Settling the Government.

Prayers.

THE House proceeded in the Debate adjourned until this Morning, touching the Title of the Act concerning the Government.

The Question being propounded, That the Title of this Act be, An Act declaring and settling the Government of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the Dominions thereunto belonging;

And the Question being put, That the Words "settling" stand in this Question;

It passed with the Affirmative.

And the Question being put, That these Words "in a Single Person, and a Parliament," be added to the Question;

The House was divided.

The Yeas went forth.

Colonel John Birch, Tellers for the Yeas: 71.

So it passed with the Negative.

And the main Question being put; It was

Resolved, That the Title of this Act be, An Act declaring and settling the Government of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the Dominions thereunto belonging.

The First Clause in the Act, containing these Words, "Be it Enacted and Declared, by his Highness the Lord Protector, and the Parliament of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the Dominions thereunto belonging; and it is hereby Enacted and Declared, by the Authority aforesaid;" being read, was, upon the Question, agreed.

Resolved, That these Words be inserted, in the Blank in the Oath of the Lord Protector; viz. "One Act of Parliament, intituled, An Act, declaring and settling the Government of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the Dominions thereunto belonging:" Which was done accordingly; and the same twice read.

Resolved, That the same Words be inserted in the Blank in the Oath to be administered to the Council: Which was done accordingly; and the Words twice read.

Resolved, That the same Words be inserted into the Blank in the Oath to be administered to the Lords Commissioners of the Great Seal: Which was done accordingly; and the Words twice read.

Resolved, That this Debate be adjourned till Tomorrow Morning.
