Thursday, the 19th of March, 1656.

Leave of Absence.

ORDERED, That Colonel Whetham, being one of the Council in Scotland, have Leave to go into Scotland.

Ly. Sterling, &c.

Ordered, That Colonel White, Mr. Burton, Colonel Mathewes, Mr. Bodurda, Mr. Lucy, Mr. Bennett, Captain Blackwell, Colonel Cocks, Doctor Clerges, Mr. Fowell, be added to the Committee for the Lady Sterling.

Remonstrance.

The House this Day, according to former Order, resumed the Debate upon the Remonstrance.

The Second Clause in the Tenth Article was read.

The Question being put, That the Word "by" do stand in this Clause;

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That these Words, "and in," be inserted in the Place of "by."

The Question being put, That these Words, "in case there be any," do stand;

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That these Words, "and such," be inserted in the Place of it.

Resolved, That these Words, "and in the Holy Spirit, God coequal with the Father and the Son," be inserted.

Resolved, That, after the Word, "God," these Words, "the Father," shall be added.

Resolved, That the Word "Discipline" be transposed after the Word "Worship."

The Question being put, That the Words, "blessed for ever," do stand in this Place, next after, "true God;"

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That, next after the Words "Father and the Son," these Words, "One God, blessed for ever," be added.

Resolved, That these Words, "in other Things," be inserted next before the Word "differ."

Resolved, That these Words, "and do acknowledge the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the revealed Will and Word of God," be added next after the Words "for ever:" and the Clause, so amended, being put to the Question, It was

Resolved, That this Clause, "And such who profess Faith in God the Father; and in Jesus Christ his eternal Son, the true God; and in the Holy Spirit, God coequal with the Father and the Son, One God, blessed for ever; and do acknowlege the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the revealed Will and Word of God; and shall in other Things differ in Doctrine, Worship, or Discipline, from the publick Profession held forth; Endeavours shall be used to convince them, by sound Doctrine, and the Example of a good Conversation;" be Part of the Remonstrance.

The next Part of this Clause was read.

The Question being put, That the Word "therein" do stand in this Part of the Clause;

It passed with the Negative.

Resolved, That, after the Word "protected," these Words be added, "from all Injury and Molestation in the Profession of the Faith, and Exercise of their Religion."

The Question being put, That this Clause, thus amended, beginning thus, "But that they may not be compelled, &c." and ending thus, "publick Peace," be Part of this Remonstrance;

The House was divided.

The Yeas went forth.

So it was Resolved, That this Clause, beginning thus, "But that they may not be compelled, &c." and ending thus, "Disturbance of the Publick Peace," thus amended, shall be Part of this Remonstrance.

Resolved, That the Committee for the Petition of the City of London be revived, and do sit on Monday, at Three of the Clock in the Afternoon.-

Debate adjourned.

Resolved, That this Debate be adjourned till Three of the Clock this Afternoon.

Remonstrance.

THE House resumed the Debate upon the Remonstrance.

Resolved, That the Clause beginning thus, "So that this Liberty, &c." and ending thus, "under the Profession of Christ," be Part of the Remonstrance.

A Clause was offered to the Remonstrance, in these Words, viz. "And those Ministers, and others, who agree in Matters of Faith with the true Protestant Reformed Religion, although in their Judgment and Practice they differ in Matters of Discipline and Worship, shall not only have Protection in the Way of their Churches and Worship respectively, but be esteemed sit and capable (being otherwise duly qualified) of any Civil or Ecclesiastical Trust, Promotion, or Employment, whatsoever, in these Nations."

Ordered, That this Paper be committed to Mr. Secretary, Major-General Whalley, Sir Richard Onsloe, Mr. Godfrey, Mr. Nath. Bacon, Lord Commissioner Fiennes, Lord Commissioner Lisle, Mr. Moody, Mr. Bampfeild, Sir Charles Wolsley, Lord Broghill, Sir John Reynolds, Mr. Jenkinson, Major-General Goff, Colonel Cooper, Sir Wm. Strickland, Major-General Kelsey, Mr. Drake, Lord Commissioner Whitelock, Mr. Bedford, Mr. Grove, Sir John Thorugood, Major-General Boteler, Colonel Jones, Major-General Haines, Mr. Marbury, Colonel Zanchy, Mr. Brisco, Mr. Desbrow, Captain Stone, Colonel Ingoldsby, Sir John Hobard, Mr. Trevor, Mr. Vincent, Major-General Packer, Alderman Foote.

Ordered, That it be referred to the same Committee, to bring in a Clause, That this Liberty shall not extend to such as shall revile or reproach the Confession of Faith, so to be held forth: And that General Desbrow be added to this Committee; and they are to meet To-morrow Morning, at Seven of the Clock in the Speaker's Chamber.

The last Clause in this Article was read.

Resolved, That, in this Clause, instead of the Words "to the contrary of," these Words be inserted; viz. "so far as they are contrary to:" And the Clause, so amended, was agreed; and ordered to be made Part of this Remonstrance.

The Eleventh Article was read.

The First Clause being read;

The Question being put, That this Clause be committed;

The House was divided.

The Yeas went forth.

So it passed with the Negative.

Resolved, That the Words "Fee-Farm, or other," be added before the Word "Rents," in the Clause now read.

Some Amendments being offered to this Part of this Article; upon the Question, It was

Resolved, That this Clause, so amended, be Part of this Remonstrance: And was in these Words; viz. "That all Acts and Ordinances of Parliament made for the abolishing, &c."

The last Clause of the Article was read, and agreed; and ordered to be Part of this Remonstrance.

Resolved, That the Debate upon the Remonstrance be adjourned till To-morrow Morning.

Resolved, That the Petition of the Lord Craven be read on Tuesday Morning next.

Stowell's Petition.

Resolved, That the humble Petition of Sir John Stowell be read on Tuesday Morning next.
