Footnotes

  • 1. Death not recorded on BR. A William Freston DCL was prebendary of Weldland in St Paul's 1461–76 and rector of St Peter, Paul's Wharf, in August 1453 when his title was the subject of litigation. The next rector there is not recorded until 1485 (Hennessy, p 351).
  • 2. Robert Fenys, Kt, of Hecham, Suffolk, left a will of 28 March, proved 12 May, 1509 (PROB 11/16, f. 126r) requesting burial in the church there. His death is not recorded on BR.
  • 3. Among deaths for 1493 (331). A Thomas Babham (Babam), grocer, requested burial in the church or cloister of St Mary Woolnoth by his will of 21 April 1493 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 53r). The date of probate is omitted, but it is among other wills proved in 1493.
  • 4. William Hopton was knighted in 1483 (Shaw, Knights of England, II, 21).
  • 5. John Clerk, citizen and grocer, who requested burial at St Mary Woolchurch in or near the place where his late wife Joan was buried if he died in London by his will of 8 July 1479, proved 15 March 1484 (PROB 11/7, f. 62v). He left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul. In 1479 his wife is named as Katherine.
  • 6. Perhaps the Thomas Dalston, citizen and glover, of St Botolph Aldgate who was a common councilman for Portsoken ward in 1481 and who died there in 1484 (Tucker).
  • 7. Perhaps the Joan Simonds (Symondes), widow, who requested burial in the ceme- tery of St Lawrence Pountney by her will of 10 February, proved 22 February, 1484 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 372). Two women named Joan Simmond (Symond) are among admissions before 1449 (18) and 1483 (242) respectively.
  • 8. Among deaths for 1488 (as Chadworth) (294). The name is unusual. He is not the John Chedworth, canon of St Paul's, who died in 1471 but may be the John Chad- dilworth, scholar of Winchester in 1434 and fellow of New College Oxford 1440–4, who held various livings until he vacated the rectory of Clandon Abbotts, Surrey in 1481 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 9. Among deaths (as Gregory Lynd) for 1497 (361). Priest of St Faith by St Paul's, who requested burial in the cloister of the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's by his will of 18 October, proved 2 December, 1496 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 113r).
  • 10. Among deaths for 1485 (264). Robert Bassett, salter, alderman 1461–84, MP London 1460, mayor 1475, died 1484 His monument was erected in All Hallows Bread Street (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 346).
  • 11. Among deaths below (264). William Heryot, draper (formerly shearman) and alderman 1469–85; mayor 1481, Kt 1482; MP London in 1483 and 1484 (Beaven, II, 14; Thrupp, p 349). He requested burial in the church of St Dunstan in the East and left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity to convey his body to burial and to pray for his soul by his will of 29 December 1484, proved 17 March 1485 (PROB 11/7, f. 162r).
  • 12. Among deaths (as Ottersale) for 1493 (331). John Hothersall, notary and stationer, requested burial in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's (although a parishioner of St Nicholas Shambles) by his will of 31 January, proved 18 February, 1493 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f 46v). His wife Joan, mentioned there, was admitted with him (263).
  • 13. Among deaths for 1506 (454). Nicholas Alwyn, MP London 1491, master of the Mercers 1496, alderman 1496–1506, mayor 1499 (Beaven, II, 19; Thrupp, p 321). By his will (codicil added 16 January, proved 11 February, 1506) he requested burial in the church of St Mary le Bow and left 20s to the parish clerks' and Pappey fraternities respectively (PROB 11/15, f. 9r).
  • 14. Among deaths for 1494 (338). Presumably the Richard Cely, merchant of the Calais Staple, who requested burial in the tomb of his parents Richard and Agnes in the chapel of St Stephen within St Olave Hart Street by his will of 4 July, proved 30 July, 1493 (PROB 11/9, f. 196v). His wife Anne is mentioned in his will and an Anne Cely was admitted with Richard above (263).
  • 15. Among deaths for 1487 (285). Probably the William Pratt, mercer and common councilman for Cripplegate ward (Tucker) from the parish of St Mary Alderman- bury whose wife Alice is mentioned in his will of 11 July, proved 4 August, 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 192r). An Alice Pratt is also among admissions for 1485 below (263).
  • 16. Among deaths for 1500 (386). Probably the William Bracebridge, draper and common councilman for Broad Sreet ward, of St Martin Outwich (Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 134r). By his will, taken before the Cardinal in 1499, he requested burial either in the church of the Austin Friars, London, or at the Sheen Charterhouse if he died in Middlesex or Surrey (PROB 11/11, f. 299v).
  • 17. See John Hothersall (Hotirsale) (262).
  • 18. See Richard Cely (Celi) above (262).
  • 19. See William Pratt, among laymen admitted above (262)
  • 20. William Worsley (c1435–99), dean of St Paul's from 1479. He died on 14 August 1499 and was buried in his cathedral. See DNB.
  • 21. Among deaths for 1508 (476). John Long, priest of St Bartholomew's Priory, Smithfield, requested burial in the church there and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity and 20s to the Sixty Priests' fraternity by his will of 26 June 1499, proved 12 November 1507 (PROB 11/15, f. 223r).
  • 22. A John Cowper was vicar of St Leonard Shoreditch 1481–1525 (Hennessy, p 393) but the name is common.
  • 23. William Arrowsmith, rector of St Anne and St Agnes, requested burial in the choir of his church by his will of 10 January, proved 18 January, 1506 (PROB 11/16, f. 145v).
  • 24. Among deaths for 1496 (354). Probably the Richard Wheeler, chantry priest of St Martin Outwich, who requested burial in the chancel or choir there by his will of 18 March, proved 12 April, 1496 (Guildhall MSS 9171/8, f. 124r, 9168/1, f. 12r).
  • 25. This John Cook was admitted along with a Cecily Cook below (269), and a deceased clerk and a clerk's wife of the same name are recorded under the deaths for 1507 (465, 466). Another John Cook is among admissions for 1492 (318). Two relevant individuals named John Cook are known at this time in London. One was parish clerk of St Olave Silver Street and junior master in 1501 (388); the other was clerk of St Anthony's Hospital in 1495 and 1501 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). There is no justification for Baillie's attempt to conflate the two.
  • 26. Among deaths for 1501 (394). Presumably the Robert Debenham who was parish clerk of St Mary at Hill between 1493 and 1500, on whom see H Littlehales, The medieval records of a London city church, Early English Text Society (1905), pp xix, 197–237. Probate of his will was granted to his widow Joan on 19 June [1500] (Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 155v). It is not clear whether the Robert Debenham who was parish clerk of St Nicholas Shambles in 1488 (Mc Murray, Index) is the same individual.
  • 27. Among deaths for 1495 (as Thomas Bartram) (345). A citizen and plumber, Bertram requested burial in the church of St Martin Orgar and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will (no probate) of 8 May 1495 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 90v).
  • 28. See Joan Robenet below (271).
  • 29. Katherine, wife of Thomas Betson, who appears among deaths below (275). She remarried, and (as Katherine Welbeck) requested burial with Thomas in the church of All Hallows Barking by her will of 1 December 1509, proved 14 February 1510 (PROB 11/16, f. 196v). For her family connections see K Lacey in CM Barron and AF Sutton (ed) Medieval London Widows (1994), pp 153–4.
  • 30. See Nicholas Bayley, 275.
  • 31. Admitted with John Robenet above (270). Perhaps the Joan Robenet, wife of John Robenet of St Bartholomew's Hospital, who was granted administration of her husband's will on 16 March 1498 (Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 69r); possibly also iden- tifiable with the widow of this name, whose will as a pauper was proved in 1512 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 80r).
  • 32. Probably Henry Burton, DTh at Cambridge 1466 and prior of the Augustinian canons of St Mary Overy, Southwark, from 1462 until his death on 1 January 1486 (Emden, BRUC to 1500).
  • 33. Possibly the Walter Hart (Hert) MA, of Worcester diocese, who was a fellow of Merton College Oxford c1442–55, rector of St Martin Vintry 1456 (readmitted 1457), canon of St Paul's and prebendary of Ealdstreet 1467–84 (Emden, BRL'O to 1500). However his will of 1481 was proved 31 May 1484 (PROB 11.7, f. 83r) so his death would normally have been recorded in 1484 or 1485 rather than 1486 on BR.
  • 34. Thomas Britton (Breten), ironmonger; alderman 1483–5 (Beaven, 11, 17; Thrupp, p 326). He requested burial in the church of St Mary at Hill by his will of 22 September, proved 15 November, 1485 (PROB 11/7, f. 110r).
  • 35. The citizen and draper who requested burial in the cloister of St Magnus Martyr and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 27 September, proved 14 October, 1485 (PROB 11/7, f. 121v).
  • 36. Thomas Betson, stockfishmonger and merchant of the Staple at Calais. He requested burial in the church or churchyard of All Hallows Barking if he died in London by his will of 12 June 1483, proved 12 May 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 184v). The Katherine Betson admitted with him (271) was apparently his second wife (Margaret is mentioned as his wife in 1483 when his will was compiled).
  • 37. Probably the John Thomas, mercer and common councilman for Aldersgate ward c1462 (Tucker), who requested burial in the choir of St Alban Wood Street by his will of 28 January 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 145r). His wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and an Elizabeth Thomas is also among admissions for 1466 (108), so this is probably the John Thomas admitted in that year (107).
  • 38. Perhaps the Nicholas Bailey (Bayley), gentleman, of St Botolph Aldersgate. By his will of 14 February, proved 13 May, 1486, he requested burial in the Lady Chapel there (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 49r). His third wife Margaret is mentioned in his will as a co-executor and a Margaret Bayley is among admissions for 1486 (271).
  • 39. A Lawrence Austen, citizen and barber, of St Stephen Coleman Street, requested burial in the churchyard of the above parish by his will of 14 April 1483, proved 12 May 1486 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 52v).
