Writ of mandamus, 12 May, 13 Richard II
NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Norwyk, 1 January, 14 Richard II.
John late count of Mortain, granted the under-mentioned manor to Robert de Bruar’, his heirs and assigns, at a rent of 16l. yearly. Later, Henry III, king of England, son of the said John, granted and confirmed the manor at the same rent to Adam son of Hervey and Juliana his wife, then tenants of the manor, and the heirs of the said Juliana who was daughter and heir of John son of Hugh, to whom the said Robert de Bruar’ had sold the manor. Long ago, but how long the jurors know not, the said rent of 16l. was granted by a king of England to the then earl of Kent, ancestor of Thomas de Holand, the present earl, but how it was to be held the jurors know not; and by virtue of that grant the tenants of the manor have long been intendant to the ancestors of the said Thomas in respect of the rent, and the present tenants are intendant to Thomas.
A certain Roger de Ormesby, grandfather of Juliana de Ormesby named in the writ, to wit, father of Thomas de Ormesby her father, was seised of the manor in his demesne as of fee; and after his death the said Thomas entered into the manor and died similarly seised thereof. Roger had issue two daughters, Ellen and Gunnora. Thomas had issue the said Juliana de Ormesby, Thomas and Burgia. Ellen had issue Alice and Agnes. Alice had issue Alice. Gunnora had issue John. John had issue Elizabeth. After the death of Thomas son of Roger, Thomas his son entered into the manor and died without heir of his body. After his death, the said Juliana and Burgia, his sisters, entered into the manor, demised it for 4s. yearly to William Clere, now deceased, and Denise his wife, the present tenant, and died without heir of their bodies. The said John, Ellen and Gunnora also died. The said Elizabeth daughter of John, and Agnes and Alice, daughters of Ellen, as kinswomen and heirs of Juliana and Burgia, granted the manor to the aforesaid William and Denise and the heirs of William; and William and Denise occupied the manor accordingly and took the issues and profits thereof, and Denise still occupies it and takes the issues.
Ormesby. The manor, worth nothing beyond the said 16l. Whether, on the facts given above, it is held of the king or of the earl of Kent, the jurors know not.
The said Juliana died in 49 Edward III, day not known. At the time of her death the said Elizabeth was 30 years of age and more, Agnes was 50 years of age and Alice was 25 years of age. Agnes and Elizabeth died without heir of their bodies. Alice daughter of Ellen also died, and on her death Alice her daughter, kinswoman of the said Agnes and Elizabeth, aged 30 years, is the next heir.
