SALOP. | Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, Saturday after St. Margaret, 34 Edward III. |
The premises are those concerning which it is returned in the inquisition that they are held of the king in chief by knight’s service. They are held of the prince, as of the principality of Wales, since the time before that principality came into the hand of King Edward, the king’s grandfather, by the rebellion of Llewelin, the last Welsh prince, and they were parcel of the principality. The service by which they are held of the prince is not known because before the conquest of Wales, to wit before 11 Edward I, they were in the hand of the aforesaid Llewelin, formerly prince of Wales, in demesne and had so been previously in the hands of other princes of Wales and were so at the time of the forfeiture of that prince, as parcel of the principality. Edward I gave them by charter to Roger de Mortuo Mari, ancestor of the deceased, and his heirs, but whether to hold of the king as of the crown or of the principality, the jury know not, nor by what services, for they have never seen the charter. | |
