Rowland Lacon of Kinlet, co. Salop, esq v George Southall of the same, yeoman

January 1640

Abstract

Lacon complained that Southall had said that Lacon 'was a base fellow and did run his country', at an alehouse in Kinlet, Shropshire in May 1639. Process was granted on 24 January 1640 and Lacon entered bond on the 27th; but no further proceedings survive.

2/76, Petition to Arundel

'About May last one George Southall of Kinlett, yeoman, did in a common alehouse in Kinlett speake divers opprobrious words against your petitioner and, amongst others, did say that your petitioner was a base fellow and did run his country to the great dishonor and disgrace of your petitoner, being qualified as above.'

Petitioned that Southall be brought to answer.

Maltravers granted process on 24 January 1640.

2/77, Plaintiff's bond

27 January 1640

Bound to appear 'in the Court in the painted Chamber within the Pallace of Westminster'.

Signed by Charles Gardiner of the parish of St Benedict's, London, gent, on behalf of Lacon.

Sealed, subscribed and delivered in the presence of John Watson.

Notes

Rowland Lacon was the son of Sir Francis Lacon of Kinlet, co. Salop, knt, high sheriff in 1612, and Jane, daughter of Anthony Browne, viscount Montacute. Rowland married Mary, daughter of Sir Robert Purselowe, knt.
