196. JOAN, LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN WAKE.
Petition by the said Joan to the king’s treasurer; whereas she obtained a writ of dower against William le fiz Aleyn, of a third part of the manor of Wysby Hadyngton, co. Lincoln, and he vouched to warrant Thomas son and heir of John Wake, in the king’s wardship, who warranted by the king’s command; wherefore it was awarded that she should have to the value out of the king’s seisin; and because the king has nothing of the heir’s inheritance except the rent of Skeldynghopp in co. Lincoln, a writ of seisin issued, to which John Bygot who holds the manor answered that the escheator requires a warrant from the exchequer so that he may allow seisin. (French.)
Memorandum. The said Joan was assigned her dower in the rent of Skeldyngh(opp) in Trinity Term, in the year 29. ro. 96.
Endorsed. Let her sue a writ in the chancery to the justices of the bench to cause the record and process to come &c.

LINCOLN. Joan late the wife of John Wake seeks against William son of Alan a third part of the manor of Suthicham, and of a messuage and 6a. land in Est Depyng, and of the manor of Hadyngton and Whisseby, as dower. And the said William calls to warrant Thomas son and heir of John Wake, whose body is in the wardship of the said Joan, and his lands in that of the king in the said county and in co. Cumberland, and he proffers three writings of the said John Wake:—one testifying that he granted to the same William the manor of Hadyngton and all his tenants in Whysceby, to hold to him &c. for ever, rendering a rose yearly, saving the king’s foreign service; another testifying that he quit-claimed to the said William all his right in the manor of Southycham, to hold to him &c. for ever, rendering a red rose yearly; and the third testifying that he granted to the said William a messuage and 6a. land in Est Depyng, which Maud Benet formerly held of Sir Baldwin, father of the same John, to hold to him &c. for ever, rendering a rose yearly; and he bound his heirs to warrant the same. Wherefore it was considered that the said William should hold in peace, and that the said Joan should have of the heir’s land in the king’s wardship in co. Lincoln to the value &c. because all the lands which the king has of that inheritance &c. in Cumberland are assigned to her for her dower &c. against other tenants &c. as appears elsewhere.
Writ of certiorari to Thomas son of Eustace and Henry de Baiocis, reciting the substance of the above record, and commanding them to extend the manors and tenements which the said Joan thus seeks in dower, and send the extents without delay, 6 Feb. 32 Edw. I.

Rose, aged 30 and more, and Alice, aged 24 and more, daughters of John Torold of Hadham his brother, are his next heirs.

[DERBY.] Inq. Monday the feast of St. Margaret, 32 Edw. I.
Longeford. A capital messuage &c. 120a. land, 10a. meadow, 5 bovates of land in ‘Le Wodehuses’ which are held in bondage, 3 1/2 bovates of land in Malvurton (?), 6 bovates of land in Bobindon, cottagers rendering 20s. 4d. yearly, a park and a water-mill, held of the bishop of Chester by service of a knight’s fee and two appearances at the court of the said bishop at Lich(field) yearly.

Barleburg. The manor with its members (extent given) held of Sir Robert de Stotevile by service of 5 knights’ fees and doing suit at his court at Ekinton. The presentation to the church belongs to the said John and Walter de Gousil alternately, and the first presentation to the said John.

Ethelastone. A moiety (extent given), including pastures called ‘la Haye’ and ‘Tenbrok,’ and free tenants in Quikeshulle, Prestwode, Caltone and Stantone rendering 22s. yearly, held of Edmund baron of Stafford by service of a moiety of a little knight’s fee and doing suit at his court of Stafford every three weeks.
Heir as above.
Writ of plenius certiorari, because the above inquisition makes no mention whether the said John held the manor of Kilwaldmersh of the king as of the crown or of any honour or escheat now in his hand, or whether he ought to find the horse &c. at his own charges or the king’s, or what lands he gave to the said Nicholas and Katherine, or whether by the king’s licence or not, 15 Oct. 32 Edw. I.
[DERBY.] Inq. Wednesday after All Saints, 32 Edw. I.
Kenewaldemerche. He held the manor of the king in chief as of the honour of Peverel now in the king’s hand, and not of the crown, by service of finding a man, with a horse, sack &c. as above, for forty days at his own charges, and doing suit &c. as above. In the summer before he went to the king in Scotland there was an agreement (prelocucio) made between the said John and Sir Henry de Braylesford that their sons and heirs should marry their daughters respectively, so that after the said espousals the said John should give to Nicholas his son and heir with Katherine daughter of the said Henry 20l. of land in the manors of Kenewoldemerche and Barleburgh to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, and accordingly such a charter was made by the said John, but seisin was never given to the said Nicholas and Katherine in the life of the said John, who died seised thereof, and the charter is therefore void. The jurors of the first inquisition were simple persons not cognizant of English laws and customs, to whom it appeared that the charter was sufficient without seisin delivered, whereas it was of no value.
Writ of certiorari to the escheator to make inquisition whether the said John held anything in his bailiwick of the king in chief as of the crown, or not, and if the honour of Peverel was ever of the ancient demesne of the crown, or not, 28 March, 33 Edw. I.
DERBY. Inq. taken at Derby on Thursday before Easter, 33 Edw. I.
The said John held nothing of the king in chief as of the crown in the bailiwick, and the said honour was at no time of the ancient demesne of the crown, of England.
C. Edw. I. File 111. (15.)
203. WALTER DE WYGHTHULL.
Writ, 4 Oct. 32 Edw. I.
OXFORD. Inq. 11 Nov. 32 Edw. I.
Wighthull. A messuage with fishpond &c., 160a. arable, 8a. meadow, 3a. several pasture, rents of free tenants and tenants in villenage (named), and pleas &c. of court, held of the king in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee as of the honour of St. Valery, now in the king’s hand.
John his son, aged 39 and more, is his next heir.
C. Edw. I. File 111. (16.)
204. ROBERT DE BELLO CAMPO.
Writ, 24 Nov. 32 Edw. I.
BEDFORD. Inq. 21 Jan. 32 Edw. I.
Luton alias Luyton. 44a. arable, 3a. meadow, a several pasture, a moiety of a water-mill with the fishery, (a moiety?) of a market, pleas &c. 12 free tenants and 2 customers, held of Cecily de Bello Campo, as by fee tail to him and the heirs of his body, of the gift and enfeoffment of the said Cecily, rendering her a pair of gilt spurs yearly, with reversion to her and her heirs; and a messuage held of Robert son of Aylward Bissop by socage, rendering 19d. yearly and 1lb. of wax.
John de Bello Campo of Sumersete, lord of Hache, aged 30 and more, is his next heir.
CAMBRIDGE. Inq. 10 Jan. 32 Edw. I. (defaced).
Dulingham. The manor (extent given) held of Cecily de Bello Campo of her gift and enfeoffment by fee tail, viz. to him and the heirs of his body, with reversion to her and her heirs; and it is held of the abbot of St. Wandregesil’s, Normandy, freely without any yearly service.
He held nothing as of fee simple.
He died without heir of his body, and the reversion of this manor belongs to the aforesaid Cecily. John de Bello Campo his brother, aged 30, is his next heir.
Writ of scire facias to the escheator, reciting the substance of the inquisition concerning the lands in Luton, and whereas by inspection of the rolls of the chancery it appears that by letters patent the king gave licence to the said Robert to retain to him and his heirs for ever certain lands &c. which he had there of the grant of Cecily de Bello Campo his mother, he is to warn the said Cecily and John de Bello Campo, the heir, to be present before the king and council at York on the quinzaine of Easter next, 30 Jan. 32 Edw. I. Endorsed by the escheator that he had warned the parties accordingly.
BEDFORD. Inq. 20 March, 32 Edw. I.
Luton. Having viewed the writings made between the said Cecily and Robert, and the king’s letters patent, the jurors say that the said Cecily enfeoffed the said Robert to hold to him and the heirs of his body, by service to her of a pair of gilt spurs yearly for her life, and after her death to render 1lb. cummin yearly to her heirs, with reversion to her and her heirs, and he was thus in seisin until the day of his death; but whether by reason of the king’s confirmation he did homage to the king or not is unknown to the jurors, because they have had no previous knowledge of letters patent of this kind.
C. Edw. I. File 111. (17.)
205. FULK DE ARCHIACO.
Mandate under the privy seal to the chancellor to send the inquests made touching Aymar Darchiak, in respect of the delivery of the lands &c. whereof Fouk Darchiak died seised, of the inheritance of Mabel mother of the said Aymar, daughter and one of the heirs of William le Fort, with her pourparty of the lands which Maud de Kyme held, which lands &c. were taken into the king’s hand because the said Aymar was an alien; and if the inquests are not already taken, to issue a writ under the great seal forthwith, 6 May, 32 Edw. I. (French.)

Aymer (Adomarus) de Archiaco, aged 25, is son and next heir of the said Mabel.
Maud de Kyme, deceased, late the wife of William de Fortibus, father of the said Mabel, was dowered whilst she lived of a third part of the whole manor, and held the same of the said Fulk and Mabel as dower, the reversion whereof belongs to the said Mabel’s heirs.
C. Edw. I. File 111 (18.)
