Langeton. Ten messuages and 10 virgates of land in the hands of bondmen, 64s. from free tenants, 4 cottages, and a moiety of a windmill, held of William, son and heir of William Latymer, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
He died in parts beyond the seas, on 4 February, 17 Edward III. Nicholas Latymer, his son, aged 9 years at the feast of the Purification last, is his heir.

Newenham in Asshindon by Waledon Abbatis. The manor, held by service of half a knight’s fee of John de Lacy of the county of Wilts, who holds the same of Edward de Kendale by the same service.
He died in parts beyond the seas on 18 January last. John de Lacy, his brother, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

Westrasen. A fourth part of the manor, held, as of the right of Elizabeth his wife, who survives married to John de Barton, of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died on Tuesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 21 Edward III. John de Gaskrik his son, aged 12 years, is his heir.

7. MAUD, LATE THE WIFE OF WILLIAM DE LODELOWE.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, 12 July, 21 Edward III.
Hodenet. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, by service of being steward of the king’s castle of Montgomery, which is in the king’s hand by the escheat of Roger de Bethlem, formerly earl of Salop. The lord of Hodenet and his ancestors were accustomed and ought to have easements of houses within the bailiwick of the said castle and other necessaries pertaining to the said stewardship, viz. staying there with his wife, with a chambermaid and a laundress, within the said bailiwick, at the king’s cost; and the said lord ought to have two robes yearly fit for a knight, two esquires, five grooms, five horses, four brachets, and two greyhounds, entirely at the king’s cost.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
Lawrence de Lodelowe, her son, aged 42 years at Christmas day last, is her heir.

Suthcreyk. The manor (extent given), held jointly with Alice his wife, who still survives, of the king in chief, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
He died on 5 November last. Nicholas his son, aged 10 years and more, is his heir.

DORSET. Inq. taken at Middelton, Monday after Holy Trinity, 21 Edward III.
Warmwelle. A third part of the town, and a carucate of land at Lytelmayne, held of the king in chief, service not specified; which third part of the town was held of the said William by service of a pair of silver spurs, or 6d., and a spade (?) (unam trencheam), or 12d., and the said carucate of land was held of the said William by service of a sore sparrowhawk (nisy) or 12d., yearly.
He died on Monday before the Purification last. William, son of Matthew son of the said William, aged 5 years and more, is his heir.

11. EDMUND PEVEREL.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands, heir &c. of the said Edmund, 20 June, 21 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Kirketon in Lyndes’, Saturday after St. Martin in the Winter, 21 Edward III.
Scalby. Two parts of the manor of Southalle, held of Elizabeth and Margery, daughters and one heir (filiabus et uno herede) of John Paynel of Rasen, by service of half a knight’s fee; and the said Elizabeth and Margery hold the same of the king in chief by knight’s service, and were in his wardship by reason of their minority.
He died on Monday after St. Mark, 5 Edward III. John Peverell, aged 19 years, is his heir.
Writ of plenius certiorari because the king is given to understand that certain men of the county of Lincoln, immediately after the said Edmund’s death, entered upon and wasted the lands &c. in Scalleby, which the said Edmund held by knight’s service of the heirs of John Paynell of Rasen, which lands are in the king’s hand by reason of the said Edmund’s death and the minority of the same (sic) John, 30 January, 22 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Clamforthbridge on Thursday before St. Ambrose, 22 Edward III.
Scalleby. He had no lands &c. in Scalleby on the day he died, because long before that he was seised of the manor of Northalle in Scalleby, and of a third part of the manor of Southalle in the same town, both of which he granted to Richard de Amcotes and Thomas de Amcotes his brother for their lives.
He had no other lands &c. at any time in the said town.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Wotton Basset on Sunday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 21 Edward III.
Great Chelesworth and Colcote. A third part of a messuage, 16a. land and 5a. meadow in Great Chelesworth, 3a. land and 4a. meadow in Colcote, pasture, 33s. 11d. rent, and 15s. 5 1/2d. tallage; whereof the messuage, land, meadow and pasture in Great Chelesworth are held of the king in chief by serjeanty of 6s. 1/2d. yearly, and the land and meadow in Colcote are held of the earl of Cornwall in chief by service of 10s. yearly.
She died on Wednesday, the feast of the Assumption, 21 Edward III. John de la Ryver of Tormerton, knight, aged 30 years, is her heir.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Abenale, Sunday before the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 21 Edward III.
Abbenale. The manor (extent given) including 60a. of new assart for which he rendered 14s. 1/4d. at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of 30s. yearly, payable at Newenham to the constable of the castle of St. Bryavell (and) by service of keeping the king’s wood in the forest of Dene called the bailiwick of Abbenale, by grand serjeanty.
He died on Thursday, the eve of St. Lawrence, 21 Edward III. Margaret, his daughter, aged 5 years at the Annunciation last, is his presumptive (sub postos) heir; Isabel his wife is pregnant, and so the jury cannot say who is his heir.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Turveye, Tuesday, the feast of St. Leonard, 21 Edward III.
Turveye. A messuage, 16a. land and 1/2a. wood held of the king in chief by petty serjeanty, rendering yearly to the king by the hands of the sheriff 12d. for hidage, 12d. for view, and 2s. for suit and ward; and 1/2a. meadow held of the king in chief by petty serjeanty, rendering 16d. yearly by the hands of the escheator of the county.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.

15. CHRISTIANA or CRISTINA DE STOURE.
Writ, 12 April, 21 Edward III.
DORSET. Inq. Thursday after St. Barnabas, 21 Edward III.
Mulebourn Deverel. A messuage and a carucate of land, held by the grant of John Wake and John de Sandhulle, jointly with Ellis de Deverel, sometime her husband, to hold for their lives, with remainder to John de Deverel, son and heir of the said Ellis, and his heirs. The said tenements are held of Robert le Fitzpayn, by fealty, and suit at the said Robert’s court of Okford twice a year. The said John de Deverel transgressed (forisfecit) against the king, and was adjudged an enemy and traitor to the king, in the lifetime of the said Ellis, and, after the said Ellis’s death, was taken, drawn, hanged, and beheaded, whereby the reversion of the said tenements belonged to the king, who granted it by his charter to Thomas Cary, by virtue of which grant the said Cristina attorned to the said Thomas.
She died on Monday, the morrow of the Close of Easter last.

Endorsed by the escheator that she held no lands &c. in the counties of Essex and Middlesex, that he could enquire about.
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Hycche, 15 December, 21 Edward III.
Hycche. The manor, held for her life, of the grant of king Edward II, to hold jointly to her and the said Robert, now long deceased, and to the heirs male of their bodies, of the king and his heirs, by the accustomed services, viz. by service of 1 1/2 knights’ fees.
Dynsle Furnival by Hycch. Certain lands &c. called Madecroft, viz. a messuage, 240a. arable, 2a. pasture, 6a. wood, and 40s. rent, held for her life, of the feoffment of Gerard de Eylesford, to the said Robert and Margaret, and the heirs of the said Robert, of the heirs of Thomas de Furnival of Sheffeld, by service of 1d. yearly.
Aldenham. Two messuages and a carucate and a half of land in the parish, held for life, by joint acquisition with the said Robert, to them and the heirs of the said Robert; whereof a messuage and a carucate of land are held of the heir of Henry atte Nassh by service of a rose yearly; and the other messuage and half carucate of land are held of the heir of John de Sancto Amando by service of a clove yearly.
Idelestre. Two messuages, 40a. land, 2a. meadow, 1a. wood, held for life, by joint acquisition with the said Robert as above, of the abbot of St. Alban’s, by service of 26s. 1d. yearly.
She died on Sunday the feast of St. Katherine last. Edward de Rendale, son of the said Robert and Margaret, aged 30 years and more, is the said Robert’s next heir in blood and son and heir of the said Robert and Margaret. But John de Leye, son of the said Margaret, aged 40 years and more, is her next heir in blood.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Bedford, Monday after St. Lucy, 21 Edward III.
Wrastlingworth. The manor, held for her life, of the king in chief by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee, of the inheritance of Edward de Kendale, by fine levied in the king’s court, of the grant of Nicholas de Huntercombe to the said Robert and Margaret and the heirs of the said Robert.
Date of death as above. Heir as above, of the said Robert and Margaret.

Petham in the lathe of Sutton. The manor held of John Kyryel, knight, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee at the manor of Eynesford; and the said John holds it of the archbishop of Canterbury, and the archbishop of the king.
Leghe, in the parish of Lymmynge in the lathe of Shewynghope. The manor held as dower after the death of John de Leghe sometime her husband, of the earl of Norhampton, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee at the manor of Tonge; and the said earl holds of the archbishop of Canterbury, and he of the king.
She died on Monday after St. Katherine last. John de Leghe, son of the said John de Leghe, aged 40 years and more, is her heir.

Shalden. The manor (extent given), held of the feoffment of Nicholas de Bosco by fine levied in the king’s court to the said Margaret and Robert de Kendale, knight, sometime her husband, and the heirs of their bodies, of Henry, earl of Lancaster, as of his manor of Hurtligh Mauduyt, by service of half a knight’s fee.
Shirefeld. A messuage, a carucate of land, and 14a. meadow, held of Margaret, late the wife of John de Warblyngton, by service of 3s. 2d. yearly.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Podyngton on Wednesday after Christmas, 21 Edward III.
Wymyngton. A messuage &c., 90a. arable, 1a. meadow, 1/2a. several pasture, 13s. 4d. rent of free tenants, and 5 capons at Christmas from free tenants, held of the king in chief by petty serjeanty, viz. by service of finding a hobbler (hobelarium) in the king’s war within England, at his own costs for forty days, viz. 20s. being 6d. a day, and by service of rendering to the king yearly, by the hands of the sheriff of Bedford, for hidage, view and prest (prestacione arentata), 9d. at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and at the feast of St. Martin, for hidage, suit, and ward, and prest, 19 1/2d. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.

YORK. Inq. taken at Yapum, Wednesday in the week of Holy Trinity, 21 Edward III.
Yapum. A third part of a ruinous messuage and two bovates of land, held in dower of the inheritance of John, son of John Larcher; which, together with two parts of the same messuage, and four bovates of land, which the said John son of John holds by process of the king’s court, are held of the king in chief by service of a seventh part of a certain serjeanty, the whole of which serjeanty is held of the king in chief, by service of finding a man with bow and arrows in the king’s castle of York, at his own charges for forty days, if there should be war in the said county, and by homage.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 14 February last. The said John Larcher, son of John, aged 23 years, is her heir.

Estburne. A messuage and 12a. land, held of the grant of Richard de Pepelesham, to whom the king granted the custody of all the said land and tenement, until the lawful age of the said William, then a minor in the king’s wardship, in 2 Edward III, rendering to the king yearly, by the hands of the sheriff 3s. 9 1/2d. The said tenements are held of the king in chief, by service of a sixtieth part of a knight’s fee, as the jury understand.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Hereford on Saturday before SS. Fabian and Sebastian, 21 Edward III.
Turneston. A messuage, 100a. land, 3a. meadow, 1a. wood, and 20s. rent, with the advowson of the church, held for life, by the demise of Nicholas Danseye, of Roger de Chaundos, by knight’s service, with successive remainders to Joan the wife of Richard son of Richard Danseye for life, and John son of Richard son of Richard and his heirs.
He died on Thursday before the Epiphany last. The said John son of Richard son of Richard, aged 22 years, is his heir in blood.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Wermynstre, 14 January, 21 Edward III.
Bratton and Dultone. The manors (extents given) held of the king in chief, by serjeanty of 10 marks and 4s. 10 1/2d. sheriff’s aid, for half a knight’s fee, payable to the sheriff at the castle of Salisbury for the king’s use. (In the extent 3 carucates are said to contain 300a.)
Date of death as above. John Danseye, son of Richard Daneseye the younger, lately deceased, kinsman of Richard Danseye now deceased, aged 22 years and more, is heir of the latter.

23. PHILIP DE GRETE.
Writ, whereas in return to a former writ the escheator signified that he had been to the lands &c. which belonged to the said Philip, to take them into the king’s hand, and that the wife of John Talbot, keeper of the manor of Boreford by the king’s commission, and John, bailiff of Boreford, and others unknown, disturbed him, so that he could not execute the king’s writ, to the manifest contempt and prejudice of the king; he is commanded to take with him the power of the county (posse comitatus) if necessary, and take the said lands &c. into the king’s hand, and to make inquisition as commanded; and if he shall find any opposing or rebellious, to take and safely keep them in prison, until the king shall further direct regarding them; 18 June, 21 Edward III.
SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury (Salop’), 10 October, 21 Edward III.
Grete. The manor (extent given) held for his life, of the inheritance of Agnes, late the wife of Henry de Halughton, which after his death ought to revert to the said Agnes, with successive remainders to Richard de Hawkeston and Agnes his wife for their lives, John de Halughton and Joan his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said John de Halughton, as in a certain fine levied before the king’s justices is more fully contained. The said manor is held of the heir of Richard de Cornubia, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the manor of Boreford, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. The said Philip also held for his life, of the inheritance of the aforesaid Agnes, a certain yearly rent of 6s., parcel of the said manor. The pleas and perquisites of court of Grete and of Weston are worth 6d. yearly.
He died on 26 April, 20 Edward III. John son of Henry de Halughton, his kinsman, aged 24 years and more at the feast of St. Michael last, is his heir.

Eystans ad Turrim. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Wyndlesore, by service of a knight’s fee, and rendering yearly for the ward of the castle of Wyndesore 10l. of silver.
Donemowe. 60a. land, held of John Gesors by service of 6s. 8d. yearly.
Brokesheved. The manor, held jointly with Margaret his wife, who still survives, of Elizabeth de Burgo, lady of Clare, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, of the grant of Thomas de Simplyng, rector of the church of Stanstede Mofichet, and John de London.
He died on 30 January last. His daughters, Isabel aged 5 years, and Annora (Ananora) aged 2 years, are his next heirs in blood.

WARWICK. Inq. taken at Ichynton, 18 July, 21 Edward III.
Long Ichynton. The manor (extent given) held for her life, of the gift of Ralph Bygot, who, with the king’s licence, enfeoffed the said John de Oddyngseles, deceased, and Emma thereof for their lives, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John, of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on the morrow of St. John the Baptist last. John de Oddyngseles, son of the aforesaid John de Oddyngseles, aged 34 years at the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary last, is heir of the said John and Emma.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Bradewell, 25 July, 21 Edward III.
Bradewell. The manor (extent given), including 12a. meadow, whereof 8a. lie by the river Thames, and 4a. in Egaridiseye and Horsepole, held for her life of the inheritance of the said John, who, by a fine levied in the king’s court, acknowledged the said manor to be the right of Ralph Bygod, who re-granted it to the said John and Emma, for their lives, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John for ever. It is held of the king in chief by service of a fifth part of a knight’s fee.
She died on 25 June, 21 Edward III. John de Oddyngseles, son of the said John and Emma, aged 36 years, is heir of the said John.

Piriton. A moiety of the manor (extent given), including a leet to be held about the feast of St. Michael by the sheriff, whence the king receives 5s. of common fine by the sheriff’s hands, held for her life, of the king in chief, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, of the grant of Thomas de Wassyngle, to the said Emma and the said John de Oddyngseles, sometime her husband, and the heirs of the said John, of the king and his heirs, by the accustomed services, by fine levied in the king’s court, 10 Edward II, and by the king’s charter of licence, 9 Edward II.

Butterwyk. A messuage, 15 bovates of land held by tenants at will for a rent of 100s., and 10s. rent of cottars, held jointly with Isabel his wife, who still survives, of the grant of Nicholas de Wirthorp, chaplain, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Durand, of William de Graistok, by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Thursday before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last. William Bard, son of the said Durand and Isabel, aged 14 years and more, is his heir.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Northale on Thursday after St. Leonard, 21 Edward III.
Edelesburgh. A ruinous messuage &c., 34a. arable, 62a. poor arable (montanea, alba et malviosa), 4 1/2a. meadow, 2 1/2a. pasture (extent given), 35s. 6d. rent, and works and customs of two bond tenants, held of the king in chief, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee, and rendering 19 1/2d. yearly to the king, by the hands of the sheriff for view and prest (prestacione arentata) and also 5s. 10 1/2d. for prest, suit and ward; 5a. land held of William la Zouche, as of his manor of Eyton, by knight’s service and the scutage pertaining to such a tenement; a piece of land and meadow held of the prior of Caldewelle by service of 12d. yearly; and a cottage held of Stephen Boweles by service of 6d. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick, so far as the jury can inquire.
He died on Friday before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last. William his son, aged 13 years, is his heir.

27. LAWRENCE DE PRESTON.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Northampton, 24 March, 21 Edward III.
Gretton. The manor (extent given), including 20s. yearly rent called ‘Dybbyngsilver,’ held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee, and by service of a yearly farm of 25l., payable at the feast of St. Michael.
Preston. The manor, held, to him and the heirs of his body, by fine levied in the king’s court, of Lawrence de Hastynges, earl of Penebroch, by service of a knight’s fee, and suit of the said earl’s court called ‘Baronnesmot’ at Barton or Huntingdon every month. But long before his death he demised the said manor of Preston to Roger, bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, for the said bishop’s life, at a yearly rent of 20l.; and the bishop demised his estate in the said manor to Thomas son and heir of the said Lawrence.
He died on 25 February, 21 Edward III. Thomas de Preston, knight, his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Totenham, Friday, the morrow of All Saints, 21 Edward III.
Totenham. A third part of a third part of the manor, held for his life, jointly with Nicholaa his wife, who still survives, of the king in chief, of the grant of Richard Spigurnel, with successive remainders to John and Nicholas their sons and the heirs of their bodies respectively, and to the right heirs of the aforesaid John de Moekyng, by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster, on the quinzaine of St. John the Baptist, 14 Edward III, and by the king’s charter of licence, granted at the Tower of London, 18 May, 14 Edward III. The said third part of a third part is held of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
He died about the octave of St. Michael last. Thomas his son, aged 13 years and more, is his heir in blood.
