Manor and church of Stow St. Mary (Lincs.) belonged to bp. of Dorchester in 11th cent. (R.A.L. I no. 247); monastery founded there before 1055 (Cart. Eynsham I no. 1A); bp.'s manor 1086 (D.B. I 344a); monastery refounded c. 1092 (Cart. Eynsham I nos. 5, 26) and transf. to Eynsham (Oxon.) c. 1094 (ibid. no. 6). Manor in bp.'s hands from c. 1094 (cf. R.A.L. I no. 135), conf. to bp. by pope 30 Jan. 1126 (ibid. no. 248), 28 Apr. 1139 (ibid. no. 249), 9 Feb. 1146 (ibid. no. 251), 13 Apr. 1149 (ibid. no. 250), and 6 June 1163 (ibid. no. 254). Called preb. of Stow in Lindsey in 1254 Val. Norwich p. 279).
Tithes of bp.'s demesne and two-thirds of parishioners' tithes in 'Stou' (? Stow St. Mary or Stow Longa) conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (ibid. no. 252 p. 199), and of 'Lestou', certainly Stow St. Mary, 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 206); but preb. Stow had only third of tithes, the remainder held by preb. Corringham, who in 1277 was bound to provide a pr. in Stow church (Rot. Gravesend p. 95; and see below pp. 171-2).

Stow in Schalby's obit. roll (obit II p. ccxliii). Commem. 24 Sept. (R.L. I). Prob. to be identified with William de Essendine, parson of Ingham from Nov. 1240 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 56), who occ. as can. Michaelmas 1274 × Michaelmas 1275 (R.A.L. X no. 2875).
