Assessment.

THE House this Day resumed the Debate upon the Amendments to the Bill of Assessment after the Rate of One hundred thousand Pounds per mensem.

The Preamble to the Bill was read.

Resolved, That, instead of these Words; viz. "to its former Station then it appeared, being occasioned by;" these Words; viz. "they found this Nation through;" be inserted.

Resolved, That these Words, "of this Nation," in the Sixth Line in the Preamble, be omitted.

Resolved, That these Words, in the Seventh Line of the Preamble; viz. "that not only;" and these Words, "was on Foot;" be omitted; and that these Words, "engaged in," be inserted in the same Line, next after the Word "Interruption."

Resolved, That these Words, "unto above," in the Tenth Line, be omitted; and that in the same Line, next after the Word "Millions," these Words; viz. "of Pounds Sterling, and upwards;" be inserted.

And the said Preamble, thus amended, being put to the Question, was agreed unto.

The next Clause in the Amendments was read.

Resolved, That these Words, in the Twelfth Line of the Tenth Folio, in the Amendments; viz. "and as was practised under the late Single Person's Government, during the aforesaid Interruption;" be omitted.

Resolved, That the Word "Cavaliers," in the Fourteenth Line of the Tenth Folio of the Amendments, be omitted; and that these Words, "Enemies in Arms," be inserted, instead thereof.

Resolved, That the Word "Medium," in the Fourteenth Line in the Tenth Folio of the Amendments, be omitted; and that this Word, "Means," be inserted, instead thereof.

Resolved, That the several Ridings in Yorkshire be transposed; and that the West Riding be placed first in the Bill; and the rest of the Ridings placed in such Order, in this Bill, as they were heretofore set and placed in other Bills of Assessment.

Resolved, That these Words; viz. "made by a Pound-Rate, or otherwise, as formerly;" be inserted in the Tenth Line of the Fifty-ninth Folio: And that the Proviso be inserted in this Bill, as was in the former Bill.

Ordered, That this Debate be adjourned until To-morrow Morning: And that the Committee to whom this Bill was referred, do meet this Afternoon; and prepare and bring in the Proviso To-morrow Morning.
