Supplement to the Notes

The purpose of this Index is to give references to modern editions of authors cited or used by Stow; and to Collections and Calendars, where documents so used or cited may be found. I have endeavoured, where possible, to give the actual source of Stow's information. But it must not be assumed that he had always made use of the authority here given. Thus whilst it is certain that he had used the Liber Albus and Liber Custumarum, it is not so clear that he was acquainted with the Liber de Antiquis Legibus. The references are unavoidably imperfect; some are difficult to trace; some come from sources still unprinted and uncalendared. Stow had, moreover, made use of manuscripts which seem now to have perished; such are his Liber S. Mariae Overy and Liber Woodbridge. For the minor religious foundations in London, the editors of the Monasticon Anglicanum could often add nothing to the information preserved in the Survey.

When the sources of any statement have been discussed in the Notes, they are not here repeated. Whenever possible, references to mediaeval historians are to the editions in the Rolls Series. The following abbreviations are used both in the Notes and in this Index.

Dr. Sharpe has kindly allowed me to consult his MS. calendar for 1; its interest is, however, chiefly for general English history. The early publication of a calendar to K, which was used by Stow, and is of great value for London history, is much to be desired.)
