Prayers.

Cooke's Sequestration.

THE humble Petition of Wm. Cooke, of Highnam in the County of Gloucester, Esquire, was this Day read: And likewise a Certificate, under the Hands of the Committee of Gloucester, of the Twentieth of July 1646, certifying, That no Information appears before them sufficient to bring his Estate under the Ordinance of Sequestration.

Resolved, &c. That the Sequestration laid upon the Estate of Wm. Cooke, of Highnam, in the County of Gloucester, Esquire, by Order of this House, of 3 Novembris, 1643, be hereby taken off, and discharged; and that he be left to the ordinary Course of Proceedings.

Catelyn's Sequestration.

Resolved, &c. That the humble Petition of Richard Catelyn, late a Member of this House, be referred to the Examination of the Committee of Lords and Commons for Sequestrations; to proceed therein according to Justice, notwithstanding any Order of this House for the Sequestering of his Estate.

Scarborough Writ.

Ordered, &c. That a Warrant shall issue forth, under Mr. Speaker's Hand, directed to the Clerk of the Crown in Chancery, for a new Writ to be issued, for the Electing and Returning of a Burgess for the Borough of Scarborough in the County of Yorke, in the room and place of Sir Mathew Boynton, deceased.

Sequestrations.

Resolved, &c. That the Committee of Lords and Commons for Sequestrations, may proceed in all Sequestrations laid on by Order or Direction of this House, in like manner as in other Cases of Sequestration; except in the Cases that concern such Persons as have been Members of this House in this Parliament; and excepting such Persons whose Cases are already referred to the said Committee, to be reported to this House.

Cardigan, &c. Prothonotaries.

Ordered, &c. That, To-morrow Morning, the Ordinance sent from the Lords, concerning the Prothonotaries Place for the Counties of Cardigan, Caermarthen, and Pembroke, be read.

Answer from Lords.

Colonel Birch brings Answer, That, to the Ordinance which he carried to the Lords, for a Rent-charge of Fifty Pounds per Annum, out of Mr. Henry Lingen's Estate, to Lieutenant Anthony Berrowe, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Sir John Evelyn brings Answer, That the Lords do agree to the Vote he carried to them, concerning the bestowing the Earl of Kingston's Fine upon Mr. William Pierrepoint.

Mr. Gurdon brings Answer, That, to the Order for putting the Laws and Ordinances in due Execution for the better observing the Lord's Days, and the Publick Fast-Days, the Lords will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Grant to Berrowe.

Ordered, upon the Question, That the Sum of Seven hundred Pound be bestowed upon, and paid unto Anthony Berrowe Gentleman, or his Assignee, out of the Fine of Henry Lingen, of the County of Hereford, Esquire, a Delinquent, or out of the Profits of the Sequestration of the said Estate, the which shall first happen, in lieu of Fifty Pound per Annum assigned to the said Anth. Berrow out of the said Estate: And that the Acquittance of the said Anthony Berrowe shall be a sufficient Discharge to the Sequestrators, and likewise to the Treasurers at Goldsmiths Hall, for so much of the said Sum of Seven hundred Pounds, as shall be paid, either by the said Sequestrators or Treasurers, upon this Order.

The Lords Concurrence to be desired herein.

Colonel Birch is appointed to go to the Lords with this Message;

The Ordinance for settling a Rent-charge of Fifty Pounds per Annum upon this Anth. Berrowe, and his Heirs, for ever, issuing out of the Estate of this Henry Lingen, in lieu of which this Sum of Seven hundred Pounds is by this Order granted, is since passed the Lords, being formerly sent to them from this House for their Concurrence.

Martial Law.

Ordered, and Ordained, by the Lords and Commons, assembled in Parliament, That for the better regulating and ordering the Forces to be employed in this Service of Dublyn, both while they are in England, and when they shall come to Dublyn, that Colonel Michael Jones, Commander in Chief of the said Forces, shall have, and hereby hath, the Power of Martial Law, to proceed therein, according to the Articles for the Army under the Command of Sir Thomas Fairefaxe; calling to his Assistance such Officers of the Army as shall be requisite.

Message from Lords.

A Message from the Lords, by Sir Edward Leech and Dr. Aylett;

The Lords have commanded us to deliver unto you this Message; They desire a Conference, by Committees of both Houses, concerning the Army, and some Things for Dispatch of Business of the Houses, To-morrow at Eleven of Clock, in the Painted Chamber, if it may stand with the Conveniency of this House: An Ordinance for the Visitation and Reformation of the University of Oxon: This moved from this House; and the Lords have agreed to it, with these Alterations: A Report from the Committee of the Admiralty, with the List of Captains Names for the Summer's Fleet: This was sent to this House from the Lords; and returned from this House, with some Alterations; the Lords do adhere to Captain Somerster; to the other Alterations they do agree: An Ordinance for sending certain Books, that are yet in Lambeth House, to the University of Cambridge; in which they desire the Concurrence of this House. The Lords desire to put you in mind of Mr. Pennoyer and Mr. Hill's Ordinance; which they desire you to take into Consideration: An Ordinance against Tumults: It moved from this House; and the Lords have agreed to it, with some Alterations: A Request from the States Ambassador to go to the King: The Lords think fit to grant the Messenger a Pass, to be signed by the Speakers of both Houses; and desire the Concurrence of this House: The Lords desire to put this House in mind of Mr. Bolton to be of the Assembly of Divines.

Conference agreed to.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree to the Conference desired by the Lords To-morrow at Eleven of Clock, in the Painted Chamber.

Oxford University.

The Lords Additions returned to the Ordinance for the better regulating the University of Oxon were all twice read.

The Question was propounded, That an Addition be made to the Additions made by the Lords.

And the Question being put, Whether this Question shall be now put;

It passed with the Affirmative.

Resolved, &c. That there be Addition of Members of this House in this Ordinance.

Resolved, &c. That the Number of Members of this House, that shall be added, shall be Six-and-Twenty.

Mr. Lisle, Mr. John Lenthall, Sir Gilbert Gerrard, Mr. Scott, Sir Thomas Wrothe, Mr. Doyle, Mr. Prideaux, Mr. Tate, Mr. Bond, Mr. Ashurst, Mr. Bulkley, Mr. Kyrle, Mr. Recorder, Mr. Marten, Sir John Burgoyne, Sir Thomas Dacres, Mr. Nicoll, Sir John Maynard, Mr. Gourdon, Mr. Grimston, Dr. Bond, Mr. Morley, Mr. Gewen, Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Grove, Mr. Knightley, are added to the Commissioners, in the Ordinance for the better regulating the University of Oxon.

The Clauses for adding Four Gentlemen to be Visitors in this Ordinance; for adding Sixteen Peers, Members of the House of Peers; and for adding Six Members of the House of Commons; were read; and, upon the Question assented unto.

The Clause for changing the Names "Committees" into "Commissioners," in all the Clauses throughout the Ordinance, were read; and, upon the Question, assented unto.

The Members of the House of Commons that were added by the Lords, and agreed unto, were Thomas Lord Wenman, James Fiennes Esquire, Wm. Lenthall Esquire, Speaker of the House of Commons, Denzell Holles Esquire, Sir Robert Harley Knight of the Bath, Humphrey Sallway Esquire.

The Clauses, giving Power to the Visitors, or any Five of them, to restore such to their Places and Profits as have been unjustly turned out; and for avoiding all Elections to Places as have been made since the University was a Garison; and for appointing, that all such Persons as shall be chosen to any Headship, Fellowship, or Scholarship, in the University of Oxon, shall pass an Examination and Approbation of the Assembly of Divines, &c.; were all read; and, upon the Question, disagreed unto.

Resolved, &c. That, at the Conference with the Lords, appointed to be To-morrow, the Amendments made by this House, upon the Amendments offered by the Lords, to the Ordinance concerning the regulating the University of Oxon, be communicated.

Sir Robert Harley is appointed to go to the Lords, to desire, that this House may confer To-morrow, at the Conference, concerning these Amendments.

Mr. Selden, Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Rous, are appointed Managers of this Conference.

Navy Appointment.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth concur with the Lords, in appointing Captain Wm. Somerster to be Captain of the Swallowe, as he was first sent from the Lords to this House.

Lambeth Library.

An Ordinance for divers Books in the Study over the Cloysters in Lambeth House, amongst those of Archbishop Bancraft's, this Day sent from the Lords, was this Day read; and, upon the Question, passed.

Earl of Worcester's Estate.

The Amendments to the Ordinance concerning the satisfying a Debt to Mr. Hill and Mr. Pennoyer, out of the Sale of Part of the Earl of Worcester's Lands, returned from the Lords, were this Day read; and, upon the Question, assented unto.

Ordered, &c. That the Petition of John Watson, and others, be referred to the Consideration of the Committee formerly appointed to consider of the Ordinance for satisfying a Debt to Mr. Hill and Mr. Pennoyer out of the Sale of Part of the Earl of Worcester's Lands, where Mr. Reynolds hath the Chair.

Oxford Ministers.

Ordered, &c. That the Ministers, formerly sent down to the University of Oxon, do continue there till further Order: And that the Sum of Two hundred Pounds be charged upon the Receipts of the Revenue, and paid by the Committee of the Revenue, for the Maintenance of the said Ministers during their Abode there upon this Service.

Pass to the King.

Resolved, &c. That the Request of the States Ambassador, to have a Pass to go to the King, upon Occasion of the Death of the Prince of Orange, be taken into Consideration To-morrow Morning.

Assembly of Divines.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth concur with the Lords, That Mr. Bolton be added to the Assembly of Divines.

The Amendments, sent from the Lords, to the Order requiring Justices of Peace, and other Officers, to put in due Execution the Laws and Ordinances for the better Observation of the Lord's Day, and publick Fast-Days, and for suppressing of Tumults, were read; and, upon the Question, assented unto
