85. CECILY DE CRUKERN, ONE OF THE KINSWOMEN AND HEIRS OF CECILY LATE THE WIFE OF STEPHEN LAUNDY.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Cecily, on the petition of John de Crukern, who has married her. 8 February, 40 Edward III.
DORSET. Proof of age taken at Bemynstre, 26 February, 40 Edward III.
John Bouwode, aged 50 years and more, says that she was of full age, to wit 15 years, on the Nativity of the Blessed Mary last, having been born at Childehey and baptized in the church of Brodewyndesore in 24 Edward III; and he remembers this because on the day of the baptism he held a court at Brodewyndesore in the presence of Hugh Strode, aged 44 years, James Hournesbawe, aged 41 years, Roger Lopene, aged 49 years, Roger Rouche, aged 55 years, and Geoffrey Broun, aged 43 years, who, having been sworn, agree with John Bouwode in all particulars. So by the date of the court the age of the heir is known.
Peter Gust, aged 44 years, Nicholas Wike, aged 43 years, Thomas Bouchard, aged 48 years, and Thomas Elwell, aged 42 years, agree and say that on the day of the baptism they came to Brodewyndesore at the request of the steward of the earl of Devon to witness and bear record to a demise of land between the earl and Richard Childehey, father of the said Cecily. They know her age by the date of the writing.
William de Legh, aged 41 years, and John Broun, aged 43 years and more, agree and say that they were asked by Richard Childehey to a feast (conviviolum) on the day of the baptism, and he gave each of them a rod of alder at Childehey to witness and bear record to the age of the said Cecily.

86. JOHN SON AND HEIR OF JOHN PAYNEL, knight.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said John, the lands of whose inheritance are in the custody of Thomas de Botheby. 20 May, 40 Edward III.
Endorsed: The proof of age attached hereto was made in the presence of Thomas de Botheby, lawfully warned by Robert Morant and Richard de Dunsthorp.
LINCOLN. Proof of age taken at Grantham, Saturday after St. Barnabas, 40 Edward III.
Robert Gaunt of Barkeston, aged 40 years and more, and John Fox of Humby, aged 50 years and more, say that the said heir was 21 years of age on Saturday after SS. Philip and James last, having been born at Botheby by Billesfeld on 2 May, 1345, and baptized in the church of St. Andrew there; and this they know because they were present in the church at the time and saw Richard Pynzun, then parson of the church, and John de Cranwell, godfathers of the said heir, lifting him from the sacred font.
John Page of Reppesle, aged 60 years and more, and John de Barkeworth, aged 50 years and more, agree and say that at the time of the birth they were at Botheby about the carriage of their timber in the wood of Botheby, which they had bought of John Paynell, the heir’s father.
Edmund Kyrnell of Botheby, aged 40 years and more, Adam Forster of the same, aged 50 years and more, John Dryver of the same, aged 40 years and more, James Haket, aged 40 years and more, Robert son of Roger of the same, aged 44 years and more, William Telle of the same, aged 57 years and more, and William Bocher of the same, aged 53 years and more, agree and say that continuously since the birth until now they have dwelt in the town of Botheby and have often seen the note of the day and year of the birth written in the kalendar of the great white psalter of the church by Richard Pynzon, then parson, to wit the second of May in the aforesaid year; and moreover William Kyrnell of Botheby, brother of the said Edmund Kyrnell, is of the same age as the heir, and was born on the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross after his birth.
Geoffrey Kebet of Humby, aged 44 years and more, agrees and says that at the feast of St. John before the Latin Gate next after the birth of the heir he came from Byngham ‘in the Vale,’ where he had previously dwelt, to Humby by Botheby, and took a dwelling there and has lived there until now.

87. ROBERT SON AND HEIR OF ROBERT BURDET, knight.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said heir, whose father held of the heir of Maud de Holland, tenant in chief, by knight’s service. The lands of his inheritance are in the custody of John de Charnels, clerk, by the king’s commitment. 26 October, 40 Edward III.
Endorsed: The escheator caused John de Charnels to be warned by John de Cateby and Simon de Kerby to be before him at Pollusworth, and, as he did not appear, executed the writ in his absence.
WARWICK. Proof of age (indented) taken at Pollusworth, 5 November, 40 Edward III.
John le Clerk, aged 42 years, says that the said heir was born at Sekynton and baptized in the church of All Saints there about the feast of SS. Simon and Jude, to wit, on 26 October, 19 Edward III; and this he knows because he had a son named Walter born and baptized in the said church in the same year, and he is now 21 years of age and more.
John Asshebrok, aged 46 years, agrees and says that he was at the time in the service of the heir’s father and was charged with (super) divers letters into the counties of Wilts, Stafford, Northampton and Leicester to divers of the father’s friends (complicibus et amicis) for joy (pre leticia) of the birth of the said heir.
Richard le Warde, aged 50 years, agrees and says that in the same year he acquired an acre of land from a neighbour about the feast of St. Nicholas the Bishop.
Robert le Smyth, aged 42 years, agrees and says that he was by reason of his minority in the wardship of the father of the said Robert Burdet, of whom he then held by homage, and it happened that his age was proved about the feast of St. Andrew next after the birth, and as he is now 42 years of age he knows that the heir is of full age.
John Balle, aged 44 years, agrees and says that about the feast of the Purification last 21 years ago he married Isabel his wife, who is still alive.
John Mokke, aged 46 years, agrees and says that he was with a certain priest ob causam adiscendi in the church aforesaid when the said Robert was baptized, so that, counting up the years spent in divers dwellings, he is sure that the heir is of full age (per quod computatis singulis annis hucusque per diversas moras suas constat sibi ad plenum quod plene etatis est).
Walter son of Richard, aged 48 years, agrees and says that in the same year, in the summer following, he was in a quarrel (contumelia) there where he was grievously wounded.
Richard Adam, aged 60 years, agrees and says that he was on pilgrimage to Santiago about the feast of St. Gregory the Pope after the birth, and suddenly fell sick with fever and so remained weak for a long time after.
William Hichebon, aged 45 years, agrees and says that his firstborn son died on the feast of St. Katharine after the birth.
John Lambard, aged 42 years, agrees and says that his mother was helping the mother of the said Robert at the time, and he, John, was then 21 years of age.
John de Kent, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he was serving a man in the county of Oxford, and on his return home he found his wife at church with Robert’s mother making offerings on the day of her churching, and because she was away on his arrival he beat her so that she feared for her life (mortem timuit).
Henry Russell, aged 52 years, agrees and says that his father was a collector of the king’s fifteenth in the town of Sekynton, and because he asked the heir’s father for the fifteenth at which he was assessed he was threatened in life and limbs so that he dared not approach his house; and so by his rolls of the fifteenth and their date he knows that the heir was of full age at the time above stated.

88. JOHN SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE BURGHERSSH.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said John, who is also kinsman and one of the heirs of Edmund Bacoun. The lands of his inheritance are in the custody of John de Mohun and Joan his wife by the king’s commitment. 20 October, 40 Edward III.
OXFORD. Proof of age made at Ewelme, 14 November, 40 Edward III.
John atte Wyle, aged 50 years, says that the said heir was 23 years of age on Saturday the eve of All Saints last, having been born at Ewelme on Monday the feast of St. Michael, 17 Edward III, and baptized on the morrow in the church of All Saints there, and that John Grene, William Lecch and Alice Fifide lifted him from the sacred font; and this he knows because he had a firstborn son named William by his wife, who died in the same year, and his death was written in the missal of the church for a perpetual remembrance.
Henry Pangebourne, aged 60 years, agrees and says that at that time in the same year he had by his wife a son William, who is still alive and 23 years of age.
Thomas Crouk, aged 56 years, agrees and says that his mother, Juliana Fabyan, died in the same year, 17 Edward III, and her death is written in the missal of the same church.
John Beek, aged 60 years, agrees and says that on the day of the birth he went hunting with the heir’s father, and at a certain leap he broke his leg and has ever since walked lame.
Eustace Roser, aged 50 years, William Wayte, aged 56 years, Philip Grenefeld, aged 53 years, Walter Fairman, aged 54 years, William Motte, aged 50 years, Richard Smyth, aged 56 years, and Henry Houstwey, aged 56 years, agree and say that on the day of the birth they started (irripuerunt) with other neighbours of the countryside for Santiago, and the day on which they started is enrolled in the missal of the same church, and it is now 23 years ago.
William Runsyval (age not stated) agrees and says that Pernell, his daughter, died on the morrow of the day of the heir’s birth, and the day of her death was written in the psalter of the same church.
The escheator caused John de Mohun and Joan his wife to be warned by Richard Wylot and John atte Dich to be at Ewelme on 14 November, and Ralph Restwold and Patrick Everard, their attorneys, were there and said nothing.

89. JOHN SON AND HEIR OF RALPH DE FRENYNGHAM, knight.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said John. 28 November, 40 Edward III.
KENT. Proof of age (indented) made at Maydestane, 20 January, 40 Edward III.
John Mayster, aged 51 years, says that the said heir was 21 years of age on the feast of St. Stephen last, 21 (sic) Edward III, having been born at Estfarlegh and baptized in the church of St. Andrew there, and that William Apuldriffeld and John Coppyng, with Joan de Cobbeham of Rundale, lifted him from the sacred font; and this he knows because John his son was born on the feast of St. Mary Magdalene 21 years ago, after the birth of the said heir.
Walter Grige, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that Henry Grige, his father, gave him and John his brother 2a. land in the parish of Beringdenne, and by the charter of feoffment and the date of the same, to wit, at Bedyngdenne on the day of St. Thomas the Martyr 21 years ago, next after the birth of the heir, he remembers the said birth.
John Rogger, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he acquired 1 1/2a. land in the parish of Maydestane by Estfarlegh in a place called ‘Lodlyngcrouche,’ and by the date of the charter of feoffment made at Maydestane on the morrow of the birth of the heir he remembers the said birth.
John Baber, aged 45 years, Richard Pattemell, aged 51 years, Thomas atte Halle, aged 43 years, and John Maryon, aged 43 years, agree and say that John Pattemell built a water-mill in Maydestane called ‘Pattemell’ by Estfarlegh in the year in which the heir was born, and that is 21 years ago.
Thomas Smyth, aged 43 years, agrees and says that John de Frenyngham, father of the said Ralph de Frenyngham, died nineteen years ago, and at that time John son of Ralph was 3 years old and more.
Ralph Coteler, aged 45 years and more, agrees and says that William his son became a monk at Rochester three years before the birth of the heir, now 28 (sic) years ago.
Thomas Bouutefloure, aged 41 years, and Thomas Jacop, aged 43 years, agree and say that together they built a chamber at Lyntton eight days after the birth of the heir.
John Fayhard, aged 45 years, agrees and says that he had a wife named Alice, who died 19 years ago, and her death is enrolled in the missal of Maydestane, and the heir was then two years old and more.

90. THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF WALTER FAUCOMBERGE.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, the lands of whose inheritance are in the custody of Isabel, late the wife of the said Walter, and Roger de Fulthorp, by demise of Philippa queen of England, the king’s consort, to whom the king committed the same. 25 July, 40 Edward III.
Endorsed: William de Reygate, escheator, warned Isabel and Roger by Richard de Cotum and Thomas de Hoton to be present at this proof, and she and William de Lakenby, Roger’s attorney, were present and made no objection.
YORK. Proof of age taken at Uplithum, Wednesday the morrow of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 40 Edward III.
Roger Wirfauk, aged 60 years, says that the said heir was born at Uplithum on the feast of St. Margaret, 19 Edward III, and baptized in the church there, and was 21 years of age on the feast of St. Margaret last; and this he knows because he had a son John who died in the same week in which the heir was born, and that is 21 years ago and more.
John de Foulthorp, aged 56 years, agrees, adding that Thomas de Thwenge lifted the said heir from the sacred font, and says that he, John, was in the church on the day of the baptism and saw the heir baptized, and that is 21 years ago.
William de Lakenby, aged 46 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he had a daughter Alice born, who is now 21 years old and more.
Nicholas Rosele, aged 45 years, agrees and says that he had a daughter Joan born in the same month.
Thomas Eden, aged 50 years, had a son John born in the same month.
John de Boynton, aged 47 years, had a son Robert born in the same week as the heir.
William de Foulthorp, aged 60 years, had a daughter Agnes born in the same week.
William Wyles, aged 48 years, had a son Thomas born in the same month.
Robert Bayhous, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he was in the church on the day of the baptism.
William Kloket, aged 46 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he had a son Thomas born, who is now 21 years old and more.
John Capon, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he had a daughter Agnes born in the same month.
Adam del Dalhouse, aged 40 years, had a daughter Joan born in the same month.

91. RICHARD SON OF THOMAS CHAMBERNOUN.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Richard, who is kinsman and heir of Elizabeth late the wife of Robert Herle. The lands of his inheritance are in the king’s hand by the death of Robert Herle, who held them by the courtesy of England after the death of Elizabeth. 5 July, 40 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Proof of age (indented) made at Jevelchestre, 6 August, 40 Edward III.
William Welde, aged 56 years, William Persons, aged 50 years, John atte Lode, aged 47 years, Robert Logge, aged 55 years, and William Britz, aged 43 years and more, say that the said Richard is of full age, to wit 22 years, and was so on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul last, having been born at the manor of Suddon and baptized in the church of Wyncaulton on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul, 18 Edward III. This they know because Henry Pouwer, steward of Richard Lovel, held a court at Wyncaulton on the day of the baptism, at which they were present, and by the date of the court they know the age of Richard.
John Borewell, aged 41 years, Henry Peytevyn, aged 44 years, Peter Dacton, aged 50 years, John Creys, aged 48 years, William Sotheray, aged 53 years, John de Lotesham, aged 45 years, and William Joce, aged 44 years and more, agree and say that Richard Lovel, knight, great-grandfather (proavus) and godfather of the said Richard, made a feast at la Mersch by Wyncaulton on the Sunday after the baptism, at which they were present at the invitation of the said Richard in order that they might bear witness and keep in mind the age of the said Richard.

Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Walter, who is also kinsman and heir of Joan late the wife of Robert Fitz Wauter. The lands of his inheritance are in the custody of Philippa queen of England, the king’s consort …. 40 Edward III.
Endorsed: The escheator gave notice to John atte Lee, the queen’s steward, to be at Henham on Friday before St. Luke, and he made no objection to the proof of age.
ESSEX. Proof of age taken at Henham, Friday before St. Luke, 40 Edward III.
Richard de Aungre, aged 44 years and more, says that the said Walter was born at Henham and baptized in the font of the church of St. Mary there on Monday the feast of St. Petronilla the Virgin, to wit, the last day of May, 19 Edward III, and was 21 years of age on the feast of St. Petronilla last. He knows this because at Easter before the birth his father Robert died.
Thomas Brodok, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that at the feast of the Annunciation before the birth he started for the Holy Land.
Richard Lekes, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that about Christmas before the birth his son Robert was drowned in the sea.
John Wydyton, aged 49 years and more, agrees and says that about the feast of St. James after the birth he married Katharine his wife.
John le Clerk, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that about the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist after the birth he purchased a manor in Denton.
Laurence Bledelowe, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that about the feast of the Purification before the birth he started for Santiago.
John Sperke, aged 47 years and more, agrees and says that about Easter before the birth his son Nicholas was born.
John Bolt, aged 43 years and more, agrees and says that about the feast of the Annunciation before the birth he built (de novo construxit) a hall.
Robert Parker, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that about the feast of St. Margaret before the birth his wife Isabel died.
William Boteler, aged 62 years and more, agrees and says that about Christmas before the birth he built (de novo construxit) the church of Westle.
Geoffrey Wilwys, aged 45 years and more, agrees and says that about Michaelmas after the birth his grange of Aysshedon was full of corn.
John Joude, aged 55 years, agrees and says that about the feast of St. Peter’s Chains after the birth he was despoiled by robbers of all his goods.

93. THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE LEGHE.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, whose father held of the king by knight’s service as of the honor of Pontefract, which was lately in the king’s hand by reason of the death of Henry duke of Lancaster. The lands of his inheritance are in the custody of Robert de Swylyngton by the king’s commitment. 3 October, 40 Edward III.
Endorsed: The escheator caused Robert de Swylyngton, knight, to be warned by Robert Porter and William de Tonge, but he did not trouble to be present or to send any one in his place.

William de Preston, aged 56 years, says that the said heir was born at Middelton on Wednesday before Whitsunday, 19 Edward III, and baptized on the same day in the church of Rothewell, and was 21 years of age on Wednesday before Whitsunday last. He knows this because in the same month in which the said heir was born he had a son Roger born, who is now 21 years old and more.
Adam de Meslay, aged 54 years, agrees and says that he was in the church and saw the heir baptized.
Thomas Newel, aged 48 years, agrees and says that in the same week in which the heir was born he sold a little wood of his to Richard de Ermelay of Ledes, and that was 21 years ago and more.
John de Hiprom, aged 52 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he had a brother, William by name, who was with the said John de Leghe, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Robert Hunt, aged 50 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he had a daughter Agnes born, who is now 21 years old and more.
John Gamel, aged 60 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he had a brother Robert, who went on pilgrimage to Santiago and died on his way home, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Thomas Culpun, aged 53 years, agrees and says that in the week of the birth he had a son John accidentally drowned in the river Ayre, and that was 21 years ago and more.
William Short, aged 51 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he married one Eva, and that was 21 years ago and more.
John Scorchebuf, aged 58 years, agrees and says that in the same month he had a son named John die, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Robert de Eure, aged 61 years, agrees and says that in the same month he had a daughter Alice born, who is now 21 years old and more.
Thomas de Maynyngham, aged 64 years, agrees and says that in the week of the birth he had a son named John made a monk in the priory of Monkebretton, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Thomas de Tiresale, aged 41 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he had a daughter Alice die, and that was 21 years ago and more.

Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, the lands of whose inheritance are in the custody of Joan late the wife of John Larcher of Yapum by the king’s commitment. 8 June, 40 Edward III.
Endorsed: The escheator warned the said Joan by John de London and John de Staneley of the county of York, and she was present at the proof of age and made no objection.
YORK. Proof of age taken at Pokelyngton, Saturday after the octave of Michaelmas, 40 Edward III.
Adam de Fenton, aged 56 years, says that the said heir was born at Bolton on Friday after the Assumption, 19 Edward III, and was baptized in the church of Yapum on the same day, and so was 21 years of age on Friday after the Assumption last. He knows this because in the month in which Thomas was born William de Cotum killed William de Mikelfeld at Pokelyngton, and that was 21 years ago and more.
William Renochesee, aged 52 years, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism he was in Yapum church and saw the heir baptized.
Ralph de Mikelfeld, aged 60 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he married one Eleanor, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Richard Veile, aged 56 years, agrees and says that in the same month he had three sons born of his wife, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Robert de Fenton, aged 40 years, agrees and says that in the same month he had a son John born, who is now 21 years old and more.
Richard Curtays, aged 41 years, agrees and says that in the week of the birth his father Thomas died, and that was 21 years ago and more.
John Bele, aged 45 years, agrees and says that in the same week Cecily his mother died, and that was 21 years ago and more.
John atte Essh, aged 44 years, agrees and says that in the month of the birth he had a son John born, who is now 21 years old and more.
Philip de Cotum, aged 48 years, agrees and says that in the same month he had a brother John die, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Ralph de Meltenby, aged 48 (?) years, agrees and says that in the same month he had a sister Alice die, and that was 21 years ago and more.
Robert Vyle, aged 43 years, agrees and says that in the same month he had a sister Joan made a nun in the priory of Nunburnholme (Brunnum), and that was 21 years ago and more.
John Kay, aged 47 years, agrees and says that in the week of the birth he had a brother William die, and that was 21 years ago.

95. DAVID ROBELYN, BROTHER AND HEIR OF ROBERT ROBELYN.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said David, whose brother Robert held of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, a minor in the king’s wardship. The lands of his inheritance are in the custody of the executors of the testament of Thomas Moigne. 5 May, 40 Edward III.
Endorsed: The escheator gave notice to the executors, but they were not present.
HEREFORD AND THE MARCH OF WALES. Proof of age made at Pembroke, 9 May, 40 Edward III.
John Melyn, aged 50 years, says that the said David was born at Costyneston on 1 August, 18 Edward III, and was baptized on the same day in the church of St. Michael there, and so was 21 years of age on 2 August last. David Elyot, William Parchecorn and Margaret Parchecorn lifted him from the sacred font. This the witness knows because on the day of the birth he acquired certain tenements in Costyneston from Walter atte More, and so by the charter of feoffment thereof made bearing date at Costyneston, 2 August, 18 Edward III, he remembers.
John Wydelock, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that he had a son named John who became a monk at the priory of Pembroke on the feast of St. James the Apostle next before the birth of David, in 18 Edward III; and it is so enrolled in a psalter at Costyneston.
John Castelmartyn, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that Alice his mother departed this life on 4 August next after the birth of the heir.
Peter Perot, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that he had a son Peter born on the morrow of St. Laurence next after the birth of the said heir, in 18 Edward III, and it is so enrolled in a missal in the church of Costyneston.
John Trewent, aged 38 years, John Scorlag, aged 50 years, William Benger, aged 48 years, and Walter Castel, aged 40 years and more, agree and say that there was a quarrel between them and Walter Malenfaunt, uncle of the heir, which was settled on 6 August after the birth of the heir, in 18 Edward III, and that was 21 years ago on 6 August last.
William White, aged 60 (?) years, William Br …., aged 54 years, William Parchecorne, aged 48 years, and Thomas Wysman, aged 46 years and more, agree and say that the church of Costyneston was interdicted or suspended, by reason of the shedding of blood in the same, from all divine celebrations therein except baptisms, at the time when the said heir was baptized, and was reconciled on the 7 August after his birth, 18 Edward III.
