. 553 (app. 3) and D.C.M. I b) D.C.M. I is later than R.A.L. II no. 553: (i) Osbert son of Hugh, archdcn. of Stow, who occ. in R.A.L. II no. 553, had been succeeded as archdcn. by his son William by the time of D.C.M. I (fn. 7) (ii) William treas., who occ. in R.A.L. II no. 553, had been succeeded by Geoffrey by the time of D.C.M. I (fn. 8)

But there are two difficulties with the earlier limit: a) the witness-pattern is much more like that of charters of the 1160s than later; none of the witnesses occ. in L.P. II, of c. 1187 (app. 33), or in Danelaw Chs. no. 291, of ? late 1183 or early 1184 (app. 31); but 7 of the 10 witnesses occ. in R.A.L. IX no. 2474, of 30 May 1163 (app. 21), and 4 in IV no. 1292, of March 1162/3 (app. 20); 4 of the 10 witnesses do not occ. after the 1160s: Philip son of William the archdcn., last certain occ. 30 May 1163 (above p. 103), Robert son of William the constable, last certain occ. 30 May 1163 (p. 58), Wiger, last occ. 1170 (p. 147), William son of Gunter, last occ. 1170 (p. 148)

b) Adam, who occ. here as treas. for the only time, is presum. Adam de Amundeville, son of Jordan treas.; he occ. as can. both before and after c. 1180 (above p. 118); as can. he occ. in R.A.L. IX no. 2603 (app. 31), which is certainly later than this charter, as M. William subdean in no. 2603 had succeeded M. Ralph of Caen who occ. as subdean in this charter

A revised date is suggested:

If the charter belongs to the 1160s, the period of Martin's treasurership, there are two possible explanations of Adam's appearance as treas.: either he was acting as treas. in the absence of Martin, or on this occasion his name was given as Adam treas., in the same way that Robert son of William the constable sometimes occ., as he does in this very charter, as Robert constable (see above p. 58)

If the second possibility be allowed, this charter has 8 of its 10 witnesses, including Adam and Robert son of the constable, in R.A.L. IX no. 2474, of 30 May 1163 (app. 21), and it may therefore belong to c. 1163.
