Footnotes

  • 1. John Lok de Okele, appr. of W. de Lalham, cornmonger, adm. 1310 LBD 128, J. Lok 1324 Will (a tenant in St. Martin, St. Bride, and at Henley). - OE Locc, a by-name from OE locc 'a lock of hair'. Okele probably Ockley Sr.
  • 2. William le Coteler 1300-1 LBC 86 (juror St. Sepulchre), 1310 LBD 241 (sworn to keep the gate of Newgate), W. le Cotiller 1332 S [no. 2, 6s. 8d.], 1334-5 LBE 268 (juror FarrE).
  • 3. Nicholas le Longe, a hatter, by his will of 1308-9 left to Dionisia his daughter houses and shops in le Bailly. Nicholas was father of Laurence [no. 6] and Richard [no. 7], and father-in-law of John de Parys [no. 4], perhaps of Richard Sprot [no. 5]. Taxpayers 3-7 form a family group. - La baillye is the Old Bailey in St. Martin and St. Sepulchre.
  • 4. John de Paris 1305-6 Mayors 239 (corder), 1317 LBE 81 (repr. Farr), J. de Parys 1307 LBC 240 (corder, juror concerning Fleet Bridge), 1321 Will (of St. Martin). Edith his wife was a daughter of Nicholas le Longe; cf. no. 3.
  • 5. Richard, son of Henry Sprot, whose will was enrolled in 1302-3 and who was a tenant in St. Martin. John, son of Richard Sprot, became the ward of Laurence le Bret [no. 16] and Simon Mars, goldsmiths, in 1327 (LBE 223); he had a house near Ludgate. Richard and his mother were legatees of Joan Goldcorn, widow of Bartholomew le Smith (or Locksmith) in 1303-4 (CW 162). Richard Sprot may have been a goldsmith or a smith. - Cf. 1292 S [Bas 2].
  • 6. Laurence, son of Nicholas le Lung 1305-6 Mayors 239, L. Longe 1320 LBE 129, L. le Long 1334-5 ib. 268 (deceased). Perhaps a hatter; cf. no. 3.
  • 7. Richard, son of Nicholas le Longe 1308-9 CW 203, R. le Long, goldsmith 1327 LBE 223 (surety of no. 16 as a guardian), R. le Longe, goldsmith 1349 Will (apparently of St. Martin; parents Nicholas and Agnes). Presumably ate Longe is an error for le Longe and hardly means <<at the house of (Laurence) le Longe>>.
  • 8. Henry de Amondesham, appr. of Richard de Rikemeresworth, adm. 1310-11 LBD 65 (articled in 1276), H. de Amodesham, capper of Fleet St 1319 Pat. A case of late admission. - Amersham Bk.

  • 13. Robert le Chaundeler 1325 Cor 118 (surety FarrE), 1334-5 LBE 268 (witness with no. 2), 1343 LBF 92 (deceased; Alice, his widow, resident near the New Temple).

  • 17. Probably the widow of Henry le Sporoner 1305 Mayors 204 (of Fleet St), H. le Sporiere 1307 LBC 240 (juror concerning Fleet Bridge), or of Richard le Sporier 1305 Mayors 204 (brother of Richard).
