252 GREAVES V BRADSHAWE

George Greaves of Birchover, co. Derby, gent v George Bradshawe of Eyam, co. Derby, gent

October 1638

Abstract

The cause of Greaves's complaint against Bradshaw remains unknown but this was clearly a countersuit to Bradshaw's prosecution of him for scandalous words provocative of a duel [see cause 63]. On 20 October 1638 there was reference to an agreement between the parties.

Summary of proceedings

Dr Duck acted as counsel for Greaves and Dr Exton for Bradshaw. On 20 October 1638 Dr Duck had to prove the libel, but there was mention of a Mr Latham and an agreement between the parties.

Notes

There was a George Greaves of Hill juxta Stanton [now Stanton-in-the-Peak], co. Derby, the younger brother to John Greaves (b.1607), and mentioned in G. D. Squibb (ed.), The Visitation of Derbyshire, 1662-1664 (Publications of the Harleian Society, new series, 8, 1989).
