478. PETER ACHARD.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Peter, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 12 February, 37 Edward III.
GLOUCESTER AND THE MARCH OF WALES. Inq. taken at Magor, Thursday before St. Gregory, 37 Edward III.
Redewyk within the lordship of Magor. A messuage, a carucate of land and 20s. rent, held for life of the king in chief by knight’s service, of the right and inheritance of Cecily sometime his wife, because there was issue between them.
He died on Monday before St. Leonard, 36 Edward III. John Duyn son of Eleanor one of the sisters of the said Cecily, aged 24 years and more, and Joan daughter of Alice daughter of Amy her other sister, aged 7 years and more, are the heirs of Cecily to the aforesaid lands. The jurors do not know who is Peter’s heir.
The escheator has had possession of the premises since the death of the said Peter, and has received the issues to the king’s use, because the premises are held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

479. HENRY BASSET.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Henry and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 8 November, 37 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Lincoln, Monday after St. Katharine, 37 Edward III.
Hadyngton. A messuage and 2 bovates of land, held of the dean and chapter of Lincoln by service of 6d. yearly; a messuage and 2 bovates of land called ‘Prophetland,’ held of Thomas de Roos by service of 3s. 9d. yearly; and a messuage and 2 bovates of land called ‘Claypoleland,’ held of Gilbert de Umframvill, earl of Angos, by the foreign service. All the above he held for life, the reversion belonging to Roger Punchard and his heirs.
He died on Ascension day, 34 Edward III. Heir not known, but the jurors believe that the son of William Basset, knight, or the daughters of the same William, ages not known, are his heirs.
The aforesaid Roger Punchard has been in possession of the premises since Henry’s death.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Basyngstoke, 5 April, 37 Edward III (much stained with gall and partly illegible).
Pambere within the forest of Pambere. A messuage and 2 carucates of land, held of the king in chief by service of 22s. 4d. to be paid yearly at Winchester castle by the hands of the sheriff.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died in the month of October, 35 Edward III, in the county of Norfolk, on what day the jurors know not. Hildebrand brother of John Basset his father, aged 24 years, is his heir. He died without heir of his blood.

481. GILES BREAUNSON.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Giles, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 15 October, 37 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Malden, Monday before St. Martin, 37 Edward III.
Purle. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the bishop of Norwich by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and by paying to him 21d. every 30 weeks for ward of Norwich castle.
He died on Monday after All Saints, 17 Edward III. John Breaunsoun, son of John Breaunsoun the son of Robert his brother, aged 30 years, is his heir.
Margaret his wife was in possession of the premises for ten years after his death, because she held them jointly with him for the term of her life. After her death William Bateman, late bishop of Norwich, was in possession as chief lord until the lawful age of the aforesaid heir, after which the said heir had possession.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Oliver, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 20 April, 37 Edward III.
SURREY. Inq. (indented) taken at Kyngeston on Thames, 17 October, 37 Edward III.
Apse by Kyngeston. 24a. land, held of the king by service of 15 bushels of malt, oats, barley and rye for making ale, 2 1/2 bushels of rye for making bread, and a pig or 12d., for a certain alms to be distributed in the manor of Apse on All Souls day in every year for the souls of all the kings of England.
Apse. The manor, held of William Croyser, knight, as of his manor of Stoke, as of the right and inheritance of Elizabeth, wife of the said William, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and by rendering 26s. 8d. yearly to the said William, 14s. 2d. yearly and a day in autumn to the prior of St. Mary’s without Bysschoppesgate, London, 2s. at Michaelmas to the prior of Merton, 3s. yearly to the earl of Hereford at his manor of Walton, and 12d. to Sir John Brewes, knight.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on the last day of August, 35 Edward III. John Brocas his son, aged 13 years, is his heir.
William Croyser, knight, has had possession of the manor as chief lord since his death.

Writ, 4 December, 37 Edward III.
GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Gloucester, Monday after St. Hilary, 37 Edward III.
Colde Asshton. The manor, held of the bishop of Worcester by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 7 October last. James le Botiller her son, of full age, is her heir.
HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Kylpek, 22 December, 37 Edward III.
Tryvel. The park.
Great Brompton. 13s. 4d. rent of free tenants.
Both held of the king in chief by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee.
Hereford. The custody and office of forester of the king’s hey of Hereford, with a piece of pasture called ‘le Strode’ in the said hey, held of the king in chief by service of rendering yearly 2s. for the acorns (pessona) of the hey and 5s. for the piece of pasture.
Kylpek. The castle and manor, held of John Bromwych, knight, and Elizabeth his wife, as of the manor of Wormelowe, by knight’s service.

484. BARTHOLOMEW DE BURGHERSSH, the elder, knight.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Bartholomew, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 30 April, 37 Edward III.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Wyng, Thursday the feast of St. Margaret, 37 Edward III.
Styuecle. The manor, held for life of the inheritance of Hugh son and heir of Margaret late the wife of Ralph earl of Stafford, who is in the king’s wardship, by demise of Gilbert de Clare, late earl of Gloucester, who held the manor of the king in chief, except 2 crofts, 2 cottages and 2 1/2 virgates of land which are held of prince Edward, as of the honor of Walyngford, service not known.
He died on Wednesday before St. Peter’s Chains, 29 Edward III. The above-named heir was 21 years of age and more on Wednesday the feast of St. Andrew last.
The above-named Ralph earl of Stafford has been in possession of the manor by the king’s demise since the death of the said Bartholomew, rendering to the king 8l. yearly for farm.

485. HUMPHREY DE BOHUN, or BAUN, earl of Hereford and Essex.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said earl, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 26 January, 37 Edward III.
SURREY. Inq. taken at Kyngeston on Thames, 12 February, 37 Edward III.
Walleton on Thames. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service, for what part the jurors know not. The extent mentions a leet held after Michaelmas and perquisites of court worth 20s. yearly beyond the steward’s expenses.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 15 October, 35 Edward III. Humphrey le (sic) Baun is his kinsman and heir, and was 20 years of age on 24 March, 36 Edward III.
William abbot of Walden, Nicholas de Neuton, canon of Hereford, Thomas de Walmersford and Stephen atte Roche (fn. 1) have had possession of the manor since his death by the king’s grant.
MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Totynham, 18 February, 37 Edward III.
Enefeld. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. The extent mentions a park with deer, acreage unknown, and a leet held after Michaelmas.

Berewyk. 24a. arable and 12a. meadow, held for life of the king in chief by service of 22s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff.
He died on 2 November, 35 Edward III. John Roches, aged 30 years and more, son of Agnes one of his daughters, and Nicholas, aged 6 years and more, son of Joan his other daughter, are his heirs.
The reversion of the aforesaid land and meadow belongs to the king and his heirs.

487. ROBERT BERTRAM, knight.
Writ, 22 November, 37 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, 24 November, 37 Edward III.
He had no lands &c. in the city or suburbs.
He died on Tuesday before St. Clement, 37 Edward III. Ellen his daughter, aged 22 years, married to John de Hatfeld, citizen of London, is his heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Wednesday before the Conversion of St. Paul, 37 Edward III.
Chapington. A messuage and 17a. land, held of Robert de Staynhop by service of 1d. yearly and in the hands of tenants at will rendering 7s. yearly. They are in the bishop of Durham’s liberty of Bedelingtonschire.
Camboys. A messuage and 18a. land, held of Isabel de Denum by service of 2s. 6d. yearly and in the hands of tenants at will rendering 7s. They are within the bishop’s said liberty.
North Horslay. A moiety of a toft, held of the heir of William late baron of Greystok, a minor in the king’s wardship, by homage and fealty.
He held no other lands &c. in the county, or in the county of York or elsewhere in the escheator’s bailiwick.
Bothale. At one time he was seised of the castle and manor of Bothale with their members, and by charter dated Saturday the feast of St. Martin in the Winter last he granted them to Robert Tatman, parson of the church of Bothale, and John, parson of the church of Shepwash, with the king’s licence as the jury understand, and the said Robert and John are still seised thereof. The castle and manor are held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of three knights’ fees in barony (in baroniam) and by service of rendering to the king yearly for ward of the castle of Newcastle-upon-Tyne by the hands of the sheriff and for cornage 115s. The castle and manor are only worth 100 marks clear by reason of the late mortality in those parts.
He was also seised at one time of the advowson of the church of Bothale, held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Bothale, and gave it by his charter dated Sunday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 35 Edward III, to William de Nessefeld of Scotton and his heirs. William remained in peaceful seisin until the death of the said Robert; but whether he has the king’s charter of licence for the advowson the jurors know not.
The deceased by his writing dated 18 September, 22 Edward III, gave to the same William de Nessefeld a yearly rent of 40s. for his life and a suitable gown (robam) or 20s. at Christmas, and charged the same on all his lands &c. in Northumberland; and William was seised thereof till Robert’s death. Whether this grant was made with the king’s licence or not the jurors know not.
Date of death as above. Ellen his daughter, late the wife of Robert de Ogle, married to John de Hatfeld, aged 26 years, is his heir.
Annexed: Certificate of the escheator that Robert Tatman and John, parson of the church of Shepwassh, were enfeoffed by the deceased of the castle and manor of Bothale on condition that they should re-enfeoff the deceased and Blanche his wife thereof in a certain form; but the deceased died before this was done, so they are still seised of the said castle and manor in fee simple.

488. WILLIAM BOKELOND, or DE BOKELOND, of Sutton.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said William, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 26 January, 37 Edward III.
BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Bikeleswade, Wednesday the eve of the Purification, 37 Edward III.
Sutton. 9a. land and 2a. meadow, held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by knight’s service; and 12a. land and 1a. meadow, held of the lord de Latimer by service of suit of court twice a year.
He died on 21 September, 3[6] Edward III. Richard de Bokelond his brother, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.
Thomas Bellese … has received the issues as farmer for a term of years of the aforesaid William, since the latter’s death.

489. ALINA LATE THE WIFE OF EDWARD BURNEL, knight.
Writ, 24 May, 37 Edward II.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Aylsham, 3 June, 37 Edward III.
Riston. The manor, held of Thomas de Grey by service of rendering at the end of every twenty-four weeks 3s. 4d. for ward of Banyard castle.
Thirnyng. The manor, held of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service and by service of rendering 8s. 6d. yearly.
Both manors held for life by a fine levied in the king’s court, with remainders successively to John de Haudlo for life, and to Nicholas Burnel son of the said John deceased, and his heirs.
She died on Tuesday before St. Dunstan last. Heir not known at present.
Writ, 24 May, 37 Edward III.
WARWICK. Inq. (indented) taken at Budeford, 4 June, 37 Edward III.
Budeford and Brome. The manors (extent given, including a fishery and a broken down mill), held for life by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee of the king in chief, as of the king’s ancient demesne, of the inheritance of Edward Burnel, sometime her husband, with remainder to Nicholas Burnel son of John de Haudlo deceased, by a fine levied in the king’s court.
She died on 16 May last. Nicholas Burnel is 30 years of age and more. Edward le Spenser, aged 24 years and more, is her heir.
Writ, 24 May, 37 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Keynesham, 12 June, 37 Edward III.
Compton Daundo. A messuage, 50a. land, 14a. meadow several from the Purification until after the hay has been carried, 60a. wood and 46s. rent, held for life of the heir of Geoffrey Daundo by knight’s service, with reversion as last above.
She died on 16 May last. Heir not known, because she has no heir of her body.
Writ, 24 May, 37 Edward III.
WORCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Worcester, last day of May, 37 Edward III.
Sockeleye. The manor (extent given), held for life of the king in chief by service (sic), as of the king’s ancient demesne, by way of dower of the inheritance of Edward Burnel, her late husband, with remainder to Nicholas de Burnel son of John de Haulowe deceased, as above, who is 30 years of age and more.
Bischleye. A chief messuage with garden, a decayed windmill, a carucate of land, 10a. meadow, 8a. several pasture, 30s. 5d. rents of free tenants, 72s. 6d. rents of bondmen, and pleas &c. of court worth 6s. 8d. yearly, held for life of the king in chief by service, as of the king’s ancient demesne, by gift of Hugh le Despenser, with remainder to the said Hugh and his heirs. The premises ought to remain to Edward son of Edward le Despenser, kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, who is 26 years of age and more. (fn. 2)
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 16 May this year. The aforesaid Edward is her heir of the blood.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Sobbury, 10 June, 37 Edward III.
Sobbury. The manor (extent given), held for life of the king in chief by knight’s service by gift of Hugh le Despenser, with reversion to him and his heirs. The extent includes a borough in which there are fairs on the feasts of the Invention of the Holy Cross and the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. The reversion belongs to Edward le Despenser, kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, aged 30 years.
She died on 16 May last.

Little Rysyndon. The manor (extent given), held for life of the earl of Cornwall by knight’s service. The extent mentions that of the 12l. of rents 10l. are paid to the abbess of Godestowe.
She died on 16 May last. Edward Despenser is her heir. The reversion of the manor belongs to Nicholas Burnel son of John de Haudlo deceased, aged 30 years and more, by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court.

The latter has been in possession of a third part of the premises since the death of the said William; and William atte See of Grymesby had possession of another third part until Easter day, 36 Edward III, when he alienated it in fee to Richard atte See, who is now tenant; and William de Legburn had possession of the remaining third part for four years after the death, and then he alienated it to Robert Bret of Grymesby, chaplain, Robert de Fenby of Bradele and William son of Roger de Layceby, who now hold it in fee.

Chyntynge. A toft and 18a. land, held of the king in chief as parcel of a serjeanty which William de Northo and William Bouet held there, the whole serjeanty being held of the king in chief by service of finding two parts of a hobelar in the king’s war against Wales for forty days at their own costs, and by service of rendering 3s. 2d. yearly at the king’s castle of Pevenese.
Dichenyng. A messuage and 48a. land, held of the heir of William de Fyenes, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the manor of Hurst Mounceaux, by service of rendering 1/2lb. pepper yearly at the said manor. They are only worth 12s. yearly because they lie in the weald in the chace of Claris, and the greater part of them is uncultivated because wasted by the deer.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 20 January, 35 Edward III. Richard his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.
The said Richard was in possession of the premises until the escheator seized them into the king’s hand, and thenceforth the escheator ought to answer for the issues.

Parish of St. Olave, Old Jewry. She held nothing in fee in the city, but she held for life in this parish by way of dower a great tenement with a garden, 10s. rent from the tenement of William Fromond in the same parish, and 6d. rent or a pair of spurs from the Friars Preachers in the city. The reversion of the premises belongs to Walter son of John Fitz Wauter, who is also her heir and is 18 years of age. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city.

The extent includes a park with deer, 35s. 10d. every twenty-four weeks for ward of Baynard castle, levied on the foreign fees, and a leet held on Tuesday after Trinity Sunday. The bondmen and customary tenants ought to cut and bind all the lord’s corn of old tenure, but not of other lands acquired; and they shall have therefor 1bus. of peas for pottage (pot’), 7qrs. of wheat, 1 OX carcase, price 5s., 557 herrings, price 2s. 9d., 130 gallons of ale or cider (ciser’), price 5s. 5d., cheese price 18d. and salt price 1d.
Thurstonton. A third part of the manor (extent given, including a mill pond (stang’) and a leet), held of her own inheritance after the death of John de Multon, her father, of the duke of Lancaster by service of a seventh part of a knight’s fee and by service of 40d. yearly of rent for parcel of the manor, 20d. to Hugh de Glemesford, 2d. to John de Burgh, 2d. to the parson of Haukesdon, and 3d. to the abbot of St. Edmund’s.

It is held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Lancaster, by service of a third part of two parts of a knight’s fee, and by rendering yearly to the duke 2s. 2 1/2d. and a third part of 1/2d. for ward of Lancaster.
