Friday, the 3d of April, 1657.

Bristoll Ministers.

A BILL for explaining a former Act for the more frequent Preaching of the Gospel, and Maintenance of Ministers in the City of Bristoll, and for supplying certain Defects in the said former Act, was this Day read the Second time; and, upon the Question, committed to the Committee to whom the Bill for Exeter is referred.

And it is Ordered, That the said Committee be revived, as to this Business: And are to meet To-morrow in the Afternoon, in the Exchequer-Chamber: And that Mr. Aldworth be added to that Committee.

Assessments.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee To-morrow Morning at Ten of Clock, upon the Bill for Assessments.

Excise, &c.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, at Ten of Clock, upon the Bills of Excise, Assessments, and other publick Bills for Money.

Steinmers, &c. Nat.

Mr. Noell reports from the Committee for Naturalization, The Amendments to the Bill for Naturalizing of Henry Steinmer, and others: Which were twice read.

The Question being put, That this House doth agree with the Committee, That Dame Mary Herbert, and Katharine her Daughter, be put out;

It passed in the Negative.

The Question being put, That the House doth agree with the Committee, That Benjamine the Son of Robert Johnson, of Newcastle, Merchant, be left out;

It passed in the Negative.

The Question being put, That the House doth agree with the Committee, That Peter Mark Sparke be left out;

It passed in the Negative.

And the rest of the Amendments to this Bill were, upon the Question, agreed.

Ordered, That the said Bill, so amended, be ingrossed.

Petition from London.

The humble Petition of the Lord Mayor, Aldermen, and Commons, of the City of London, in Common Council assembled, was read.

Ordered, That this Petition be referred to the Committee for Naturalization, to examine the same; and to offer to the House such Proviso as they shall think fit.

Lord's Day.

Mr. Grove reports Amendments to the Bill for the better Observation of the Lord's Day: Which were twice read.

The Question being put, That the House doth agree with the Committee in the Clause reported to be inserted touching Fairs and Markets;

It passed with the Negative.

Resolved, That these Words be added to the Amendment in the 19 Line of the 12 Page, after the Word "Nations;" viz. "as it is expressed in the humble Petition, and Advice of the Parliament to his Highness the Lord Protector." And all the rest of the Amendments were agreed.

Resolved, That these Words be inserted in the Bill, between the 9 and 10th Lines of the 12th Fol. viz. "unless such Parent, Guardian, Master, Mistress, or Tutor, shall, in the Presence of the Churchwardens, Overseers for the Poor, or other Officer, or one of them, give, or cause to be given, unto such Child or Servant, so offending, due Correction." And the Bill, so amended, was, upon the Question, ordered to be ingrossed.

Letter from Protector.

A Letter from his Highness the Lord Protector, dated this Day, directed to the Speaker, was this Day read.

Resolved, That a Committee be appointed to wait upon his Highness the Lord Protector, upon this Letter.

Protector to be attended.

Ordered, That the same Committee be appointed that was formerly appointed Friday 27th of March last, to attend his Highness, to appoint the Time and Place for this House to attend his Highness on some important Affairs: And that Mr. Godfrey, Colonel Zankey, Mr. Downing, Colonel Talbott, Mr. Pitts, Mr. Nath. Bacon, Mr. Franc. Bacon, General Disbrow, Mr. Barkley, Colonel Twisleton, Mr. Lawrence, Major-General Jephson, Captain Lilborne, Mr. Jenkinson, Sir John Trevor, Mr. Thelwell, Major-General Lilborne, Colonel Wilton, Major-General Packer, Colonel Thisselthwayt, Captain Stone, Mr. Waller, Mr. Lucy, be added to that Committee.

Resolved, That this Committee are to meet this Afternoon at Three of the Clock, in the Speaker's Chamber: And that they attend, and hear what his Highness shall speak to them; and report it to the House.
