CAMBRIDGE. Inq. (indented) taken at Arnyngton, 6 May, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned pleas etc. for life, of the inheritance of Philippa, his wife, deceased, daughter and heir of Lionel, duke of Clarence.
Arnyngton. Pleas and perquisites of a view of frankpledge, with the suits of the townships of Harleton, Herdwyk and Toft, held of the king.
He died on the feast of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, in Christmas week last. Roger de Mortuo Mari, aged 9 years and more, is son and heir of the said Edmund and Philippa.

He held the under-mentioned rents and pleas etc. for life, of the inheritance of Philippa, his wife, as above.

Schedule by the escheator, stating that he attended the county court held at Huntingdon on Saturday the eve of Whitsunday, 5 Richard II, in order to extend a view of frankpledge in Wolle belonging to the earl, and that twelve jurors were called and were all present, but that two of them, John le Eyr of Gyddyng and William Dyke, withdrew and left undone what it was their duty to do in the king’s behalf, so that the escheator could not proceed.

SURREY. Inq. taken at Shire, 2 April, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned watermill etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Shire. A watermill, 26 a. arable, 50 a. pasture and heath, 26 a. wood and rents of 6l. 16s. 1d. and 1 lb. pepper, held of Richard, earl of Arundel, by service of two knights’ fees and a half and suit to the said Richard’s court of Reygate every three weeks.
He died on the feast of St. Stephen last. Roger, his son, aged 9 years and more, is his heir.

He held the under-mentioned manor of Whaddon in his demesne as of fee.

He held no lands etc. in Bremmesgrave and Norton on the day of his death because long before his death he demised the under-mentioned manors of Bremmesgrave and Norton, with the king’s licence and by a fine levied in the king’s court, to William Latymer of Daneby, knight, Richard Lescrop, knight, Nicholas Carreu, Peter de la Mare, knight, John de Bysshopesdone, clerk, Walter de Colmptone, clerk, and Hugh de Borastone, to hold for life.
He held the remaining under-mentioned lands etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Bremmesgrave and Norton. The manors, held of the king in chief.
Ctyfton on Temede. A toft, 2 carucates of land and 3 a. meadow in the hands of tenants rendering 53s. 8d. yearly, 77s. 7d. rent of assise of free tenants, a watermill let at farm for 6s. 8d. yearly, 20 a. great wood and pleas etc. of court, held of Brian de Cornwayle and his heirs by knight’s service.

Zeddeffen. A toft, a carucate of land, 2 a. meadow, 7s. 6d. rent of assise of free tenants and pasture in common, tenure not known.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Winchester, 20 June, 6 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor, rent and meadow in his demesne as of fee.
Worthy Mortymer. The manor, worth 10l. 16s. 8d. yearly, and 17s. 8d. rent in Houke Mortymer from tenants there holding according to the custom of the manor, as of the king’s ancient demesne, held of the king in chief, service not known. On 1 November, 1 Richard II, he granted a yearly rent of 6l. 13s. 4d. from the said manor and rent to John Ethelake, herald of arms, for life; and on 9 December, 3 Richard II, he granted a yearly rent of 100s. from the same manor and rent to William de la Launde for life.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Berdefelde, 5 March, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor called Lacheleghhall in his demesne as of fee. The manor is charged with an annuity of 6l. 13s. 4d. granted by the earl, by deed dated 9 March, 49 Edward III, to William Hornby for life, and with a like annuity granted by the earl, by deed dated 1 November, 49 Edward III, to John de Brystowe for life. The said William and John are still seised of those annuities.
He held no other lands in the county in his demesne as of fee or in service, because long before his death he demised the under-mentioned three-fourths of the manor of Thaxstede, with the king’s licence and by a fine levied in the king’s court, to William Latimer of Daneby, knight, and others (in all respects as the manors of Strattefeld Mortymer and Woghfeld above).
He held the remaining under-mentioned manors, views of frankpledge and court for life by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Philippa, his wife, deceased.
Lacheleghhall. The manor so called (extent given, including rents of 17s. 4d. yearly, of which 11s. 6d. has to be repaid to the lords of the fee), held of Henry de Ferers, knight, by the said service.
Thaxstede. Three-fourths of the manor, held of the king.
Great Berdefeld. The manor (extent given), held as parcel of the earldom of Gloucester. The extent includes a park with deer, the farm of lands in the borough there, and a leet held on Thursday in Easter week.

Stanbourne. A court held every three weeks, as of the honor of Gloucester.
Nortstanbrugge, The manor (extent given), held as parcel of the earldom of Gloucester. The extent includes a marsh which is of no yearly value because of the repairs to the sea-walls. Long before his death to wit, on 30 September, 3 Richard II, he demised the manor with the view of frankpledge and whatever pertains thereto, except fees, advowsons, wardships, marriages and escheats, to Nicholas Chaundeler, now deceased, and Robert atte Mershe, who is still living, to hold for 9 years from the above date, rendering to him and his heirs 26l. 13s. 4d. yearly at London, as appears by his letters indented, which have been shown to the escheator and jurors.
He died on 27 December last. Roger, his son by the said Philippa, aged 9 years and more, is their heir.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Stondon, Thursday in the second week of Lent, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manors and tenement for life by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of Philippa, his wife, deceased.
Stondon. The manor (extent given, including a park with deer), held of the king in chief as parcel of the honor of Gloucester.
Bokelonde. A tenement called ‘Popyshale’ (extent given), held as of the honor of Dover, by service of rendering 10s. yearly for ward of Dover castle. The extent includes 25s. 2d. rent of assise, out of which the following yearly payments have to be made, to wit, 10s. for ward of Dover castle as above, 5s. to the sheriff by the name of ‘scherrevyschot,’ 2s. to the same by the name of ‘surfice,’ 7d. to the manor of Bokelonde, and 1d. to the manor of Wedyhale.
Stondon. A manor called ‘Plessetes’ (extent given, including 21s. 11d. rent, out of which a payment of 20d. yearly has to be made to the sheriff by the name of ‘scherrevischot’), held of the earl of Stafford by service of wardship and marriage.

KENT. Inq. taken at Kyngesdoune, Thursday the eve of St. Benedict, 5 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned fourth part in his demesne as of fee.
Kynggesdoune. A fourth part of a manor, held of the king in chief, as parcel of the said manor, by homage, but by what homage the jurors know not.
He died on 27 December last. Roger, his son and heir, aged 8 years in the first week of Lent last, is heir to the said fourth part.

KENT. Inq. taken at Depeforde, Monday before St. Gregory, 5 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned moiety in his demesne as of fee.
Westgrenewych. A moiety of a toft, of a garden, of a dovecot and of 7 a. 1 rood (virgate) of land, held of the lord de Say, as of his manor of Westgrenewych, by fealty and suit to his court every three weeks, and by service of 2s. rent, according to the tenure of ‘gavelkyndes.’
Date of death as above. Roger and Edmund, his sons, ages not known, are heirs to the said moiety according to the custom of ‘gavelkyndes.’

KENT. Inq. taken at Osprenge, Friday after St. Valentine, 5 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee.
Shylenghelde. The manor, in the parish of Chilham, held of the king in chief, as of his castle of Dover, by a rent of 26s. for ward of the said castle, to wit, 6d. at the end of every week; except 21 a. arable which are held of the lord de Roos, as of his castle of Chilham, by 5d. rent to be paid yearly to the said castle, according to the tenure of ‘gavelkyndes,’ and 9 a. land which are held of Robert Smyth, who in turn holds them of the lord de Roos, as of the said castle of Chilham, by a yearly rent of 3 1/2d., according to the tenure of ‘gavelkyndes.’
Date of death as above. Roger, his son, is heir to the lands etc. held of the king in chief, and Roger and Edmund, his sons, are heirs to those held according to the tenure of ‘gavelkyndes’; ages not known.

KENT. Inq. taken at Sydyngbourne, Monday after St. Valentine, 5 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned toft and manor in his demesne as of fee.
Tonge. The toft of the castle, together with the manor annexed to the said toft, held of the king in chief, as of the castle of Dover, by service of a knight’s fee and payment of 20s. for ward of the said castle at the end of every 24 weeks; except the site of the said manor, 47 a. 3 r. land, 19 a. pasture, 13 a. meadow and 10 a. marsh, which are held of the king in chief, as of his manor of Middelton, by fealty and two suits of court yearly at the said manor of Midelton, to wit, at the first courts after Michaelmas and Easter, and by service of paying 17s. 1d. rent yearly at the said manor. And he was mesne lord of certain tenants in Monkenton, from whom he received 13s. 4d. rent yearly pertaining to the said manor of Tonge; and he defends the said tenants yearly against the abbot of Faversham by paying the said 13s. 4d. yearly to the abbot.

KENT. Inq. taken at Tonebregge, Friday the feast of St. Valentine, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned park by the courtesy of England, as of the right of Philippa, his wife, deceased.
Southfryth by Tonebregge. The park, held of the archbishop of Canterbury by homage; except 8 a. land by Newfryth within the precinct of the said park which are held of the prior of Rochester by 9d. rent according to the tenure of ‘gavelkyndes.’ The pannage and pasture of the park, together with 10l. of yearly farm forthcoming from certain tenements within the precinct of the park called ‘Inhammes,’ are worth 20 marks yearly over and above the cost of the paling and two ‘logges’ in the park. The prior and convent of Tonebrigge, in right of their church, have and ought to have 60 swine at large in the park every year, quit of pannage, and 2 sumpter-horses every other year fetching wood from the park on every day of the year, to wit, as much as they can carry and as often as they can carry it, and also one buck from the park every year on the day of St. Mary Magdalen. These things the prior and convent have had continuously since the foundation of their house. The earl of Stafford shall have 120 swine at large in the park every year, together with 700 swine of his tenants, quit of pannage.

KENT. Inq. taken at Derteforde, Monday before St. Valentine, 5 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned manors in his demesne as of fee. By letters patent made when he was of sound mind he granted life annuities of 40l. and 10l. out of the said manors to Thomas de Mortuo Mari, his brother, and Leonard Hakeluyt, his esquire, respectively.
Earhethe. The manor, with the ferry of Earhethe, held of the king in chief by homage, but by what homage the jurors know not.
Swannescompe. The manor, held of the king in chief, as of his castle of Rochester, by payment of 18l. yearly in the said castle at the feast of St. Andrew for ward thereof.
Date of death as above. Roger, his son and heir, aged 8 years and more, as the jurors believe, is next heir to the said manors.

NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Little Walsyngham, 26 January, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manors, rent and leet by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of Philippa, his wife, lately deceased.
Little Walsyngham. The manor (extent given, including a fishery, customs called ‘bisage’ and ‘wrongsheryngsylver,’ a leet held about the feast of St. George, a part of a leet held about Michaelmas, a fair held on the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, a market, 8s. yearly from the grazing of meadows in Berneye, and 40s. yearly from the office of reeve), held of the king in chief by service of rendering 10s. yearly to the king’s castle of Norwich as ‘waytefee.’
Brecham. The manor (extent given), which is parcel of the barony of Clare, held of the king in chief, service not known.
Stokesby, Oulton and elsewhere. 6l. 6s. 8d. rent, held of the king in chief.
Sharyngton. A leet held about the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, held of the king.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Clare, 13 February, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned castle, manors and messuage etc. by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Philippa, his wife, lately deceased.
Clare. The castle, with the market (extent given, including a fair with courts and a leet, a watermill called a ‘maltmille,’ a foreign rent of 48s. 8d. from divers tenants of the honor of Clare, 34s. 10d. from the farm of lands in Mildenhal, a great court pertaining to the honor of Clare worth 20 marks yearly, and leets at Denardeston and Multon), held of the king in chief, as of the barony of Clare, service not stated.
Erbery. The manor (extent given, including a leet held about Easter, and a piece of arable and meadow called ‘Horscroft’ by Clare and a piece of land and pasture called ‘Cokerescroft’ which fell into the lord’s hand by way of escheat and were granted by the earl to Thomas de Hildeburgh for life on account of good service to himself and Lionel late duke of Clarence), held as of the barony of Clare, service not known.
Hunden. The manor (extent given, including a park with deer and a leet), held as parcel of the earldom of Gloucester, service not known.
Wodehall in Sudburi. The manor (extent given, including a fulling-mill, a fishery called ‘Briggewater,’ a pasture called ‘Portmaniscroft,’ weavers’ looms (lame), 2 stalls, fairs on the feasts of St. Gregory and St. Bartholomew, and a leet), held of the king, service not known.
Southwelde. A messuage, 20 a. land, 40s. rent of assise and 2 lasts of red herrings payable at Martinmas, held of the king in chief, services not known.

SALOP AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, Thursday before St. Gregory, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned castles of Dolvoreyn and Mongomery and lands etc. mentioned therewith in his demesne as of fee.
Dolvoreyn. The castle, and the lordship and land of Kedewyng (extent given, including toll of the borough of Newtown), held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Mongomery. The castle, land and lordship, with the advowson of the church, and the hundred of Chirbury, held of the king in chief by service of 80 marks yearly.
[He also held in his demesne as of fee a yearly rent of 100s. from the sheriff of Salop by the king’s gift, for having the name of earl.] (fn. 1)
He held no other lands etc. in those parts, except certain lands etc. in the district (patria) of Wyggemore which are parcel of the castle of Wyggemore and are extended there, because long before his death, with the king’s licence and by a fine levied in the king’s court, he demised the under-mentioned castles etc. of Lodelowe and Knoclas to William Latymer of Daneby, knight, Richard Lescrop, knight, Nicholas de Carreu, Peter de la Mare, knight, John de Bisshopeston, clerk, Walter de Colmpton, clerk, and Hugh de Boraston, for life, to hold of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed.
Lodelowe. The castle, manor and town.
Knoclas. The castle, land and lordship.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Gloucester, Monday before the Annunciation, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Brymmesfeld by the courtesy of England, of the right and inheritance of Philippa, his wife, deceased.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Wynston and three-fourths of the manor of Byselegh in his demesne as of fee.
Brymmesfeld. The manor (extent given), held in chief, but of whom or by what service the jurors know not. The extent includes the pasture of Haselhanger, a park with deer, and two views of frankpledge.
Wynston. The manor (extent given), held in chief, but of whom or by what service the jurors know not.
Byselegh. Three-fourths of the manor with the members thereof (extent given), whereof one part is held of Thomas of Wodestok, earl of Bukyngham, of the honor of Hereford, by knight’s service, but of whom or by what service the other two parts are held the jurors know not. The extent includes a hundred court with two views of frankpledge, and rents at Hamptenet by Northlecch, Chirynton by Tettebury and Chorleton by Tettebury, members of the manor. From the value of the said three-fourths of the manor must be deducted a yearly rent of 13l. 6s. 8d. which was granted by a deed of Roger de Mortuo Mari, lord of Wygemore and Trym, to Philip de Hambury, the younger, clerk for life.

GLOUCESTER AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inq. (indented) taken at Kerlion, Wednesday in the fourth week of Lent, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned castles, manors and lordships etc. for life by the courtesy of England, of the right and inheritance of Philippa, his wife, deceased.
Kerlion. The castle and town, with the lordships and members thereof (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a barony. The extent includes a fulling-mill, a market every Thursday, fairs on All Saints’ day and the Tuesday after Holy Trinity, a park with deer, a fishery with a weir in the river Uske, rents of assise in Westrecoid, a monthly foreign court called ‘Netherwentescourt,’ rents from free tenants in Netherwent and the toll of Netherwent.
Leswiry. The manor, with the lordship of Lebenet (extent given), held of the king as above. The extent includes a monthly court held at Kerlion and the toll of Lebenet.
Edelogan. The lordship (extent given), held of the king as above. The extent includes a mill called ‘Morganesmull,’ a fishery in the river Uske called ‘seynes,’ and a monthly court held at Kerlion.
Uske. The castle, town and lordship, with the members thereof (extent given), held of the king in chief. The extent includes rents of assise in the borough of Uske, a market in the borough every Monday, fairs on St. Luke’s day and the Monday after Holy Trinity, and a fishery in the river Uske; and also the following members of the castle:—
New Grange. The manor (extent given, including three woods of great timber called Coidkyn or, Wellok and Pelthenny).
Lantrissen. The manor (extent given).

He held the remaining under-mentioned castles, manors and lordships etc. by the courtesy of England, of the right and inheritance of Philippa, his wife, deceased.
Brymmesfeld. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Wynston. The manor, tenure not known.
Byseleye. Three-fourths of the manor with the members thereof, whereof two parts are held of the honor of Radenore by knight’s service, and the third is held of Thomas of Wodestoke, earl of Bukyngham, in right of Eleanor, his wife, of the honor of Hereford, by knight’s service. A rent of 13l. 6s. 8d. is to be deducted from the value of the manor, as above (last inquisition).

Glasebury. The manor (extent given, including 2 watermills with ‘tolsestre’ and a ferry across the Wye), held ………….. by knight’s service.
The above manors of Clifford and Glasebury are subject to a rent-charge of 66l. 13s. 4d. yearly granted by the said earl to John Bromwych, knight, for life.
Buelth. The castle, land and lordship (extent given) held of the king in chief, service not known.
[Wiggemore]. The castle and manor (extent given, including a park, a wood called ‘Deurfeld,’ and rents of assise from the free burgesses of Wygemore), held of the king in chief by service of a barony. Extents are also given of the manors of Earls Leynthale (a member of the said castle) and Leynthale Starkere (adjacent to the said castle). The extent of the latter includes rents of Boryton and Elyton and a watermill at Boryton.
