DIE Lunæ, videlicet, 8 die Augusti,
Domini tam Spirituales quam Temporales, quorum nomina subscribuntur, præsentes fuerunt:
MESSAGE from the Commons, by the Lord Cavendish and others:
Message for Conference concerning Religion.
That the Kights, Citizens, and Burgesses of the House of Commons, desire a Conference with their Lordships, touching Matters of Religion, humbly leaving to their Lordships the Time, Place, and Number of Committees.
Answered:
Answer.
The Lords have appointed a Committee of theirs, of Sixteen, to meet a proportionable Number of the Commons To-morrow, at Eight, in the Painted Chamber.
The Names of the said Lords Committees:
Message to the H. C. acquainting them with a
Message sent to the Commons, by Mr. Attorney General and Mr. Doctor Eden.
Message from the King to be delivered to both Houses.
That the Lords have received a Message from the King, which is to be delivered unto the Lords and Commons together, by the Lord Keeper and the Duke of Buckingham. And that His Majesty hath commanded the Lord Keeper to require the Lord Treasurer, the Lord Conway, and Sir John Cocke, to assist his Grace therein; wherefore the Lords require a present Meeting with their whole House, presently, in the Painted Chamber, if it may so stand with their Occasions.
Answered:
Answer.
That the Commons have taken this Message into their Consideration, and will return a speedy Answer, by Messengers of their own.
Agreed, That any of the Lords of this House may explain the King's Message at this Conference, or any Thing else that shall concern them.
Answer to this Message, by Sir Edward Cooke, and others of the House of Commons:
Message from the H. C. touching the preceding one.
That, in the Message sent to them by the Lords, they consider Three Circumstances: videlicet, the Time, the Persons, and the Place. That they have assented unto the Time. For the Persons, they desire (for clearing of all Doubts, and keeping a-foot the good Correspondency between them) to understand whether their Speaker be to come also with them. The Place, they think it too weak to bear so great a Multitude; and therefore have, at this Time, presumed under-hand to intimate St. Maryes Church for the Meeting, if it so please their Lordships.
Answered by the Lords:
Answer.
That the Meeting of both Houses is to be understood of a Committee of both Houses, and not otherwise. That nothing hath been omitted by their Lordships Care, nor their Servants, touching the Strength of the Place appointed; yet, with Thanks for their Care herein also, their Lordships have changed the Place to the Hall in Christ-church. And, it being now late, they have appointed the Meeting to be at Two this Afternoon, if the Occasions of the Commons will then permit it; whereof they desire a speedy Answer.
The Messengers returned Answer:
Reply by the Messengers of the Commons.
That the Commons will meet, at the Time and new Place appointed. And whereas Intimation is given, that there might be some Use of a worthy Member of that House in the delivering of this Message from His Majesty, though it be against the very fundamental Privileges of the House of Commons, yet they have given Way unto it; with this, that he speak as the King's Servant and Commissioner, and not as a Member of their House.
Adjourn.
Dominus Custos Magni Sigilli declaravit præsens Parliamentum continuandum esse usque in diem crastinum, videlicet, nonum diem instantis Augusti, hora 9a, Dominis sic decernentibus.
