SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Suthampton, 18 January, 43 Edward III.
Suthampton. Two messuages and the office of weigher (officium pesagerie) in the town, held of the king in chief for life, by reason of a gift thereof which John de Bukyngham and others made to him and Thomas his son and the heirs male of the latter.
He died on 13 November last. The aforesaid Thomas his son, of full age, is his heir by the form of the said gift.
OXFORD. Inq. made at Chepyngenorton, 22 January, 43 Edward III.
Spellesbury. He held no lands &c. in the county because long before his death he enfeoffed John de Bukyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, and others, of the manor of Spellesbury, which he held of the bishop of Worcester.
BERKS. Inq. made at Neubury, 21 January, 43 Edward III.
Compton Bechaump. The advowson of the church, tenure not known.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 13 November last. Thomas his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.
WILTS. Inq. made at Salisbury, 12 January, 43 Edward III.
Chiriel. The manor, held for his life of the king in chief by knight’s service by reason of a gift thereof made by John de Melbourne and Roger de Ledebury, clerks, by a fine levied in the king’s court, to him and Guy his son and the heirs male of the latter, with remainder to Thomas the latter’s brother and the heirs male of his body.
Wodebergh. A moiety of a knight’s fee, with the advowson of the church, held for his life of the king in chief by knight’s service by reason of a gift thereof made by John de Bukyngham, Ralph Basset of Sapecote, Richard de Puriton and others to him and Thomas his son and the heirs male of the body of the latter.
Stratford Tony. The manor, held of the earl of Leycestre.
Newenton Tony. The manor, held of the earl of Hereford.
Long before his death he enfeoffed John de Bukyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, John de Bello Campo, Ralph Basset of Sapecote and others of the two last-mentioned manors.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death as above. Heir as above by the form of the gift aforesaid, because Guy died without heir male of himself.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Barnard Castle, 11 December, 43 Edward III.
Barnard Castle and the manor of Gaynford. He held the said castle and manor for life by a grant which John de Melburn and Roger de Ledbur’, clerks, made thereof, by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the octave of Holy Trinity, 18 Edward III, to him and Guy his son and the heirs male of the body of the latter, with remainder to Thomas brother of Guy and the heirs male of his body. The premises are held of the king by a whole barony. Guy died without heir male of his body.
Date of death as above. The said Thomas brother of Guy, aged 28 years and more, is the earl’s heir.

LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 4 December, 43 Edward III.
Eldeneslane. He was formerly seised of a messuage with a garden and shops adjacent in Eldeneslane, but long before his death he enfeoffed John de Bokyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, Ralph Basset of Sapecote, Richard de Piryton and others thereof by a charter dated 15 July, 35 Edward III, and afterwards, by his writing enrolled on the dorse of the Close Roll (clause) of the king’s Chancery in August, 43 Edward III, he released for himself and his heirs all his right in the premises to the same feoffees, with a clause of warranty.
He died on Tuesday the feast of St. Brice the Bishop last, holding no lands &c. in the city or suburbs. Thomas Beauchaump, knight, his son, aged 28 years and more, is his heir.

SURREY. Inq. (indented) taken at Leddred, 7 December, 43 Edward III.
Craneleye. The advowson of the church, held of the king for life, by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in three weeks of Michaelmas, 35 Edward III, between the earl, querent, and John de Bokyngham, Ralph Basset of Sapcote, Richard de Pyrington and others, deforciants, with remainder to Thomas his son and the heirs male of his body.
Asshstede and Neudegate. The manor. He was once seised thereof, but by his charter dated at Warwick, 15 July, 35 Edward III, he enfeoffed John de Bokyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, Robert de Herle, Richard de Piriton and others thereof, and afterwards, by his writing enrolled on the dorse of the Close Roll of the king’s Chancery in August, 43 Edward III, released all his right therein to the above feoffees, with a clause of warranty. The manor is held of the earl of Arundel by service of rendering 1 mark yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

KENT. Inq. (indented) taken at Canterbury, 16 December, 43 Edward III.
Esehole. The manor. He was once seised thereof, but by charter he enfeoffed John de Bokyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, Robert de Herle, now deceased, Richard de Pyryton and others thereof, and afterwards by his writing released to them all his right therein. The manor is held of the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

Kertelynge. The manor, held for life by grant of John de Meldeburne and Roger de Ledbur’, clerks, made by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the octave of Trinity, 18 Edward III, to him and Guy his son and the heirs male of the body of the latter, with remainder to Thomas brother of Guy and the heirs male of his body. Guy died without heir male &c. The manor is held of the king in chief by serjeanty.
Whitlesforde and Bryngele. The advowsons of the churches, which are appurtenant to the said manor of Kertelynge, held in form aforesaid.
Long Stanton. A rent of 10 marks issuing from a manor called Tonyesfee, held for life by grant of John de Buk’, now bishop of Lincoln, John de Bello Campo and others, by a fine levied in the king’s court in three weeks of Michaelmas, 35 Edward III, with remainder to Thomas his son and the heirs male of his body. The rent is held of the king, service not known.

Hamslape and Querendon. The manors, held for life by grant of John de Melbourne and Roger de Ledbur’, clerks, made by a fine as above, to him and Katharine his wife, now deceased, for their lives, with remainders as above. Guy died without heir male of his body. The manors of Hamslape and Querendon are held of the king in chief, services not known. The manor of Hamslape and Castelthrop is worth 60l, yearly; and the manor of Querendon 54l. 2s.
He died on 3 November last. Heir as above.
Schedule annexed: The jurors also say that the earl held for life the offices of chamberlain and usher in the king’s Exchequer, with the appurtenances in the county of Buckingham, by grant of John de Bukyngham, Ralph Basset of Sapcote and others by a fine levied in the king’s court in three weeks of Michaelmas, 35 Edward III, with remainder to Thomas his son and the heirs male of his body.

Upton Waryn. The advowson of the church, held of the king in chief, service not known.
Worcester. The castle and shrievalty with the hundreds and members, and the manors of Elmeleye Lovet, Synteley, Abbedeley and Yerdeleye, and a moiety of a knight’s fee in Rydmarleye, held for his life of the king in chief by knight’s service by grant of John de Bokyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, and others, by a fine levied in the king’s court in 35 Edward III, with remainder to Thomas his son and the heirs male of his body.
Shraueley. The manor, held for his life of the king in chief by knight’s service by grant of John de Melborne and Roger de Ledbury made by a fine levied in the king’s court in 18 Edward III to him and Katharine his wife, deceased, for their lives, with successive remainders in tail male to Guy his son, now deceased, and Thomas brother of Guy, who survives.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Wednesday after St. Martin in this year. Heir as above.

Poterespirie. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Totebury, for life, services not known, by grant of John de Melbourne and Roger de Ledbur’, clerks, to him and Katharine his wife by a fine levied in the king’s court in 18 Edward III, with successive remainders as last above. Guy died without heir male of his body, and Katharine is now dead.
The earl died at Caleis on 13 November last. Heir as above.
RUTLAND. Inq. (indented) taken at Berghdon, 10 December, 43 Edward III.

Held of the king in chief for life, services not known, by grant of John de Melborne and Roger Ledbur’, clerks, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Trinity, 18 Edward III, with remainder to Reinbrun his son, now deceased, for life, and with further successive remainders in tail male to Guy brother of Reinbrun and Thomas brother of Guy. Guy is dead without heir male.
He held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Notyngh’, Saturday after the Epiphany, 43 Edward III.
Gunthorp. Peter de Monte Forti, knight, holds the manor of Gunthorp for life of the earl’s inheritance by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the octave of Hilary, 23 Edward III, between Guy de Monte Forti, now deceased, and Margaret his wife, now a professed nun, querents, and Richard de Budefford and Thomas de Compton, chaplains, Walter de Herefford and John Cullecuppe of Fosshawe, deforciants, whereby the deforciants granted the reversion of the manor after Peter’s death to the said Guy and Margaret and the heirs of the body of Guy, with remainder to Thomas de Bello Campo, earl of Warwick, and Katharine his wife, both now deceased, and the heirs of the said earl. The reversion of the manor after the death of Peter de Monte Forti belongs by the fine to Thomas the earl’s son and heir.

Westacre. The advowson of the priory.
Philippa, who was the wife of Sir Guy de Bello Campo, the earl’s son, holds the above by gift of the earl to Guy and Philippa and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to the earl and his heirs. Guy and Philippa had two daughters, Elizabeth and Katharine. Elizabeth died lately without heir of herself, and Katharine took the veil at Shouldham, where she is professed, without heir of herself. The said Guy died lately, and Philippa now holds the premises, the reversion belonging to Thomas de Bello Campo, knight, the earl’s son and heir.
Shouldham. The advowson of the priory, held by the earl for life by a fine levied in the king’s court in 35 Edward III, whereby John de Bukyngham, Richard de Piriton and others, deforciants, granted the same to the earl for life, with remainder to Thomas de Bello Campo, the earl’s son, and the heirs male of his body.

Flamstede. The manor, held for life by grant of John de Melbourne and Roger de Ledbur’, clerks, to him and Guy his son and the heirs male of the body of the latter by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Trinity, 18 Edward III, with remainder to Thomas brother of Guy and the heirs male of his body. Guy has now died without heir male &c. The manor is held of the king in chief, by what service the jurors know not.
The earl died on the feast of St. Brice last. Thomas his son, aged 32 years and more, is his heir.

Welcomstowe. The manor, held for life (as the manor of Flamstede above).
Welcomstowe Bedyk. The earl acquired the reversion of the said manor, which Maud late the wife of Simon Franceys holds for life, and by a fine levied in three weeks of Michaelmas, 35 Edward III, enfeoffed John de Bukhyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, John de Beuchamp and others thereof, on condition that, having had possession and seisin thereof, and the attornment of the said Maud, they should grant the same to him for life, with remainder to Thomas his son and the heirs male of his body, to hold of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed, but by what service the jurors know not.

Wolfhamcote. The advowson of the church, lately purchased by the earl and Thomas his son from John Trillowe, the younger, and Joan his wife, to hold to them and the heirs of Thomas.

Henleye, Whitcherch, Ilmyndon and Wellesborn Mountford. The manors.
Peter de Monte Forti, knight, holds the said castle and manors for life, of the earl’s inheritance, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Hilary, 23 Edward III, whereby Richard de Budeford, chaplain, Thomas de Compton, chaplain, Walter de Hereford, and John Collecoppe of Foschawe granted the reversion of the said castle and manors after the death of Peter to Guy de Monte Forti, now deceased, and Margaret his wife, now a professed nun, and the heirs of the body of Guy, with remainder to the earl and Katharine his wife, now deceased, and the earl’s heirs. By a fine levied in the king’s court in three weeks of Michaelmas, 35 Edward III, the earl granted his reversion of the castle and manor of Beaudesert and the manors of Whitchirch and Wellesburn to John de Bukyngham, Ralph Basset of Sapecote and others, who granted the same to him for life, with remainder to Thomas his son and the heirs male of his body, to hold of the king &c. by the services &c. By his charter and release enrolled on the dorse of the Close Roll in August, 43 Edward III, the earl granted the reversion of the manors of Henleye in Arderne, held of the earl of Stafford, and Ilmyndon, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the fee of Leicester, to John de Bukyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, John de Bello Campo, Ralph Basset and others.
Budbrok and La Grave. The manors (extents given), held by gift of John de Hastang, knight, to the earl and the heirs male of his body. They are held of John de Clynton of Maxstok, services not known.
Hasele. The manor, held of the heirs of John de Hastang in socage.
Asshorne. The manor, held of the fee of Leicester.
The earl, by his charter dated at Warwick, 15 July, 35 Edward III, enfeoffed John de Bukyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, Ralph Basset of Sapecote and others of the last two manors, and afterwards released them to the same persons by his writing enrolled on the dorse of the Close Roll in August, 43 Edward III.
LEICESTER. Inq. taken at Leicester, Thursday after Christmas, 43 Edward III.
Kybbeworth. The manor, held by Philippa late the wife of Guy de Bello Campo, son of the earl, by gift of the said earl to him and Philippa and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to the earl and his heirs, to hold of the king. Guy and Philippa had two daughters, Elizabeth and Katharine. Elizabeth is dead without heir of herself; Katharine took the veil and was professed at Sholdham without heir of herself; and Guy is dead. So that after Philippa’s death the manor belongs to Thomas de Bello Campo, knight, the earl’s son, aged 28 years and more, and his heirs.
The earl died on 13 November last.

Wyckewan, Lydeneye, and Cheddeworth. The manors (extents given), and the advowson of the church of Nategrave, held for life of the king in chief by knight’s service by grant of John de Bokyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, John de Bello Campo and others, by a fine levied in the king’s court in 35 Edward III, with remainder to Thomas the earl’s son and the heirs male of his body.
The earl died on Tuesday after St. Martin last. Heir as above, aged 24 years and more.
HEREFORD AND THE MARCH OF WALES ADJACENT. Inq. (indented) taken at Hereford, 15 December, 43 Edward III.
Painscastle (Castrum Matill’). The castle, and the manor of Elvel (extent given), held by grant of John de Melbourne and Roger de Ledbury, clerks, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Trinity, 18 Edward III, to the earl and Guy his son and the heirs male of the body of the latter, with remainder to Thomas brother of Guy and the heirs male of his body, to hold of the king and his heirs by knight’s service. Guy is now dead without heir male of his body. The extent includes 10 marks rent from the burgesses of the town of the said castle, three forests, to wit, the new forest, the old forest and Richard’s forest, a forest called ‘Colewent,’ a court held sometimes monthly and sometimes every three weeks, a hundred court held every three weeks, a custom called ‘Kylfmayr,’ a custom called ‘Coweyeld’ every third year, and two fairs held on the eve of St. Barnabas and the eve of SS. Simon and Jude.
Abbredewe. The manor (extent given), held by grant of John de Bokyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, John de Beauchampe and others, by a fine levied in the king’s court in 35 Edward III, to the earl for life, with remainder to Thomas his son and the heirs male of his body. The extent includes a pasture called ‘Hamme,’ a court held every month, and a custom called ‘Guaber.’ He held the manor of the king in chief by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee.
Sweyneseye and Oystremouth. The castles, and the land of Gower (extent given), held by grant of Ralph earl of Stafford, Robert Herle and Richard de Pyryton, by a fine levied in the king’s court in 30 Edward III, to the earl and Katharine his wife for life, with remainders to Guy the earl’s son and the heirs male of his body and to Thomas brother of Guy and the heirs male of his body. The said Guy died without heir male of his body. The extent of Sweyneseye includes 13l. rents from the burgesses of the town, a court held every fortnight, a court called pleas of piepowder (placita de pede pulverisato), 40l. rents of English tenants, both free and bond, and an English county court held every month.
Kylveye. The manor (extent given), held as the manor of Abbredewe above. The extent includes a court held every month, divers weirs of the river Tawy, a pit of sea-coals, a county court of the Welshry (comitatus Walsshrie) held every month, 40l. rent in the upper wood (in suprabosco) of Gower, and pasture worth 10 marks yearly of the forest aforesaid of the upper wood.
Lanymore. (fn. 1) A carucate of land, two-thirds of a watermill, and a court held every month.
Pennarth. (fn. 1) A carucate of land, 20 marks rent, and a court held every month.
Lougherne. (fn. 1) 8 marks rent, a hundred court held twice a year, two forests, to wit, Clune and Kylveye, and the park of Bruse.
Sweyneseye. Two fairs, one on the feast of the Assumption and the other on the feast of St. Martin.
Knythall and Rosselly. (fn. 1) 100s. rent.
Pennarth. A mill.
Blakepulle. (fn. 1) A mill.
The aforesaid castles and the land of Gower with all the aforesaid parcels are held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

Brabourne. The manor, held jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs, by gift of Nicholas Damory, knight, and John de Lenne, clerk, made with the king’s licence. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.
He died on 10 October last. Elizabeth and Philippa, his daughters, of whom Elizabeth was 7 years of age on 1 March and Philippa was 6 years of age on 21 March last, are his heirs.

Possewyk. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.

He held both the above manors jointly with Elizabeth his wife, to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs, by gift of William de Edyngton, bishop of Winchester, and David Wollore, clerk, made with the king’s licence.
Styvekeye. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. He held it jointly with Elizabeth his wife, in form aforesaid, by gift of Nicholas Damory, knight, and John de Lenne, clerk, made with the king’s licence.
Holkham. The manor, held of the heir of Robert de Cateshale by service of half a knight’s fee. He held it jointly with Elizabeth his wife, in form aforesaid, by gift of Nicholas Dammori, Elizabeth de Burgo, lady of Clare, and John de Lenne, clerk.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Gaynesburgh, Thursday the feast of St. Nicholas the Bishop, 43 Edward III.
Gaynesburgh. The manor, held jointly with Elizabeth his wife, to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs, of the heirs of John de Moubray, minors in the king’s wardship, by services of two knights’ fees.
He died on Wednesday before St. Edward the Confessor, 43 Edward III. His daughters Elizabeth, aged 7 years on Tuesday after the Conversion of St. Paul in the same year, and Philippa, aged 6 years on Wednesday after the Annunciation in the same year, are his heirs.

Mitford. The manor and castle (extent given), with the members thereof, to wit, two-thirds of the manor of Ponteland, Little Eland, Callerton Valence and the town of Merdisfen (extents given), held of the king in chief by service of two knights’ fees and by rendering 31s. 4d. yearly for cornage. The extent of Mitford includes a rent of 6s. 8d. called ‘Ekemale,’ free tenants at Framlyngton rendering 6s. 8d. yearly for ward of the castle, free tenants of the town of Estaldworth rendering the same, and free tenants rendering 12d. yearly for ward of the same castle for Northmilburn and [? a moiety] of the town of Bechefeld. The extent of Ponteland includes a small park.
Mollesdon. On Tuesday before Easter, 43 Edward III, at Neutonhall, the earl enfeoffed John de Mitford of all his lands &c. in the town of Mollesdon, to hold to him and the heirs male of his body by service of 6d. yearly to the earl and his heirs, with reversion in default of male heirs to the earl and his heirs. The lands &c. consist of a messuage, 11 waste tofts, 200a. land which have lain uncultivated since the distraint of Gilbert de Middelton, and 5a. meadow.
Mitford. The earl also enfeoffed the said John on the same date of 4a. meadow in the fields of Mitford called ‘le Hall Dene’; and on Monday after All Saints, 42 Edward III, he enfeoffed him of 30a. land called ‘Castell lond’ and ‘Ineshaulgh (?), to hold to him and his heirs at fee-farm, without the king’s licence.
The lands in Mollesdon and the 4a. meadow and 30a. land in the fields of Mitford are parcel of the castle and manor of Mitford, to wit, a fortieth part of a knight’s fee.
The earl held no other lands &c. in the county.

LIBERTY OF TYNDALE. Inq. taken at Werk in Tyndale, Friday after St. Hilary, 43 Edward III.
Thornton in Tyndale. A moiety of the site of the manor, 160a. land, and two-thirds of a watermill, parcel of the said manor, held in demesne jointly with Elizabeth his wife, to them and the heirs male of his body, with remainder to his right heirs.
He was also seised in form aforesaid of the following, which are parcels of the said manor, to wit:—
Neuburgh in Tyndale. A free farm of 4l. 4d. from divers burgage tenements in the town.
Bowes and le Belles. A hope so called.
Keldrebays. Tenements so called.
Half Keldre, Tenements so called.
Waynhop Syde. Tenements so called, with a park called Waynhop Park.
Peltreuerot. Tenements so called.
Hemilhop. A moiety thereof.
Long ago the earl demised the last six parcels to Alan del Strothre and his heirs for 11 years, of which 5 are unexpired.
All the premises are held of the king in chief, as of the manor of Werk in Tyndale, by service of a thirtieth part of a barony and by suit to the court of Werk in Tyndale every three weeks.
The earl held no other lands &c. in the liberty.
He died on 10 October last without heir male of his body. Heirs as above.
