Wednesday, the 17th of August, 1659.

Trin. Col. Cambridge.

THE humble Petition of the Fellows of Trinity College.

Ordered, That Dr. John Wilkins be, and is hereby, constituted and appointed Master of Trinity College in Cambridge, with all the Rights, Privileges, Profits, and Appurtenances thereunto belonging, to hold the said Mastership to him the said Dr. John Wilkins in as large and ample Manner, to all Intents and Purposes, as any Master of the said College might and ought lawfully to hold and enjoy the same: And that, upon the said Dr. Wilkins taking the Engagement, Mr. Attorney General do prepare a Patent for passing the said Place to him accordingly: And that Mr. Speaker do sign a Docket for passing the said Patent under the Great Seal; and that the Commissioners for Custody of the Great Seal do pass the same under the Great Seal, accordingly.

Physician to Ely-House, &c.

The Question being propounded, That Dr. Gurdon be restored to the Place of Physician to Ely-House and the Savoy;

And the Question being put, That that Question be now put;

It passed with the Affirmative.

And the main Question being put; It was

Resolved, That Dr * Guerdam be, and he is hereby, restored to the Place of Physician to Ely-House and the Savoy.

Army Appointment.

Mr. Chaloner reports from the Council of State, That Captain Rose have a Commission to command a Company of Foot in the Isle of Man, for the Service of the Parliament and Commonwealth.

Resolved, That this House doth approve of Captain Rose to command a Company of Foot in the Isle of Man: And that he have a Commission made to that Purpose.

Delinquents Estates.

The humble Petitions of several Persons, whose Names are subscribed, on the Behalf of themselves, and many others, who have made Discoveries of Concealments due unto, and unjustly detained from, the Commonwealth, was this Day read.

An additional Act, appointing Sequestrators, was this Day read the First time.

Resolved, That this Act be now read the Second time.

The said Act was read the Second time, accordingly.

Resolved, That this Bill be committed to the Committee of Inspections.

Best's Estate.

Ordered, That the Committee of Inspections do bring in a Bill for Sale of all the Lands, Tenements, Hereditaments, Goods, Chattels, and personal Estate, of Richard Best, one of the Farmers of the Excise, for Satisfaction of the Monies due by him to the State.

Ordered, That Mr. John Goodwin do report the Amendments to the Bill concerning the Treasury To-morrow Morning, the first Business; nothing to intervene.

Irish Adventurers.

Mr. Solicitor Reynolds reports Amendments to the Bill for settling Lands upon the Adventurers and Soldiers in Ireland: Which were twice read.

Ordered, That the Debate upon this Bill be adjourned until Saturday Morning next.

House to sit.

Resolved, That the House sit this Afternoon, upon the Business of Money.

The House adjourns till Three of the Clock.

Customs, &c.

ORDERED, That it be referred to the Committee of Inspections to state the Accompts of the Commissioners for the Customs and Excise, as to their Receipts and Disbursements and to Monies retained in their Hands for Salary, and otherwise; and present their Opinion therein to this House, what is fit to be done therein: And that Mr. Richard Darley and Mr. Dormer be added to the Committee for Inspections, as to this Business.

Duty on Wines, &c.

Colonel Rich reports, a Proposal from Mr. Hawkins, touching the Excise of Wine, Beer, Ale, Cyder, and Tobacco: Which was read.

Ordered, That this Proposal be referred to the Committee for Inspections, to ripen and perfect it; and then present it to this House, with their Opinion therein.

Ordered, That the Committee for Inspection do prepare and bring in the Bill or Bills for settling the Excise and Customs in the Way it now is, on Monday Morning next, to continue for such time as this House shall think fit.

Taverns, Inns, &c.

Ordered, That the Committee for Inspections do prepare and bring in a Letter, to be directed to the Justices of Peace, and Clerk of the Peace, in the respective Counties, to certify the Number of Taverns, Inns, and Alehouses, in the respective Counties; and what was spent in them, respectively, the last Year: The said Letter to be approved of by this House, and signed by the Speaker.

A Letter from Leicester, of the 16th of August 1659, from Major Hobart, was this Day read.

Supply.

The House took into Debate, how to have a present Supply of Money for carrying on the present Affairs of the Commonwealth.

Resolved, That this Debate be adjourned until To-morrow Morning, Eight of Clock: And that the Members of this House do attend at that Hour.

Union with Scotland.

Whereas it was ordered, That the House should have been resolved into a Grand Committee, upon the Bill of Union of Scotland with England, To-morrow Morning; It is Ordered, That it be put off until Friday Morning: And that, on Friday Morning next, the House be resolved into a Grand Committee, upon that Business: And that Mr. Speaker do then forbear to take the Chair.
