NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Norwich, Thursday in the octave of the Purification, 37 Edward III.
Halvergate. Four pieces of marsh and pasture containing 980a., held for life by grant of Thomas de Brotherton, late earl of Norfolk, with reversion to the earl and his heirs. The premises are held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of the earldom of Norfolk, service not known. The escheator took the premises into the king’s hand immediately after the death of the deceased by a writ of diem clausit extremum, and by the inquisition taken thereon it was found that Margaret wife of Walter de Maunny, one of the daughters and heirs of the earl, and Elizabeth then wife of Walter de Ufford, Joan wife of William de Ufford, and Maud, daughters of Alice late the wife of Edward de Monte Acuto, the earl’s second daughter and heir, were next heirs to the premises. Elizabeth died without heir of her body at Michaelmas, 35 Edward III. Maud entered religion at Berkyng, co. Essex, and took the veil there and was professed at the feast of St. Margaret last without heir of her body. And so Margaret wife of Walter de Maunny and Joan wife of William de Ufford, aged respectively 40 years and more and 14 years and more, are the heirs. At the Nativity of St. John the Baptist after the death of the said Joan de Morle the king directed the escheator to make a partition between the heirs and deliver a moiety to Walter de Maunny and Margaret his wife, then of full age, retaining the other moiety in the king’s hand on account of the minority of Joan de Ufford. Walter de Maunny and the escheator have remained in possession of the premises until now, and the escheator has accounted yearly at the Exchequer for the profit he has received.
Joan de Morle died about the feast of the Purification, 34 Edward III.
