II no. 576), receiving two-thirds of demesne tithes of Kingerby and Elsham, and all demesne tithes of Owersby (Lincs.) as augmentation of his preb. (1) It was suggested by H. E. Salter (E.H.R. xxxv (1920) 213) that Geoffrey should be identified with Geoffrey (de Gorron), abbot of St. Albans (1119-46), and that he was succeeded as can. of Lincoln by his successor as abbot, Ralph (Gubion), who occ. in chapter at Lincoln prob. second half of 1147 (below p. 135). (fn. 16) Although it was possible for a head of a Ben. house to hold a preb. in a secular cathedral, (fn. 17) the evidence for Geoffrey and Ralph is far from conclusive, and there is nothing to suggest that later abbots of St. Albans had any claim to a stall in the Lincoln chapter.

(2) Geoffrey might have been a member of the midland family of Abbas (le Abbe, Abbot). A Geoffrey Abbas (? a relative) occ. frequently in the early years of king Henry II in Leics., Warwicks., and elsewhere (see, e.g., P.R. 2-4 Hen. II, ed. J. Hunter (1844) pp. 145, 184, 185; P.R. 5 Hen. II (P.R.S. i) pp. 26, 52, 57; R.B.E. I 18, 21, 25, II 655, 699; cf. V.C.H. Leics. V 52).
