The Lord Keeper delivered a Message from the King, in hæc verba: videlicet,

Message from the King, touching the E. of Bristol's Petition.

"His Majesty having heard of a Petition preferred into this House by the Earl of Bristoll. so void of Duty and Respect to His Majesty, that His Majesty hath great Cause to punish it; He hath also heard with what Duty and Respectfulness to His Majesty your Lordships have proceeded therein; which His Majesty conceives to have been upon the Knowledge you have, that he hath been restrained for Matter of State; and His Majesty doth therefore give your Lordships Thanks for the same, and is resolved to put this Cause upon the Honour and Justice of your Lordships in this House. And therefore His Majesty hath commanded me to signify to Your Lordships His Royal Pleasure, that the Earl of Bristoll be sent for as a Delinquent, to answer in this House his Offences committed in his Negotiations before His Majesty's being in Spaine, his Offences whilst His Majesty was in Spaine, and his Offences since His Majesty's coming from Spaine, and his Offence in scandalizing the Duke of Buckingham immediately, but mediately and by Reflection scandalizing his Majesty, with whose Privity, and by whose Directions, the Duke did guide his Actions, and without which he did nothing.

"All which His Majesty will cause to be charged against him, before your Lordships, in this House."

Committee to return the Thanks of the House to the King, for His Confidence in them.

Whereupon a Committee was appointed to attend His Majesty, and present Him humble Thanks from the House, for the Trust and Confidence which His Majesty placed in the Honour and Justice of this House.

The Committee being returned; the Lord Treasurer reported, That they find the said Earl to be charged by way of Accusation in the House, by a Letter read here in the House; and by a Message delivered by the Lord Keeper from the King; and therefore they think fit he be sent for by the Gentleman Usher.

Whereupon it was Ordered, That the Gentleman Usher shall forthwith bring the Earl of Bristoll before their Lordships, in the Upper House of Parliament.
