Writ of certiorari to the escheator, on a petition from John de Wempton alleging that John son and heir of Thomas de Middelton, brother of the said Alice, gave him the premises, by the name of the manor of Byssebrok, in fee, and he enfeoffed William de Burton, knight, now deceased, of the said manor, who gave it in fee to Robert de Bayous in exchange for lands in Arkesden, co. Essex, and that subsequently the said William and the petitioner, having acquired the manor to themselves and the heirs of William from Philip de Melreth, clerk (who had it in fee by grant of the said Robert), gave it to Robert, son and heir of the said Robert, and the said Alice his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, to hold of them (the grantors) at a rent of a rose yearly, so that the custody of the manor, which is held as aforesaid of the petitioner (he having outlived William), ought at present to belong to him. 16 June, 3 Richard II.

SOMERSET AND DORSET. Inq. taken at Welles, Tuesday before Holy Trinity, 3 Richard II.
Robert Panes formerly held the under-mentioned manors, which came to the hands of Edward III by reason of the idiotcy of the said John Panes, his son and heir.
Laverton, co. Somerset. The manor, held of the heirs of the earl Marshal.
Pomeknolle, co. Dorset. The manor, held of the earl of Devon, lately a minor in the king’s wardship.
The said John son of Robert died at Shepton Malet in the house of Nicholas Gof on the feast of St. Peter in Cathedra, 1 Richard II. Joan wife of Roger Gratele, his sister, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Northampton, Saturday before Palm Sunday, 3 Richard II.
He held no lands etc. in the county, because 7 years and more ago he demised in fee all his manors and lands etc. to John Moubray, knight, Robert Charwelton, John Batayle and others.
He died on Sunday in Mid-Lent last. William de la Pole, his son, aged 5 years and more, is his heir.

Writ of Mandamus, 10 February, 3 Richard II
WARWICK. Inq. made at Colleshull in Ardern, Saturday before St. Peter in Cathedra, 2 (sic) Richard II.
Long before his death he was seised of a moiety of the under-mentioned messuage etc. as of the right and inheritance of Rose, his wife, daughter and one of the heirs of John de Ardern, knight. Afterwards he was outlawed at the county court of Warwick held on Monday after St. Andrew, 43 Edward III, for felonies committed in the county of Warwick, and the said tenements were thereupon taken into the king’s hand, extended at 73s. 4d. yearly, and let at farm for that sum to William Walshe by the king’s writ patent, and answer has been made therefor yearly in the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
He also held in reversion, as of the right and inheritance of his said wife, the other moiety of the said messuage etc. which was and still is in the possession of William Walsh by the courtesy of England by name of the pourparty of Isabel, his wife, sister of the said Rose and the other heir of the said John de Ardern.
Crudworth, Munworth and Sutton in Colfeld. A messuage, a carucate of land and 40s. rent, held of the earl of Warwick, services not known, except a virgate of land, which is held of the heir of Thomas Cuyly, services not known.
He died on 14 September, 2 Richard II. John, his son by the said Rose, aged 7 years, is his heir.
Since his death Roger de Wyrleye has occupied the premises and received all the issues, title not known.
Writ to the sheriff of Warwick,—in pursuance of a petition from Rose late the wife of the said Thomas for delivery to her of the premises, as her husband is now dead and had no estate in them except as of her right and inheritance,—to warn William Walssh to be before the king in the Chancery in the octave of Trinity next to shew cause why the said lands etc. of Rose’s inheritance should not be delivered to her, notwithstanding the letters patent dated 15 December, 45 Edward III, whereby the custody of the same was committed to him. 24 April, 3 Richard II.
Endorsed: (1) By the sheriff. The said William has been warned accordingly.
(2) In the Chancery. He made no appearance in the Chancery. Accordingly it was awarded that the king’s hand should be removed from the premises, and from the issues etc.
Writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, ordering them to send into Chancery the tenor of an inquisition touching the lands of the said Thomas taken ex officio before John Rous, late escheator in Warwick, in 45 Edward III, and returned in the Exchequer, 18 February, 3 Richard II.

WARWICK. Inq. taken ex officio before the said John Rous at Colleshull, Monday after St. Valentine, 45 Edward III.
The said Thomas was outlawed as above (previous inquisition), and on the day of the outlawry held the under-mentioned moiety etc. in right of Rose, his wife, it having come to him and her as her pourparty of the freehold of John de Ardern, her father.
Crudworth, Muneworth and Sutton in Colefeld. A moiety of a messuage, a carucate of land and 40s. rent, held of the earl of Warwick, services not known, except a virgate of land which is held of the heir of Thomas de Cuylly, services not known.
He held no other lands and no goods in the county on the day of his outlawry.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Great Lynton, 5 November, 3 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned lands etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Shodicampes, Nostrefeld and Horset. A messuage, 30 a. land, 1 1/2 a. meadow and 1 a. pasture, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 10d. yearly.
[Unspecified]. A vacant toft, held of the abbot of Waldene by service of 8d. yearly; 5 a. land, held of the heirs of Philip de Lynnebury by service of 12d. yearly; and a croft containing 2 a. land, held of Robert Tylneye by service of 1 1/2d. yearly.
He died on Monday after Michaelmas last. John Caiman, aged 40 years and more, is his cousin (nepos) and heir, to wit, son of Margaret sister of Peter [Boures his father]. (fn. 1)

Commission to Baldwin Fryvyle and John de Catesby to make enquiry touching a report that William Palmer holds lands etc. in Coventre, Coundon and Radford late of the said Roger, which ought to belong to the king as an escheat because Roger died without heir. 8 June, 3 Richard II.
WARWICK. Inq. taken before the said commissioners at Coventre, Thursday after SS. Peter and Paul, 4 Richard II.
The said William held the under-mentioned messuages, lands and rents etc. on the day of the above writ.
Coventre. 6 messuages, 4 shops, 6 cottages, 2 crofts in which are 8 tenter-grounds, a quarry and a garden.
Radeford. 24 a. land, called ‘Chilterne Leyes.’
Coventre. A rent of 26s. 8d. payable yearly by Robert Mympe and Isabel, his wife, for a messuage demised to them for life by the said Roger Oky.
All the premises were held by the said Roger on the day of his death jointly with Isabel, his wife, of Edward, late prince of Wales, in chief, by gift of Richard Frebern and Henry Clerc to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Roger. Roger and Isabel had issue a son Richard, and no more. Roger died 19 years ago, and Isabel married the said William Palmere. Afterwards the said Richard died without heir of his body. Roger had no other heir at all. Isabel wife of Roger died on Monday before St. Peter in Cathedra, 47 Edward III. Since then the said William Palmere has been in possession of the premises, without any other title than the above.

261. Robert Purry of Brethenham
Writ of Mandamus, 18 April, 3 Richard II
NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Bokenham, Thursday after St. Barnabas, 3 Richard II.
The said Robert held the under-mentioned messuage etc.
Rode Carleton. A messuage, 20 a. land and 2 a. wood, held of the heir of Philip de Orreby while the said heir was a minor in the wardship of Edward III, as of the manor of Tebenham, by service of 10s. yearly.
He died on 2 May, 15 Edward III. Sibyl, his daughter, then aged 7 years, was his heir. She died about Easter, 34 Edward III. Robert de Silkeston, aged 34 years, is her son and heir.
Thomas de Uvedale occupied the premises for 10 years by letters patent of Edward III [Calendar of Fine Rolls, 1337–1347, p. 224]. Afterwards, John de Brethenham occupied them for 3 years, title not known. Then John Jurdon, late parson of Qwedenham, occupied them for 5 years and took the issues and profits, title not known. Since then Roger Hert, Walter Lawe and John Aleyn have occupied them and taken the issues and profits, and still do so, title not known.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Wermenstre, 16 June, 3 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor, messuage etc. and rent for life, as of the right of Mary, his wife, who is still living.
Little Sutton. The manor, held of the lord de Burnell, by knight’s service.
Corselegh. A messuage and 2 carucates of land, held of Henry Sturmy and the prioress of Stodlee by knight’s service.
Wermenstre. 100s. rent, held of the lord of Wermenstre by knight’s service.
He died on 28 May last. William Pecche, knight, aged 22 years and more, is his son and heir.

LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 12 June, 3 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned tenements, shops etc.
Parish of St. Mary of Wolnoth. A tenement with a cellar and 5 shops with solars built thereon and a mansion adjoining the same on the south side, in Lumbardstrete.
Parish of St. Michael on Cornhull. 4 shops with solars built thereon adjoining the above-mentioned tenement on the north side.
The above tenement, cellar, shops and mansion formerly belonged to Gregory de Rokesle, sometime citizen of London. The mansion is now held by Francis Wyncheger by demise of the said John.
Parish of St. Mary of Wolnoth. A tenement, with a mansion adjoining the same in the parish of St. Michael on Cornhill, formerly belonging to Maud de Wight.
Parish of St. Dionis of Bakcherche. A messuage in Fanchirchestrete formerly belonging to the same Maud.
All the above are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
He died on 27 May last. William Pecche, knight, aged 21 years on Thursday before St. Valentine last, is his son and heir.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Akton, Thursday after SS. Peter and Paul, 4 Richard II.
He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the reversion of the under-mentioned manors and advowson, which Robert de Aston, knight, holds for life by his demise at a rent of 16l. 13s. 4d. yearly. After the death of the said Robert the manors and advowson ought to revert to the heirs of him, the said John Pecche, by Ellen, his late wife, by virtue of a gift and feoffment thereof made by Thomas Blondel, late rector of the church of Walbrok, London, to him and the said Ellen and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.
West Twyford. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the dean of St. Paul’s, London, by service of a red rose at Midsummer, except 40 a. pasture in the field called ‘Wodefeld’ which are held of the archbishop of Canterbury, as of his manor of Southburyhalle by service of 10s. 9d. rent yearly.
Malurees. The manor, held of divers lords, particulars not known.
He died on 17 May last. William Pecche, knight, aged 21 years on 15 February last, is his son and heir.

SURREY. Inq. taken at Croydon, Tuesday before St. Mary Magdalene, 4 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor and park in his demesne as of fee.
Redehall. The manor, held of Richard Brustowe by fealty and service of rendering 42s. yearly, and by suit to the said Richard’s court of Brustowe every three weeks.
Le Erze. A park so called, acreage not known, held as to a moiety thereof of Alice de Warbulton, as of her manor of Tanrugge, by fealty and service of 1d. yearly, and as to the other moiety thereof and 16 a. land called ‘Hokeworth’ of the earl of Stafford, as of his manor of Blacchynggelegh, by fealty and service of 1d. yearly.

He held the under-mentioned manor and lands jointly with Mary, his wife.
Abyndon. The manor, held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Boulogne, by service of a knight’s fee.
Stepylmordon. A toft and a carucate of land, held of Thomas de Haselden by service of a pair of spurs.
Abyndon. A toft, held of the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of 9s. yearly; and 6 a. land, held of William de Notton by homage and fealty.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Romeseye (date illegible). He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Pershute. A messuage, 41 a. land, 21 a. meadow, 8 a. pasture, 17 a. wood, 17s. 10d. rent, and a fishery from a place called Muxene as far as the bridge of Middelbrigge, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, as of the manor of Lokerlegh.
He died on Ash Wednesday, 43 Edward III. William Pershute, aged 23 years and more, is his son and heir.
The escheators were in possession and received the issues until Edward III by letters patent delivered them to John Polymond, burgess of Southampton.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Newent, Friday after St. Matthew, 3 Richard II.
(Stained with gall and torn.) He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Lye and Heydon. 2 messuages and 2 carucates of land, held of the alien priory of Derhurst by homage and fealty … the heir, if a minor, shall be in the prior’s wardship; … relief if of full age, to wit, double the rent of one year.
Date of death (torn away). John his son (age torn away) is his heir.
[Ralph] de Sancto Medardo, prior of Derhurst, and John de Webbeley [have occupied] the premises and received the profits thereof [since William’s death], title not known.

Commission in the form of a writ of Mandamus to William Cogan, knight and William Style, escheator in co. Somerset, 10 June, 3 Richard II.
SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Briggewater, Wednesday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 3 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of Elizabeth, his wife, daughter and heir of Hugh Luccomb.
Estlugcomb. The manor, held of the king in chief (service not stated).
He died in August, 47 Edward III, as the jurors understand. John, son and heir of the said Oliver and Elizabeth, died in parts beyond seas after his father’s death, but when or where he died, or who is his next heir, the jurors know not.
Henry Seynt Johan, Oliver’s brother, entered the manor and has occupied it and taken the goods and profits thereof ever since Oliver’s death, title not known.

He held the under-mentioned bailiwick to him and the heirs of his body by gift of Roger de Baukwell and Adam atte Meregrove made with the king’s licence, with remainder to his right heirs.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Esynton to him and Christina, his late wife, deceased, and the heirs male of their bodies, by gift of the aforesaid Roger and Adam.
He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Flulton to him and the said Christian and the heirs of their bodies.
He held the remaining under-mentioned lands etc. to him and the said Christina and the heirs male of their bodies.
Kannok. The bailiwick of the stewardship of the forest, held of the king by grand serjeanty, to wit, by service of keeping the said forest. A fourth part of a virgate of land in Frodeley and an assart and 1 a. meadow in Hepewas are appurtenant to the said bailiwick.

Hulton. A messuage and a virgate of land, held of the dean and chapter of Wolvernehampton by service of 12d. yearly.
Stretton. 23s. rent, held of Geoffrey de Congreve by service of 6d. yearly.
Pencrich. A burgage tenement, held of John Beverley by service of 20d. yearly.

He held the under-mentioned town in his demesne as of fee.
Gosford North. The town (extent given, including 20 husband-lands each containing 24 a.), held of the king in chief by homage and fealty, service of two-thirds of a knight’s fee, and service of rendering 14d. yearly for cornage by the hands of the sheriff.
He died on Wednesday before St. James last. Alexander Surtays, aged 24 years, is his son and heir.

Writ of Mandamus, 6 May, 3 Richard II
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Great Lymbergh, Wednesday before Corpus Christi, 3 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned lands on the day of his death.
Stalyngburgh. 12 a. arable and 34 a. meadow, held of the king in chief by knight’s service; and 6 a. meadow, held of William Moyne by service of 1d. yearly.
He died 80 years ago. He had a son named John, and three daughters named Elizabeth, Katharine and Margaret. After his death John, his son and heir, entered and was seised, and died without heir of himself; and after his death his three sisters and heirs entered and made a division among themselves. Elizabeth had a daughter called Flora. Flora and Katharine enfeoffed Robert Gosson of Keelby [of their shares], to hold to him and his heirs. Margaret enfeoffed Philip de Stalyngburgh of her share, to hold to him and his heirs, and he enfeoffed her thereof for life, with remainder to Agnes her daughter and the heirs of Agnes. The said Agnes, as well as the said tenements, were seized into the king’s hand, cause unknown. Thomas de Bernoldby, clerk, is Agnes’s son and heir.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the tenure of 1 1/2 a. land, 1 r. fresh meadow and 4 a. salt meadow in Stalyngburgh which William de Selby is said to have acquired from Norman Darcy and which were taken into the hand of Edward III for certain causes, and as to the circumstances of the said seizure and the names of the persons who have occupied the land since it was taken into the king’s hand as above. 8 May, 3 Richard II.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Lymbergh, Wednesday before Corpus Christi, 3 Richard II.
The premises were acquired by the said William from Norman Darcy and are held of the king in chief by knight’s service. They have been in the king’s hand for 32 years and more. Robert Gosson occupied them for 22 years and Walter Malet for 10 years, both by the king’s letters patent. Thomas de Bernoldby, clerk, is next heir to them.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Penreth, Tuesday, 16 April, 3 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee jointly with Mariota, his wife, who is still living, by a gift and feoffment thereof made with the late king’s licence to him and the said Mariota and his heirs by Adam Armistrang, parson of the church of Skelton, William Beauchamp, parson of the church of Kirkoswald, and John Waterward, chaplain, who had the manor by his gift and feoffment made with the same king’s licence.
Edenhale. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
He died on Thursday, 1 March, 3 Richard II. William, his son, aged 16 years and more, is his heir.

She did not hold any lands etc. in the county of the king in chief on the day of her death, but she was seised of:—
Shirreveslench. [A moiety of a toft and] garden, [a moiety of a carucate] of land, 2 1/2 a. meadow, and rents of 40s. and 3s. 4d., held ……… [by] knight’s [service].
She died on 6 October, 3 Richard II. Thomas le [Botiller, son of William le Botiller, knight], aged 22 years and more, is her heir.

Wlonkeslowe. A moiety of the hamlet (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
She died on 6 February last. Thomas de Stuche, aged 24 years and more, her son by the said William, is William’s next heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. (fn. 3) taken at Corbrygg, Saturday after SS. Simon and Jude, 3 Richard II.
The under-mentioned manor and land came to the king’s hand by the death of the said Walter [and by reason of the minority of Joan his daughter and heir] Gilbert de Curwen, knight, late escheator, occupied the manor immediately after Walter’s death, to wit, from the feast of the Circumcision, [1 Richard II, until the following Easter], and received 4l. 4s. 9d. therefrom by virtue of his office. Immediately afterwards [John de Nevill, lord of Raby, entered into the manor] by virtue of a grant of the king by letters patent [Calendar of Fine Rolls, 1377–1383, p. 103], [and received all the profits until the feast of the Purification] of the Virgin Mary, 2 Richard II. Immediately after that feast Isabel [de Tyndale, late the wife of the said Walter, was dowered of a third part] of the manor by John de Derwentwater, knight, late escheator, [by virtue of the king’s writ], and received the profits of the said third part until Thursday [after St. Cuthbert in September, 3 Richard II, on which day she died].
Devilleston. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee, rendering 4s. 5d. on the feast of St. Barnabas for ‘castelward’ at the castle of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, [and 14d. on the day of St. Cuthbert in September for cornage]. The extent includes [20 a. land held freely by] William Byryk [by suit of court to the three] chief courts every year and service of 5s. yearly, [and 1 a. land held freely by Thomas Ynman by service of] 3s. yearly.
Wollawe. One husbandland, held of Rowland Forster by service of 2s. yearly.
[The said Joan died] on the eve of St. Bartholomew, 3 Richard II. William de Claxton, knight, aged 40 years and more, [is her kinsman and heir].

The said Joan died seised of two-thirds of the under-mentioned manor and was in the king’s wardship by reason of her minority. John de Nevill, lord of Raby, was in possession of the said two-thirds by the king’s demise until her full age.

Writ of Plenius certiorari concerning the heir of the said Joan, on information that William de Claxton, knight, is not her heir, but that she had a sister, a minor, who is her heir and whose wardship ought to belong to the king. 28 March, 4 Richard II.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken on Thursday in Easter week, 4 Richard II.
Emmota, sister of the said Joan, aged 2 years and more, is a nearer heir to her than the said William de Claxton.
