Entry 'The University of Oxford was moderately rebuked by the College in a letter written by the President and sealed with the common seal, because Simon Ludford, an apothecary, and David Lawghton, a copper smith, both illiterate men, had received degrees in medicine.' (Text of letter given in Annals.)

Entry 'that ignorant and self-seeking Ludford, when he realised that all hope had gone for him of obtaining a degree of doctorate of medicine at Oxford, ... went to Cambridge to attempt by similar trickery to cheat the Cambridge authorities.' So three of the Cambridge men of the College (Caius, Wendy and Huicke) wrote to the Senate of Cambridge warning them against Ludford, 'an inexperienced and ignorant fellow, nevertheless vainglorious, and arrogant'.

Entry 'In a special Comitia Simon Ludford of Bedford, Doctor of Medicine of Oxford, was admitted a Fellow, amd paid £13 6s. 8d. as his admission fee and for a fine which the President Doctor Huicke had on 15 February 1553 assessed at £10. Because however he paid willingly and promptly, the College returned £3 6s. 8d. to him.'
