The jurors (named below) say that Thomas is 21 years of age and more, having been born at Turvey on 9 February, 25 Edward III, and baptized in the church of All Saints there.

233. | THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF JOHN CANYNGES AND OF SUSAN HIS WIFE. |
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, whose father and mother held by knight’s service of Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford, late a minor in the king’s wardship; and to warn Richard Skargil, in whose keeping are the lands of the heir’s inheritance by the king’s commitment, to appear and show cause why the said lands should not be restored to him. Witnessed by Richard son of Edward prince of Aquitaine and Wales, guardian of England, at Walyngford, 14 September, 46 Edward III. | |
WILTS. | Proof of age (indented) made at Stratton St. Margaret, 20 September, 46 Edward III. |
Peter Harald, aged 40 years, Robert Palmere, aged 38 years, Thomas Lyle, aged 50 years, and John Henryes, aged 37 years, say that the said Thomas was born at Stratton St. Margaret and baptized in the parish church there on 23 March, 25 Edward III. They were there with John de Canynges, Thomas’s father, for the making of an agreement between him and William Fitzwaryn, knight, on a dispute between them, of which agreement indentures were made bearing date at Stratton aforesaid on the said 23 March, and the said indentures were found in the keeping of John’s executors.
John Palmere, aged 52 years, agrees and says that he had a son named James who died on that day, and whose obit was written in the missal of the church for a perpetual memorial on the said 23 March. Richard Gosye, aged 60 years, Nicholas Styne, aged 42 years, Edward Wympel, aged 38 years, and Laurence Horder, aged 36 years, agree and say that on that day they were enfeoffed of certain lands in Stratton St. Margaret, and know by the date of the charter of feoffment. John Robynes, aged 53 years, and John le Heose, aged 39 years, agree and say that they were with the said John Canynges at Stratton aforesaid on that day, when he was enfeoffed of a messuage, 15a. land and 1a. meadow there, and were witnesses to the charter of feoffment. They know because the charter bears date at Stratton St. Margaret on 23 March in the above year. John Tokkenham, aged 43 years, agrees and says that he saw Laurence, vicar of the church of St. Margaret of Stratton aforesaid, Thomas Bondy, and Christina Bonde lift the said Thomas from the sacred font. Thus all the jurors say that Thomas was 21 years of age on 23 March last. Richard Skargil was warned by John Jordan and William Godchip, but did not appear. |
