Prayers.

Loan by the City.

ORDERED, That the Sum of Eight thousand Pounds, Part of the Ten thousand Pounds assigned for Supply of the Occasions of the Treaty for Peace, yet behind, and unpaid, be paid, from time to time, as the same shall be paid in, to such Person or Persons as the Commissioners appointed to treat with his Majesty shall appoint.

Ordered, That the Committee appointed to go to the City do take care for hastening the Payment in of the said Sum of Eight thousand Pounds, according to the Subscriptions.

Treaty with the King.

The Commissioners appointed to go to his Majesty came up to the Clerk's Table: And Mr. Speaker, by Command of the House, delivered unto them their Instructions, and their Commission; and the Propositions agreed upon, and presented to the King at Hampton Court; upon which they are to treat with his Majesty, now in the Isle of Wight.

Deans and Chapters Lands.

Mr. Speaker left the Chair: And, according to former Order, the Grand Committee sat, to proceed upon the Ordinance for Sale of the Lands of Deans, Deans and Chapters, &c.

Mr. Dodderidge in the Chair.

Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair.

Upon Mr. Dodderidge's Report;

It is Ordered, That the Grand Committee do meet on Friday Morning, upon the Ordinance for Sale of the Lands of Deans, Deans and Chapters, &c.: And that Mr. Speaker do not take . . . Chair.

Impropriations.

Ordered, That at the next Sitting of the House, Mr. Wheeler do make Report of the Ordinance for enabling Trustees to purchase in Impropriations.

Pime's Debts.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of Haberdashers Hall, that the Ordinance of the Fifth of January 1645, for the Payment of Mr. Pime's Debts, and Provision for his Children, be fully and effectually executed: And they are hereby authorised and required to be assisting to the Trustees mentioned in the said Ordinance, in the Sale of those Lands, and in gathering the Rents and Profits thereof, to be disposed of by the said Trustees, according to the true Intent of the said Ordinance, and putting in Execution every Clause and Article of the said Ordinance.

Parliament Guards.

Ordered, That the Sum of Two thousand Pounds be raised, for Maintenance of the Guards that attend the House: And that it be referred to the Committee at Haberdashers Hall, to consider, How the said Sum of Two thousand Pounds may be speedily furnished out of the Duke of Bucks, Earl of Holland, and others, in that Engagement, referred by former Order to that Committee; or to propound such other Way as they shall think sit, for raising the said Two thousand Pounds: And are to report at the next Sitting of the House.

York Militia.

A Letter from York, of 9 Septembris 1648, was this Day read.

Resolved, &c. That the Sequestrations of the Delinquents, upon these new Engagements against the Parliament, within the County of York, and the Fines that shall be set upon such Delinquents, shall be employed towards the Maintenance of the new Militia raised in the County of York.

Resolved, &c. That all the Arrears of the old Compositions of Papists, in the County of York, shall be assigned and employed towards the Maintenance of the new Militia raised in the County of York.

Resolved, &c. That the Sum that shall be raised for the Maintenance of the said Forces, out of these Ways, shall not exceed the Sum of Twelve thousand Pounds.

Ordered, That an Ordinance be brought in upon these Votes: And that it be referred to Sir Thomas Widdrington, and Colonel Copley, to prepare and bring in this Ordinance.

The humble Petition of the Committee appointed by Ordinance, for settling the Militia within the City of York, and County of the same, was this Day read.

Resolved, &c. That the Sum in the Ordinance appointed for the new Militia in the County of York, be made Thirteen thousand Pounds: And that the latter One thousand Pounds be employed towards the Maintaining of the new Militia, and for carrying on other Charges in the City of York, and County of the same.

Letter to the King.

Ordered, That Sir John Clotworthy, Mr. Edward Stephens, Mr. Prideaux, Sir Thomas Widdrington, Mr. Lisle, Colonel Copley, Mr. Swynfen, Colonel Birch, be added to the Committee formerly appointed to prepare a Letter to the King.

Ordered, That the Committee do withdraw.

Leave of Absence.

Ordered, That Mr. Boscawen, a Member of this House, have Leave to go into the Country.

Ordered, That Mr. Salwey junior, a Member of this House, have Leave to go into the Country; and to stay Fourteen Days.

Message to Lords.

Mr. Wheeler carried to the Lords, for their Concurrence, Order for Collection for the Parish of Plaxtoll, for building a Church there: Four Orders for distributing and assigning the Ten thousand Pounds, provided for carrying on the Occasions of the Treaty: Order for One thousand Pounds for the Countess of Kildare: Order for Three hundred Pounds for the Countess of Kildare: Order for One hundred and Fifty Pounds for Major Rolf: Order concerning Captain Evans, and others: Order for Twenty Pounds to Wm. Ripley, out of Sir Charles Keymish his Fine: Order for Forty Pounds to Gilbert Mabbott, out of Sir Charles Keymish his Fine: The Order concerning Mr. Pimme's Debts.

He also carried up several Ordinances concerning Delinquents; viz. of William Helyar, Sir Peter Richaut, John Johnson, Arthur Heveningham, Sir Henry Clerk, Wm. Cartwright, Sir Wm. Ingleby, John Bois, Edward Palfreyman, Peter Leicester, Richard Marshall, Wm. and Charles Salisbury, Lord Marquis Hertford.

Answer from Lords.

Mr. Wheeler brings Answer from the Lords; That the Lords do agree to the Four Orders for distributing and assigning the Ten thousand Pounds, provided for carrying on the Occasions of the Treaty: To the Order for One thousand Pounds for the Countess of Kildare: To the Order for three hundred Pounds to the Countess of Kildare: To the Order for Twenty Pounds to William Ripley, out of Sir Charles Keymish his Fine: To the Order for Forty Pounds to Gilbert Mabbott, out of Sir Charles Keymish his Fine: To the Order concerning Mr. Pymme's Debts: To the Ordinance for a Collection for the Parish of Plaxtoll, for building a Church there: To the rest of the Particulars of the Message, the Lords will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Isle of Silley.

A Letter from the Governor of Plymouth, of 8 Septembris 1648; with the Copy of an Examination of one Wm. Cotton, of Weymouth, Mariner; and the Copy of a Letter, from the Governor of Plymouth to the Governor of Silley, of 8 Septembris 1648; were this Day read.

City Arrears.

Ordered, That according to former Order, the City do return the Names of such Persons, within the City of London, as owe any Arrears of the Assessments for the Army: And that the Committee appointed to receive and require the same, do give an Account thereof to the House at the next Sitting.

Supply for Plymouth, &c.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the West, to consider of some Way, for the present Furnishing of Four thousand Pounds for Plymouth; and to bring in an Ordinance, for providing the said Four thousand Pounds by such Way as they shall think sit; and to report.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of what the Governor of Plymouth has done, in reference to the Governor of Silley.

Ordered, That Mr. Prideaux do, by an Express, give notice to the Governor of Plymouth, of the Care and Course the House has taken in Answer to his Letter.

Message from Lords.

A Message from the Lords, by Dr. Bennet and Dr. Heath;

The Lords have commanded us to acquaint you, That they have resolved to adjourn their House till This-daysevennight; and desire this House to do the like, if it may stand with the Conveniency of this House.

They desire to put the House in mind of the Pass formerly sent, for Monsieur Circourt to go to the King.

Adjournment.

Resolved, &c. That the House be adjourned from the Rising this Day, till Tuesday Morning next, at Eight of Clock.

Committees.

Ordered, That, notwithstanding the Adjournment of the House, the Committee of the whole House, for the Ordinance concerning the Sale of Deans and Chapters Lands, do meet on Friday next; with Power to adjourn: And that all Standing Committees do notwithstanding meet.

Militia.

Ordered, That the Ordinance for settling the Militia of the whole Kingdom be reported on Tuesday Morning next, the first Business.

Answer to Lords.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has thought sit to adjourn till Tuesday next: To the other Particular, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Hereford Militia.

An Ordinance for raising Monies for maintaining the Militia in the County of Hereford, was read; and, upon the Question, passed; and ordered to be sent to the Lords for their Concurrence.

Colonel Harley is appointed to carry it to the Lords.

Reduced Officers.

Colonel Copley reports certain Votes from the Committee to whom the Petitions of reduced Officers were referred: And it is ordered, that the said Committee do prepare and bring in an Ordinance, in pursuance of those Votes.

Message from the Lords.

A Message from the Lords, by Dr. Bennett and Dr. Heath;

The Lords have sent you an Ordinance, for settling Mr. Payler, and others, in their Places in the Tower; with some Amendments: To which they desire the Concurrence of this House.

The Lords command us to put you in mind of the Petition of the Field Officers of the Four Regiments of Colonel Herbert, Colonel Eyre's, Colonel Graye's, and Colonel Humfrey's Regiments.

Payler's &c. Appointment.

The Ordinance for settling Mr. Payler, and others, in their Places in the Tower, with the Amendments sent from the Lords, were this Day read.

Ordered, That the said Ordinance be referred to the Committee of the Army, and to the Committee of the Navy, joined as to that Business, to whom the same was formerly referred, for the Regulating of those Offices.

Reduced Officers.

The humble Petition of all the Field Officers and Captains of Colonel Herbert, Colonel Eyre's, Colonel Graye's, and Colonel Humphrie's Regiment, formerly designed for the Service of Ireland, was this Day read.

Ordered, That the said Petition be referred to the Committee of the Army, to state the Business, and present the same to the House.

Answer to Lords.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; The House has considered of your Lordships Message; and have resolved to send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Grant to Welden.

Ordered, That the Sum of One hundred Pounds, formerly ordered to be paid to Colonel Ralph Welden, Governor of Plymouth, by the Committee of the County of Kent, be charged upon the Sequestrations of that County, and forthwith paid out of the said Sequestrations to the said Colonel Ralph Welden, or his Assignee.

Letter to the King.

Mr. Annesley reports the Letter to be sent to the King: The which was read; and, upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be sent to the Lords for their Concurrence: And that it may be signed by the Speakers of both Houses.

Leave of Absence.

Ordered, That Mr. Holland have Leave to go into the Country; and to stay there for a Fortnight or Three Weeks.

Letter to the King.

Mr. Annesley brings Answer from the Lords, That the Lords do agree to the Letter to be sent to the King, by him carried to the Lords: And have ordered the Speaker of the Lords House to sign the same.

Provost Marshal.

Mr. Knightley reports from the Committee of Lords and Commons at Derby House, their Opinion touching a Provost Marshal.

Resolved, &c. That a Provost Marshal be appointed for the Safeguard of the Parliament: And that Francis Bethan be, and is hereby appointed Provost Marshal for that Purpose.

Ordered, That Francis Bethan have a Commission granted unto him to be Provost Marshal, for Apprehension of such as are within Twenty Miles of London, without the Liberties of the City, against the Ordinances of Parliament; and of other dangerous Persons that have listed, or are listing themselves: And that the said Provost Marshal have Power to apprehend and surprise all such Person or Persons as sell, sing, or publish, Ballads or Books, scandalous to the Parliament, or their Proceedings; and to suppress Playhouses, and apprehend the Players; and keep the said Persons apprehended in Custody; and carry them to the Committees of the Militias of the several Counties and Places where they shall be apprehended; to take Course with them, according to Ordinance of Parliament: The said Power to continue for Three Months.

And it is further Ordered, That the Sum of Two hundred Pounds be advanced, and charged upon Haberdashers Hall, for Pay of the said Provost Marshal: And that the Sum of Two hundred Pounds more be added, for the Guards that attend this House; and be charged upon Haberdashers Hall: And that the Committee of Derby House do grant a Commission to the said Francis Bethan, accordingly.

Leave of Absence.

Ordered, That Mr. Blakiston have Leave to go into the Country for Six Weeks.

Lord Inchequin.

Ordered, That the Committee of the Navy do forthwith pay the Sum of a Hundred and Twenty Pounds due to the Lord Inchequin from the said Committee, for the Service of a Frigate of his; to be employed for the Charge of sending over the Son of the said Lord Inchequin, who is to be exchanged for certain Gentlemen, by the Lord Inchequin kept Prisoner there.

And it is further Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee at Derby House, to take care that the said Prisoners be delivered, before the Lord Inchequin's Son be delivered: And the said Sum of One hundred and Twenty Pounds is to be paid to such Person or Persons as the Committee at Derby House shall appoint to receive the same.

Revolted Ships.

Mr. Knightley reports an Ordinance for the Lord Admiral to give Indemnity to Commanders, Officers, and Mariners, in the revolted Ships: Which was this Day read; and, upon the Question, Committed.

Mr. Lisle, Mr.Allen, Mr. Knightley, Sir Robert Harley, Mr. Scott, Mr. Povey, Mr. Stroud, Mr. Hodges, Mr.Nelthorp, Mr.Dodderidge, SirRobert Pye, Mr. Wheeler, Mr.Copley;

This Committee, or any Five of them, are to meet To-morrow in the Afternoon; and to sit in the Queen's Court.

Resident in Holland.

Ordered, That Mr.Strickland be ordered to go into Holland, upon his former Negotiation with the States General and Provincial, as Resident there for the Parliament of England.

Grant to Allen.

Ordered, That the Sum of Two hundred Pounds be paid unto Lieutenant Colonel Edward Allen, or his Assigns, upon his Account; and be charged upon Haberdashers Hall, in Course: And the Acquittance or Acquittances of the said Lieutenant Colonel Edward Allen, or his Assignee, testifying the Receipt thereof, shall be a sufficient Warrant and Discharge to the said Committee, or to the Treasurers there; or to such other Person or Persons as shall pay the same.

Coals for City Poor.

Mr. Bond reports from the Committee of the Revenue, the State of the Grant of Four thousand Chaldron of Coals, Water-measure, to the City of London, free of Impost, or any other Charges, for the Benefit of the Poor of the said City.

Ordered, That the Sum of a Thousand Pounds, of the last Three Months of the Nine Months Arrears of the City of London, for their Assessments for the Army, be detained in their Hands, and be disposed of, and laid out, for Provision of Coals, for Relief of the Poor of the said City.
