Thomas Lufkin of Ardleigh, co. Essex, gent v Richard Large the younger of the same, husbandman

Abstract

Lufkin complained that, Large, a husbandman in his parish, had called him 'a base rogue, shag-hair'd rogue, blockheadly rogue, and a bastard'. Process was granted on 1 November 1639, but no further proceedings survive.

'Your petitioner is a gentleman of coate armour and of an ancient familie; and that one Richard Large the younger, husbandman, of the parish of Ardleigh, hath within these three monthes much abused your petitioner sayinge to his face that your petitioner was a base rogue, shag-hair'd rogue, blockheadly rogue, and a bastard, with other speeches both tending to his disparagement, and much provokinge him to duell'

Petitioned that Large be brought to answer.

Maltravers granted process on 1 November 1639.

Bound to appear 'in the Court in the painted Chamber within the palace of Westminster'.

Signed by Thomas Lufkin.

Sealed, subscribed and delivered in the presence of John Watson.
