EDUCATION.

In 1819 there were two schools, one of which, supported by voluntary contributions, had 20 children and one paid teacher. (fn. 1) Both schools appear to have closed before 1825. (fn. 2) In 1861 a Sunday school was held in a cottage adjoining the rectory (fn. 3) and in 1862 a church day school was built south-east of the church. By 1903 there were 72 children on the books, with two teachers. A Sunday school and an evening continuation school were held on the premises. (fn. 4) Numbers fell from 66 in 1905 to 25 in 1935 and 14 in 1968 when the school was closed, the children going to West Monkton and North Petherton. (fn. 5) In 1985 the building was used as a village hall.
