184. JAMES LE BOTILLER, LE BOUTELER, LE BOUTTILLER or LE BOTELER, EARL OF ORMOND (Ermonia, Dormund, Dormond, Dormound, Ermounie or Oremound).
Writ to Thomas Wogan, the king’s escheator of Ireland. Teste, John de Cherleton, the king’s justice of Ireland, 18 February, 12 Edward III.
TIPPERARY. Inq. taken at Ardemaill, 23 March, 12 Edward III.
Thurles in Ely. The manor (full extent given) with the grange of Hyncheaule, including a chapel, 60a. land at Drumgallan and Moyniffir, and 280a. in Hyncheaule, held of the king in chief by service of 10l. 10s. royal service when scutage runs &c., and doing suit at the county [-court] of Typerarie monthly. In the manor is a chamber, a chapel, a kitchen of stone walls [and] covered with shingle, a bakehouse with a stone wall and covered with straw, of no value because no one wishes to rent them, and they are in need of great maintenance, if they ought to be maintained.

Corketen [or Corketeny]. Two [or ten] knights’ fees held by John Purcell for 4l. of royal service when scutage runs, a sparrowhawk yearly, and doing suit at the court.
Kilruss. Half a carucate of land held by John Droul [or Druhill] for 2s. yearly rent.

Monchark [or Moykarig]. A knight’s fee held by Rosina Samlesbiry [or Samnesbury] and Richard Mancel [or Moncel] for 10s. royal service &c. and suit.
Lyskeryn [or Lyskenyn]. A knight’s fee held by Thomas Cantewell for 10s. royal service &c. and suit.
Rathmaugh [or Rathmanagh]. A knight’s fee held by Robert Wyte [or le White] for 10s. royal service &c. and suit.
[Moyrakerân.] Half a knight’s fee held by Maurice Meche [or Mithe], William Casse and John Droull [or Druhyll] for 10s. royal service &c. and suit; and the said Maurice renders 6s. 8d. yearly for the same without suit.
Scran [or Sythan]. A knight’s fee held by William Broun for 10s. royal service &c., 20s. rent, and suit.
Moyananrech [or Moyananreff]. A knight’s fee [or two carucates of land] held by Thomas Broun for 10s. [or 15s.] royal service &c., half a mark yearly rent, and suit.
Le Brytag’ [or le Bretage]. A carucate of land held by Thomas Laffan for 6s. royal service &c., two and a half marks rent, and suit.
Kilcoge. A carucate [or two carucates] of land held by Thomas Laffan for 8s. royal service without suit.
Lyscahill. A carucate and a half of land held by Simon Wyth [or Albz] for 36s. 6d. [or 42s. 8d.] yearly with suit.
Rathchall [or Rathcalle]. Half a carucate of land held by Thomas Laffan for 2s. yearly rent with suit.
Agall [or Athgale]. Half a knight’s fee held by Lady Beatrice [Purcell] and Laurence Cantuel [or Cantewell] for a goshawk on Whitsunday or 5s., without suit.
Lysdevelyn [or Lysdyvelyn]. A carucate of land held by Edmund son of John Stapilton for 2s. rent without suit.
Bullourishil [or Bolourishill]. A carucate of land held by the abbot of Ruy [or Ogheny] for a mark rent with suit.
Hynclaghyn [or Inchelathn]. A carucate of land held by William son of Gerald for a mark rent without suit.
Lysduff. Half a carucate of land held by Edmund Cantewel for 10s. [or 36s.] rent.
Thurles. Two knights’ fees held by the burgesses in their burgages for 22l. 17s. 2d. and each does suit at the hundred [court].
Begestown [Villa Bege] [or Bekyston]. A knight’s fee held by Robert Purcel for 10s. royal service without suit.
Balyhaghil [or Balyhathill]. The burgesses used to render eight marks yearly [or render 10 1/2 marks], but now only 20s. in time of peace and nothing in time of war because of the Irish.
Fetmothan [or Fymothan]. The burgesses render to the lord of Thurles two marks 22d. in time of peace and nothing in time of war.
Rents of free tenancies in decay:—
Tholaghneryne. Three carucates of land held by the heirs of Maurice le Bryt, which Henry le Blound held, by service of 12s. royal service when scutage runs &c.; and a knight’s fee in Tolaghneryne and 32a. in Gartynghody (?) and Clontynlan, whence they used to render 10l. 7s. 6d. with suit of court, but now nothing can be levied, because the land is waste.
Moreye (?). 60a. sometime of Richard de Midia, whence they used to render 2s. royal service &c. and 40s. yearly rent, but now nothing &c.
Cloncath. 60a. land which Henry de Midia sometime held, whence they used to render 2s. royal service &c., and a mark rent, but now nothing &c.
Baliwyssyn. Half a knight’s fee, which Roger de Cantuel held, whence they used to render ten marks and a half, but now nothing &c.
Balacaig (?). 60a. land which Thomas Cantuel holds, whence he used to render two marks yearly rent, but now nothing &c.
Moyyenne. A carucate of land which Richard de Midia holds, whence he used to render four marks yearly, but now nothing &c.
Cappathedeon [or Capahedian]. A carucate and a half of land which Miles de Burgo holds [or which is in the lord’s wardship and held] for 6s. royal service, and he used to render seven marks yearly, but now nothing &c.
James his son, aged 7 years on the feast of All Saints, 11 Edward III, is his next heir.

Ardemaill. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief, doing suit at the county [court] of Typerarie every month.

Balyyssan. A knight’s fee held by William Haket for 20s. royal service when scutage runs, and suit at the court of Ardemaill every fifteen [days].
Thenam. 60a. [or half a carucate of] land held by James Vall [or de Valle] by suit of court only.
Huddeston. Two carucates of land held by Gilbert Chamberleyn for 5s. royal service, and suit of court.
[Ardemaill.] Eight carucates of land held by the burgesses there in their burgages, rendering twenty-two marks yearly and doing suit at the hundred (court) there every fifteen (days).
Kencathiran. Two carucates of land held of the archbishop of Cassel, doing suit at the said archbishop’s court at Cassel every fifteen (days).

Le Britag with Karkeul. The manor (extent given), including a turbary called Molyngargan, 78a. arable at Belunok (?), a carucate of land held by Moriarth Mcbrene’ in Eyn, 20a. land in Balibrogan which Lorcan MacKegh holds, 7a. arable in Milcroft by Karkeul, and 7a. land lying waste by Wymshill, all worth nothing in time of war, held of the king in chief, doing suit at the county (court) of Lymmyr(ick) every month.

Rathjurdan. A knight’s fee held by Jordan Mareschal for 10s. royal (service) &c. and suit of court.

Lidin (?). A knight’s fee held by Thomas de Rys for 10s. royal (service) &c. rendering 59s. yearly, and suit of court.
Carrikouir. A knight’s fee held by David de Burgo for 5s. royal service &c. and suit of court.
Baliceyhane (?). A carucate of land held by Thomas fitz Rys the younger, for 12s. rent and suit &c.
Obin (?). Half a carucate of land held by Adam fitz Stevyn and John Wynslou (?) for 1d. rent.
Cathirlow. The tenants have common in the Red Moor and render 2s. yearly.
Karkeul. The burgesses hold twenty carucates of land in their burgages, and render 10l. 10s. 11d. yearly, from which are deducted 20s. rent yearly to the bishop of Emly (Imly) for two carucates of land which are held of them in their burgages.

TIPPERARY. Inq. taken at Casseyll, 25 March, 12 Edward III.
Moyalui or Moyalwy. The manor (extent given), including a stone tower roofed with shingles, and a wood of 400a. called Hurle, extended at nothing because it is in the hand of the Irish and felons there, held of the king in chief without rent or service.

Le Clochir. A knight’s fee held by Stephen Marys, doing suit at the lord’s court there every fifteen (days) for all service.
Rathkenan. 100a. land held by Richard Balunchard for 6s. 8d. royal service &c. and suit.
Kyllog. 60a. land held by John Beche for 40s. rent and suit of court, and if there shall be war nothing can be levied.
[Moyalwy.] The burgesses hold 200a. land in their burgages for 4l. 16d. rent yearly, but if there shall be war nothing can be levied, and each does suit at the lord’s hundred (court) there.

The manor with the grange of Clonleyn (extent given with names of tenants), including a castle surrounded with five towers, a hall, a house beyond the gate, and a kitchen with stone walls roofed with shingle, 40a. pasture called ‘Clonmayn,’ and a wood called ‘le Dirre,’ held of the king in chief, doing suit for the same at the county[court] of Typerarie every month.

Fynmagh (?). A ‘teod’ which the heirs of Nicholas Creke held for 40s. royal service &c., but now nothing.
Loskerosky. A knight’s fee which the heirs of Philip Marrys held, and they used to render 10s. royal service &c.
Rathbrobenagh. Five carucates of land, which they held rendering five marks yearly and suit, and now nothing; and a carucate of land there for which they used to render five marks yearly, and now nothing.
Kyllenyn. Two carucates of land which the heirs of Edmund de Hursse hold, and they used to render yearly 2s. royal service &c. with suit, but now nothing.
Kylledegan. A carucate and a half of land, which used to render 1d. (?) royal service, and 100s. rent yearly, but now nothing.
Kapagh cloragh. Three carucates and a half of land which Robert Scorhals holds, and they used to render thence 14s. royal service &c. and 11l. 13s. 4d. yearly with suit, but now nothing.
Carrik and Kyllonan. A carucate of land and three quarters which the heirs of Fromund de Norhamton hold, and they used to render thence 6l. 6s. 8d. without suit, and now nothing.

Ourmund. The sergeanty which Maur[ice] Omagh holds, whence he used to render 40s., and now nothing.

Twyford. The manor (extent given), held jointly as above of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee; which manor the said James and Eleanor demised at fee farm to a certain Robert de Wythull for his life, with the king’s licence, rendering yearly to them 16l.
Great Lynford. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held jointly as above of the earl of Oxford by service of a knight’s fee, and suit at his court of Wytcherche.
He held no other lands &c. in cos. Bedford and Buckingham.

Wytheton or Wetheton. The manor held jointly as above, by the grant of James Laweles, of Sir Henry, earl of Lancaster, by fealty, and by service of 13s. 4d. yearly.
He held no other lands or tenements on this side Trent.
Heir unknown, as he was born in Ireland.
TIPPERARY. Extent, made at Cassell before the chancellor of Ireland and others on Monday the morrow of the Close of Easter, 12 Edward III.
Carrikmacgriffyn. The manor (extent given, with names of tenants), including a wasted castle on the side of Waterford, pleas &c. of the hundred, and the following free tenants:—
Monyndath. 40a. land held by Anastac(ia?) le Brit, rendering half a mark yearly.
Taghemel. Land held by William son of John son of Nicholas, of the manor of Taghemel, rendering a mark yearly.

Le Nenagh. The manor (extent given with some names of tenants), including a castle, a pasture called Clonmayn, a wood of 40a. called ‘le Dirre,’ and the following places, the spelling of most of which is very doubtful:—
Cloncalgu, Balianyn, Forgenaill, Loghmylath, Loghpassan, Loghorne, Balicodihan, Baliethe, Derneslyn, Fynnach, Logloske, half a ‘teod’ in Moydriff, half a carucate of land in Clonynes, rent from Dounlawe (?), Rathbregnath and Goeristoun, two carucates of land in Killouyn held by Edmund Husee for 2s. royal service &c. and suit of court, ‘le heth’ of Loghdonssk, Killer, Gralath ………… the Okenedys of Ermon ought to render 20l. rent for their (lands) in Ermon but now (render) nothing because they are at war, Balinore and Killadermot used to pay fourteen marks yearly but now nothing because they are amongst Okenedys in Ermon, and rents from the Okenedys of Clandownyl, Kylnaldir, Thomlegh, and from 12 carucates of land held by Reymund de Burgo in Burgesleffbogy (?).
TIPPERARY. Extent similarly made on Monday the morrow of the Close of Easter, 12 Edward III.
Thurlys. The manor (extent given as in the inq. of 23 March above) including a castle and chapel, and a pasture called ‘le Corragh,’ with the variations there given within square brackets, some omissions and the following additions:—
Lanagh. 160a. land, whereof the lord gave to Walter the clerk 100a. for life, and to Adam Blakebourne 20a. for life.
Gorkel. 80a. land.
Incheauly. 280a. land which Theobald Haket holds to farm for 10l.
Corragh. Two carucates of land which John Druhill holds, rendering 5s. and suit of court at Incheauly.
Balyhathyll. A parcel of land called Montyng, rendering 11s.
Balyherk. Three carucates and 20a. of land, which Adam de Barry holds for life, for keeping the castle of Roscree.
Cloncath. Half a carucate of land which Thomas Laffan holds, rendering 13s. 4d.
Tolaghnerine. A knight’s fee which Lady Beatrice Purcell holds for a mark royal service, and used to render …. which rent the lord granted to Hugh Purcell for life.
Balyussyn. Half a knight’s fee which John Cantewell holds, rendering ……
Balymyagh. A carucate of land which John Oge Purcell holds for life, and it used to render four marks and a half.
Clonmor. Three carucates of land which John Mor Purcell holds, and they used to render 26s. 8d. yearly.
Writ of certiorari to the chancellor of Ireland, commanding him to send to the chancery of England the extents made in Ireland of the lands, knights’ fees and advowsons &c. that were of the said James le Botiller, on the petition of Eleanor his wife for her dower, 3 March, 13 Edward III. Teste, Edward duke of Cornwall.
Extent or summary of lands &c. in Ireland which were of the said James, earl of Oremound, which he held of the king in chief, made by the king’s command and returned into his chancery, whereof Eleanor his wife seeks to be dowered, viz.:—
Le Nenagh. The castle and manor &c., besides lands wasted and at war.
Thurles. The castle and manor with the borough &c.
Ardmayl. The manor.
Carrykmacgriffyn. The manor.
Moyaluy. The manor.
Britage and Karkeul. The manor.
Clonleynan. The manor.
Waterford. 10l. yearly rent from the farm of the city, which the king granted to him and his heirs by charter to hold under the name and honour of earl of Oremound for ever, which charter was exhibited in the chancery.
Lands wasted and at war in the manor of ‘le Nenagh,’ viz.:—
Le Feth used to bear four marks yearly and now nothing.
Ermon. The Okenediis of Ermon ought to bear 20l. yearly for divers lands they hold, but now nothing because they are at war.
Ballinore and Killadermot used to bear fourteen marks, and now nothing because it is amid Okenediis and Ermon, and they are at war.
Writ of dedimus potestatem to John de Aulton to receive the attorneys of the said Eleanor, for receiving her dower, 4 June, 13 Edward III. Teste, Edward duke of Cornwall.
