MOULDINGS IN HUNTINGDONSHIRE.
The details of stone mouldings reproduced to a uniform scale on pp. 312–3 are selected from the Commission's Records. They include all periods from the middle of the 11th century to the early part of the 16th century, and particular attention may be called to the advanced character of the forms at Great Paxton Church which is undoubtedly of Pre-Conquest date.
Although, as a whole, dated examples are rare in the County, the erection of the chancel at Fen Stanton is recorded on the gravestone of the Rector as 1345–52 and confirms the date of the mouldings illustrated. A close comparison of detail is also afforded by the Abbot's Gatehouse at Peterborough Cathedral which was erected c. 1303. Mouldings of about the same period—late 13th- and early 14th-century—are strongly represented in Huntingdonshire.
The illustrations given are all taken from parish churches with the exception of those of Ramsey Abbey and Buckden Palace. Those at Ramsey Abbey also include, to a smaller scale, an elevation of the E. wall of mid 13th-century date which is especially interesting.
