434. ROBERT DE MAULEYE.
Writ, 30 April, 32 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at York, Thursday in Whitsun week, 32 Edward III.
Hexthorp and Balby. The manors held for life by demise of Peter de Malo Lacu the elder, deceased, who granted the reversion to John de Malo Lacu, to whom Robert has attorned.
Rosyngton. The manor, except the fishery and stew (stagno), held for life by demise of Peter de Malo Lacu the elder to him and Joan his wife, lately deceased, for their lives, the reversion being granted to John de Malo Lacu as above.
John de Malo Lacu, being seised of the reversions of the three manors, granted them to the aforesaid Peter de Malo Lacu the elder for life, with remainders successively to Peter de Malo Lacu ‘le quint,’ lately deceased, and Margaret his wife, who survives, and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of Peter de Malo Lacu the elder. Robert and Joan attorned to the last named in their lifetime.
The three manors are held of the king in chief as of the crown by homage and by service of an eighth part of two serjeanties, which serjeanties (serjeantie integre) are held of the king in chief by service of finding two men armed in the Welsh war at their own costs for forty days, if there be war in Wales.
He had no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 28 April last. Heir not known.

435. ROBERT DE COKERYNGTON.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Robert, who held by knight’s service of the heir of Adam de Welle, tenant in chief, a minor in the king’s wardship, and as to who has been in possession of his lands since his death. 20 April, 32 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Alford, Wednesday after the octave of Trinity, 32 Edward III.
Wytheryn. A toft, 10a. land and 5a. meadow held jointly with Hawise his wife, to them and the heirs of Robert, of the heir of Adam de Welle by knight’s service and by service of 6d. yearly.
Raytheby. A messuage and eight bovates of land held of John de Haryngton by fealty and by service of 1d. yearly.
Halyngton. A messuage held of Mary, late the wife of Peter de Legeburn, by knight’s service and by service of 6d. yearly.
Swaby. A toft, two crofts and a bovate of land held of John de Swaby by knight’s service and by service of 1/2d. or a pair of white gloves yearly.
The aforesaid Hawise had possession of the premises in Wytheryn from 21 July, 21 Edward III, on which day the said Robert died, until 29 June, 23 Edward III, on which day she died, after which the escheator had possession by reason of the minority of Katherine, daughter and heir of the said Robert, who was married in the lifetime of Hawise to Thomas de Wythornwyk, a minor. The said Katherine held the premises, of the inheritance of Robert de Cokeryngton, of John son and heir of Adam de Welle, a minor lately in the king’s wardship.
Hawise, from the time of the death of the said Robert, took possession of the premises in Raitheby until the age of the heir as next friend.
Mary, late the wife of Peter de Lekeburn, had possession of the premises in Halyngton until the lawful age of the heir.
John de Swaby similarly had possession of the premises in Swaby.
Afterwards the aforesaid heir had possession of all the premises as of her own inheritance.
Katherine daughter of the said Robert, now wife of Thomas de Wythornwyk, aged 20 years and more, is his heir.

Hundred of Rocheford.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Wakeryng, Monday after St. Matthew, 32 Edward III.
Great Wakeryng. Two parts of the manor (extent given) including 540a. of salt marsh, a pasture called ‘Oxonhamme,’ a leet on Thursday in Whitsun week, and a fishery for lampreys, with the reversion of the third part, which Ida de Nevill holds for her life. The whole manor is held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.
Little Wakeryng. Two parts of the manor held with the reversion of the third part, which Ida de Nevill holds for life. The whole manor is held of Philippa, queen of England, as of the honour of Reghleye by knight’s service.
All held for life by gift of Richard Dekene, clerk, Robert de Teye and John Berland the elder, to the said John for life, with remainder to William de Bohun, earl of Northampton, and his heirs, by a fine levied in the king’s court.
Thorp. The manor held jointly with Alesia his wife, who survives, by gift of Adam parson of St. Peter’s on Cornhull, London, Richard de Walton, parson of the church of Rocheford, Robert de Teye, Thomas Chauntecler, John Botiler of Waledene and Adam de Ardale to the said John and Alesia for their lives, with remainder to William de Bohun, earl of Northampton, and his heirs, by a fine levied in the king’s court, of Ralph, earl of Stafford, by knight’s service.
He died on the feast of St. James the Apostle, viz. 25 July last. William, son of John Semor of Sylam, his kinsman, aged 21 years and more, is his next heir in blood.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Branketre, Tuesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 32 Edward III.
Wetheresfeld. The manor and the advowson of the church held of the king in chief by service of finding a sack with a pin (chivili Anglice ‘prene’) in the king’s army in Wales.
Little Halyngbury. The manor and the advowson of the church held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Chigenhale Zoyn. The manor and the advowson of the church held of the earl of Oxford by knight’s service.
Chigenhale Tany. The manor and the advowson of the church held of Thomas Drokenesford, service not known.
Langham. The manor and the advowson of the church held of Elizabeth de Burgo by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Peltyngdon. The manor and the advowson of the church held of the bishop of London by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Pentelowe. A messuage and a carucate of land held of William de Assp’, kinsman and heir of William de Bradefeld, by service of 1d. yearly.
Est Horndon. The advowson of the church held of Thomas Drokenesford.
Totham Magna. The reversion of the manor after the death of Ida de Nevill, held of Elizabeth de Burgo by knight’s service.
All held jointly with Alesia his wife of the gift of Adam, parson of St. Peter’s on Cornhull, and others as in the last inquisition, with remainder as there.

437. THOMAS DE SEYMORE or DE SANCTO MAURO, knight.
Writ, 13 July, 32 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Irtlyngburgh, 3 September, 32 Edward III.
Irtlyngburgh. Three messuages, three virgates of land, 2a. meadow and 7s. rent held of the abbot of Peterborough by service of coming twice a year to his hundred of Hokeslowe and also rendering 2s. 6d. yearly, by gift of Warin de Sancto Mauro to the deceased and Laurence de Sancto Mauro and the heirs of the body of the deceased by a fine levied in the king’s court, with remainders successively to Alan de Sancto Mauro, brother of Thomas, and the heirs of his body, and Nicholas de Sancto Mauro, brother of Alan, and the heirs of his body. Thomas, Laurence and Alan are dead without heir of their bodies and Nicholas survives, and the premises ought to remain to him in virtue of the fine.
The deceased held no other lands in the county.
He died on Wednesday before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Gotham, 14 March, 33 Edward III.
Gotham. A chief messuage and a carucate of land lying uncultivated, 10a. meadow and 50s. rent held of Henry, duke of Lancaster, as of the honour of Leicester, service not known.
He died on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains last. John Worthy, aged 19 years, is his heir.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Flecchyng, 29 January, 33 Edward III.
Flecchyng. A messuage in ruins, 40a. several pasture nearly all heath, 2a. meadow, five marks rent of free tenants and a leet held twice a year at Hokeday directly after Easter and directly after Michaelmas, held of Henry, earl of Lancaster, by service of doing homage and fealty only.
Heghton. 40a. land called ‘Charlaxton,’ parcel of the aforesaid lands in Flecchyng, and held by the same service, charged with 40s. yearly to Philippa, queen of England, for ward of her castle of Pevenese, viz. 12d. an acre.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Heghworth, 28 July, 32 Edward III.
Polton. A messuage and 10a. land with the advowson of the priory held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Chellesworth. A messuage and two parts of a carucate of land held of Sir Edward, prince of Wales, of his manor of Aldeburn by knight’s service, together with the reversion of the third part, which is held for life by Katherine Nevill in dower.
Bedewynde. A water-mill held of Ralph, earl of Stafford, of his manor of Wexcombe, by knight’s service.
La Knoll. A messuage and two carucates of land held, part of John de Cobham, knight, of his manor of Chissebury, and part of the heir of Roger Norman, knight, of his manor of Hinsete, tenure and services not known.
Eton Meysy. The manor and the advowson of the church held in fee tail of Edward le Despencer, one of the heirs of the earl of Gloucester, of his manor of Fairford by service of one knight’s fee, by virtue of a fine levied at Westminster in the octave of Michaelmas, 3 Edward III, between Thomas de Sancto Mauro and Laurence de Sancto Mauro, parson of Hiegham Ferrers, querents, and Warin de Sancto Mauro, deforciant, whereby the said Thomas recognized the manor to be the right of Warin, who regranted it to Thomas and Laurence and the heirs of the body of Thomas, with remainders successively to Alan and Nicholas, brothers of Thomas, and the heirs of their bodies; Laurence being dead and Thomas and Alan also being dead without heir of their bodies, and Nicholas being still alive, the manor ought to remain to him.
The said Thomas held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Wednesday before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. John Worthy, son of Beatrice Worthy, his sister, is his heir; he was born at Naiton and baptized in the church there and is 19 years of age and more.

GLOUCESTER WITH THE MARCH OF WALES ADJACENT. Inq. taken at Kempeleye, 10 September, 32 Edward III.
Dymmok. The manor, which has no buildings or demesnes (extent given) held of the king in chief as of the king’s ancient demesne by service of 1d. yearly at Christmas.
Sir John de Grandissono, bishop of Exeter, his brother, aged 60 years, is his heir as regards this manor.
Oxenhale. The manor (extent given), including a park with deer, held in fee tail to himself and the heirs of his body with remainder to Thomas de Grandissono and the heirs of his body, of Sir Roger de Mortuo Mari, earl of March, as of the inheritance of Geoffrey de Genevyle, by service of half a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county and March.
He died on 10 August last. Heir, Sir John de Grandissono, as above.
HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Markle, 11 September, 32 Edward III.
Eton. The manor (extent given), including a park with deer and a wood called ‘Lyndonere,’ held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee.
Asperton and Stretton. The manor (extent given), including a water-mill and a park with deer, held of the duke of Lancaster by service of half a knight’s fee.

Burnham and Breene. The manors held for life of Richard de Cogan, as of his manor of Bampton by knight’s service, with remainder to Thomas de Grandissono and Margaret his wife and the heirs of the body of Thomas.
He died on the feast of St. Laurence last. Heir as above, aged 40 years and more.

BERKS. Inq. taken at Chepynglambourn, 8 October, 32 Edward III.
Chepynglambourn. The manor held to him and the heirs of his body of the heir of Fulk fitz Waryn, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of half a knight’s fee, with remainder to Thomas de Grandissono and the heirs of his body, by an indenture between the deceased and Thomas de Esegar the elder and William de Styntescombe, rector of the church of Teynton, who gave him the manor in this form.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Chelmersford, Thursday before St. Margaret, 32 Edward III.
Beauchaump Rothyng. The manor, held of the earl of Oxford by service of a knight’s fee.
Welcomstowe. The manor called ‘Bedyks,’ held jointly with Maud his wife, who survives, of the earl of Warwick by service of rendering yearly a pair of dice (talorum).
Elmedon. A tenement called ‘Coggeshales’ held of John de Rediswell,
John de Benyngton and Hugh de Trykyngham, clerk, by service of rendering yearly 12d. and also ploughing with one plough for six days and by 12 boonworks (precar’) in autumn, and suit of court every three weeks.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Wednesday before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. Thomas Fraunceys his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Bikeleswade, Monday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr.
Holewell. A messuage, 120a. land held of the prior and religious of Caldewell by Bedeford by service of 40s. yearly; a messuage and 7a. land and pasture held of John Malory by service of 10s. yearly and suit of court every three weeks; and 2a. land held of the abbot of Westminster by service of 4d. rent and suit of court.
He died on Tuesday after SS. Peter and Paul last. Heir as above, aged 26 years and more.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Holborn without the Bar of London, 16 July, 32 Edward III.
Northalle. The manor held of the earl of Hertford by service of doing suit at his court called ‘Blancheapeldon’ on the fourteenth day after Easter without being summoned and also doing one suit at his court at Hertford on the fourteenth day after Michaelmas without being summoned.
Northalle. The manor called Doune in the town of Northalle, held of the same earl by the aforesaid service.
Acton. Tenements (unspecified) held of the bishop of London by service of rendering 5s. yearly at his manor of Fulham and doing suit at his court there every three weeks.
Harwe. Tenements held of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of rendering 25s. yearly at his manor of Harwe and doing suit at his court there every three weeks.
Fyncheslegh. Tenements held of the bishop of London by service of rendering 40s. yearly at his manor of Fulham and doing suit at his court there every three weeks.
Stanmere. The manor held jointly by the said Simon and Maud his wife, who survives, by gift of Ellis Fraunceys to them and the heirs of Simon, of the abbot of St. Alban’s by service of rendering 10 marks yearly.
Risslepe. 57a. arable and 3a. meadow held of the prior of Okeborn by service of rendering 8s. yearly.

Halwele. The manor held jointly by the said Simon and Maud his wife, to them and the heirs of Simon, of Luke de Ponyngges, by service of suit at his court of his manor of Erde every three weeks.
Welmenton. Tenements called ‘Rowehulle’ held jointly as above by gift of Henry atte Swane, of Otto de Graunsoun by service of suit at his court of his manor of Chelsfeld every three weeks and rendering 6 1/2 marks yearly.
Sutton. Tenements called ‘Heghelond’ held jointly as above by gift of John Clemont, of the abbot of Gaunt by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly at his manor of Leuesham.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Schepele, Thursday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 32 Edward III.
Schepele Tenements called ‘Tabelerhalle’ (extent given) held of John de Mombray by service of enclosing one perch with a hedge (claudendi unam perticam per hayam) in the park of ‘la Knappe.’
He died on 28 May last. Nicholas de Benton his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Wilton, Thursday after St. Barnabas, 32 Edward III.
Fallardeston. A messuage and three virgates of land, which were held of him before he purchased them ten years ago, as of the manor of Fallardeston by knight’s service; the manor he held for life by the law of England as of the inheritance of Margaret, late his wife, one of the aunts and heirs of John de Grymstede, son and heir of Thomas de Grymstede. It is held of John de Mombray as of his barony of Brembre by service of one knight’s fee.
Croucheston and Throp. A carucate of land, 56s. yearly rent and 4a. meadow held for life by the law of England as above of the heirs of Richard le Warener by service of 60s. yearly.
Date of death as above. Heir, Nicholas, son of the said Thomas and Margaret, as above.

441. KATHERINE, WIFE OF JOHN FERMER.
Writ, 22 May, 32 Edward III.
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Thele, 6 June, 32 Edward III.
Thele. The manor held for life of the inheritance of John de Goldyngton, son and heir of herself and John de Goldyngton, formerly her husband, of the earl of Oxford by knight’s service.
Quenehawe. Ten marks rent similarly held for life of the abbot and convent of Westminster, service not known.
She died on Sunday before Whitsun last. The aforesaid John, aged 26 years and more, is her son and heir.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Chelmersford, 5 June, 32 Edward III.
Foxhirde. The manor, with the appurtenances called ‘Borlehalle’ held by joint acquisition with John Fermer, her late husband, for their lives, by demise of Andrew de Bures, knight, with reversion to him after their deaths, of the lady Elizabeth de Burgo by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee as of the honour of Clare; a messuage and 120a. land with view of frankpledge similarly acquired by feoffment of John Cavendyssh and William Doreward to the said John and Katherine and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Andrew de Bures and Alice his wife and the heirs of Andrew, held of the said Andrew as of the aforesaid manor of Foxhirde by service of 13s. 10d. yearly; a messuage, fourscore acres of land, 3a. meadow and a water-mill in the hamlet called ‘Westones’ held in the same form of the prior of Clare by service of 100s. yearly.
Pentelowe. A messuage and 60a. land called ‘Merseyes’ held in the same form of Sir John filz Wauter by service of 20s. yearly.
Both the last held of the gift of John Cavendyssh and William Doreward, with remainder as above.
John Fermer and Katherine died without heir of their bodies.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Chelmersford, 5 June, 32 Edward III.
Spryngfeld. A moiety of the manor (extent given) including 11a. wood and the moiety of a water-mill, held for life by grant of Richard Grapynel, formerly rector of the church of Thele, to John de Goldyngton, formerly her husband, and herself and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of John, of the king as of the honour of Peverel, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Great Leghes. A third part of 100s. rent in the hamlet of Chateleye held by way of dower after the death of John de Goldyngton, of the inheritance of John de Goldyngton, son and heir of the said John and Katherine, the whole rent being held of the king in chief by service of rendering an ell of scarlet cloth, worth 6s.8d., at his coronation.
Spryngefeld. A tenement called ‘Olyvers,’ whereof the messuage and 20a. land are held of the earl of Hereford by service of a rose yearly, and the rest of the abbot of Coggeshale, John Shardelowe and John Novat by parcels, services not known.
Little Badewe. A messuage and a carucate of land called ‘Gracys’ held for life of the inheritance of the aforesaid John, the son and heir, of Nicholas Burnel by service of a pair of gilt spurs worth 6d.
Terlyng. The manor of Ryngers held for life of the same inheritance of the bishop of Norwich by knight’s service.
Aldham. A messuage and a carucate of land similarly held, whereof a parcel is held of Robert de Teye by service of 6d. yearly, and the rest of James atte Lee by service of 7d. yearly.
Sturmere. The manor similarly held of the lady Elizabeth de Burgo, as of the honour of Clare, by service of 16s. yearly.
Colne Engayne. A messuage and 100a. land similarly held of the lady of Wake (?) by service of 32s. yearly; 9a. land similarly held of the earl of Oxford by service of 5s. yearly; and 8a. land similarly held of the heirs of Thomas Dengayne by service of 2s. yearly.

442. AGNES, LATE THE WIFE OF ROBERT ACHARD.
Writ, 14 April, 32 Edward III.
BERKS. Inq. made at Aldermanston, 20 April, 32 Edward III.
Aldermanston. The manor held for life, by a fine levied in 16 Edward III, by gift of Master Walter de Stratton, parson of the church of Shalyngford, and Thomas de Aunewyk to her and Robert, formerly her husband, for their lives, with remainders successively to Peter Achard and his heirs by Elizabeth his wife, now deceased, Peter de la Mare, knight, and Joan his wife for their lives, Thomas son of Peter de la Mare and the heirs of his body, and Richard brother of the last named Thomas and his heirs; held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Spersholte. A third part of the manor held in dower after the death of Robert Achard, which manor, except the advowson of the church, was after the death of the said Robert by the king’s writ to John de Alveton, late escheator, delivered to Peter Achard, son and heir of Robert, to hold for his life, with the reversion of the third part after the death of Agnes, by virtue of the above mentioned fine.
Estmanton. The manor held for life of Robert Frechevill by knight’s service by grant of Master Walter de Stratton and Walter de Worthe, parson of the church of Chelreye, made to her and Robert her husband for their lives by a fine levied in 16 Edward III, with remainders successively to Peter Achard and Elizabeth his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and to Thomas de la Mare and the heirs of his body.
Aldermanston and Burghildebury. Thomas de Aunewyk and Roger de Eston, chaplain, held a messuage, a carucate and three virgates of land, 3a. meadow, 15a. pasture, 8a. wood and 5s. 4d. rent of Robert Achard and Agnes his wife by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee as of their manor of Aldermanston, and by a fine levied in 16 Edward III the said Thomas and Roger granted these tenements to Master Ellis de Sancto Albano for his life, with remainders successively to Robert Achard and Agnes and the heirs male of their bodies, Peter de la Mare and Joan his wife for their lives, and Thomas son of Peter de la Mare and his heirs. Master Ellis, Peter and Joan are dead, Robert Achard died without heir male by Agnes; the latter survived and held the premises, together with a virgate of land, in Benham, which is held of Robert de Ildesleye by service of 4s. yearly, also in virtue of the fine. After the death of Agnes these tenements remain to Thomas son of Peter de la Mare, aged 25 years and more.
Aldermanston and Estmanton and the third part of Spersholt remain to Peter Achard, aged 40 years and more.
Agnes died on 10 April last without heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Bolton, Wednesday the eve of All Saints, 32 Edward III.
Matfen West. The manor (extent given), including a free tenant named John de Gourley.
Nafferton, an appurtenance of Matfen West (extent given), including a free tenant named Thomas de Scrutevill.
Held of the king in chief as of the crown by homage and fealty and by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Matfen West, with the premises in Nafferton, was formerly a grand serjeanty held of the king in chief, but in the time of King Henry, the king’s great-grandfather, as they understand, it was given at a rent (arentata) to divers free tenants in fee by the king’s justices to be held by them and their heirs of the king in chief by knight’s service and by service of rendering at the exchequer of Newcastle upon Tyne, by the hands of the sheriff of Northumberland, 4d. an acre; and this rent, which formerly came to 25l. a year, the present king by his charter dated 29 July in his twelfth year gave to William de Felton, now deceased, without rendering anything.
Matfen. A toft and 100a. land purchased of the sister of Richard de Boteland, who held the same of the king in chief by knight’s service and by service of rendering 4d. an acre, which rent forms part of the 25l. mentioned above, but only 4s. of it for herbage can be levied, as the rest lies waste for want of tenants on account of the poorness of the land. It was taken into the king’s hand by the escheator by reason of the alienation to William de Felton and is still in the king’s hand in the custody of the escheator.
Considerable parts of the premises are described in the extents as being waste and not contributing their share of the 25l.
Edelyngham. The manor (extent given), including a several pasture called ‘le Heynyng’ and a plot called ‘Rughlay.’
Lemokton. A moiety of the town (extent given), including plots called ‘Bysheles’ and ‘Haynyng,’ parcels of the manor of Edelyngham.
Lemokton, Neuton, Craulawe and Bolton. 15s. 10d. rents of freemen.
Lemokton. The rent of one freeman, who holds the other half of the town of the deceased by fealty and rendering 13s. 4d.
All held of Henry de Percy as of the manor of Benlay by fealty and by service of a sore sparrowhawk yearly or 6d. at Midsummer.
Lemokton. A place called ‘Lemokton hall’ held of the master of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England as of the manor of Chibburn by fealty and by service of 16d. yearly.
Swynlayskeles. A toft and 27a. land held of Henry de Percy by fealty.
Heddon. The manor held jointly with Isabel his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of Mary de Sancto Paulo, countess of Pembroke, as of the manor of Bywell by fealty and service of 6s. 8d. yearly for castle guard and 15d. for cornage. It is only worth 40s. a year on account of the poverty of the land and lack of tenants.
Suth Boteland. The manor (extent given) held jointly as above of Gilbert de Umframvill, earl of Angus, by fealty and service of 8s. 8d. yearly.
North Boteland. A husbandland held jointly as above of Robert de Herle by fealty and service of 20d. yearly.
Le Stele. A place (placeam) so called in Redesdale held jointly as above of Gilbert de Umframvill by service of a peppercorn yearly at Christmas. It is in the hands of tenants and renders 26s. 8d. yearly.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Yslep, 24 October, 32 Edward III.
Drayton. The manor (extent given), including buildings in the inner (intrinceca) court and granges with cowsheds in the outer (extrinceca) court, an orchard, 20a. meadow by the river Nene, a water-mill, a fulling-mill and a fishery on one side (ex una parte) of the Nene, which she held jointly with Simon her husband, now deceased, by a fine in the court of Edward II, by which the remainder belongs to John their son, who survives, and the heirs of his body, held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Brikstoke and Lufwyk. Fifteen messuages, a mill, seven tofts, 493a. land, 8a. meadow, 50a. wood and 4l. 4s. rent and 15 capons yearly, held jointly with the aforesaid Simon by a fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder after their deaths to Baldwin, son of John de Drayton, and Alice his wife in fee tail; the said Baldwin and Alice both survive. Three hundred and thirteen acres of land and 50a. wood of the premises are held of the king in socage by rendering 4d. an acre yearly, total 11 marks 7s., at the king’s manor of Brikstok, and the remainder of the lord of Luffewyk by service of 10s. yearly.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 24 September last.

It was also found in the same book under the headings Scutage of Gascony in the counties of Cambridge and Huntingdon and Barony of Warin son of Gerold thus:—

It was found moreover in the Red Book remaining in the Exchequer, which is of record, under the heading of Scutage of Wales assessed at 10s. in the second year of King Richard in the counties of Cambridge and Huntingdon thus:—

HUNTINGDON. Inq. taken at Ovirton Watervill, Wednesday before the Conversion of St. Paul, 32 Edward III.
Botulvesbrigg. The manor, containing six carucates of land, 40a. meadow and 4l. yearly rent. Robert de Gymeges held the whole manor in the time of King Richard of the king in chief by service of two parts of a knight’s fee. His estate Simon de Drayton had in a moiety of the manor with the chief messuage which he held of the king in chief, and by the name of the whole manor of Botulvesbrigg gave it to William, parson of the church of Conyngton, John, parson of the church of Langeport, and John, parson of the church of Horpol, without the king’s licence. John, William and John, also without the king’s licence, enfeoffed of the said moiety the said Simon and Margaret his wife for their lives, with remainders successively to Baldwin, son of John de Drayton, and Alice his wife and the heirs of their bodies, Gilbert, brother of the said Baldwin, and the heirs of his body, and the right heirs of Simon. The other moiety Simon and Margaret purchased of John Paynel, knight, and Agnes his wife, without the king’s licence, for the lives of the purchasers, with reversion to John and Agnes and the heirs of Agnes. Margaret died seised of the whole manor. One moiety thus belongs to the aforesaid Baldwin and Alice and the other moiety to John Paynel, a minor aged 14 years, as son and heir of John, son and heir of the aforesaid Agnes, daughter and heir of Alexander, son and heir of Hugh, son and heir of Emma, daughter and one of the heirs of Robert de Gymeges. The custody of the latter moiety belongs to the king during the minority of John Paynel.
Margaret died on Wednesday before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last; immediately after her death Simon Simeon entered upon the manor and received the issues until Christmas following, by what title is not known.
Mollesworth. The manor held for life of William de Lyndesey by service of a pair of gilt spurs. The reversion belongs to Christiana, wife of John de Draiton, as daughter and one of the heirs of Gilbert de Lyndesey, and Thomas Dacre, son of Isabel daughter of the same Gilbert, as kinsman and co-heir with Christiana. Christiana and Thomas are both of full age.
