Are there terrars taken of all ye estates of ye Petty Canons; are such terrars after examination annexed to ye leases when renew'd; are ye leases and terrars duly registered; do they keep a booke of entrys of their proceedings in relation to leases and other affairs, for ye direction of their successors?

10. Have all ye Petty Canons houses to dwell in as they had formerly; if any have not, what is ye cause of it? Do they that have houses dwell in them, or who else dwells in any of them; are they all kept in good repair; who is bound to repair them; is any allowance made by ye Dean and Chapter to such of ye Petty Canons as have no houses towards ye hiring of convenient houses or lodgings?

11. Did any of ye Petty Canons, Vicars Choral, or any of the Inferiour Officers of ye Church come into their places by giving or promising anything directly or indirectly for them? Do any of them frequent alehouses, tavourns, or playhouses, or are commonly reported to be guilty of any notorious crime, as profane swearing, cursing, perjury, whoredom, drunkenness, or ye like?

12. Are any of ye Petty Canons, Vicars Choral, or any of ye inferior members of this Church turbulent, contentious, or unquiet among their Brethren?

13. How many Virgers are there; are they chosen every year; do each of them execute their office in their own person; are they diligent in their duty, and do they waite upon ye Lorde Bishop, Dean, and Dignitarys, and Prebendarys of ye Church whensoever they come to their Stalls and back again? Do they open ye Quire and Chapel doors as soon as ye bell begins to ring for prayers, and shut them againe when prayers are ended? Do they keep ye seats and pavement in ye Quire and Chapell and side Isles clean, and free from dust and dirt? Do they take care that none walk, or make a noise in the Side Isles, nor behave themselves irreverently in ye Quire during ye time of Divine Service? Do any of them demand money of those that come to prayers for opening ye pews, or do they refuse to open them except money be given them for it?

14. How many Bellringers are there; doth each of them execute his office in his own person; do they ring ye bell every day exactly one quarter of an hour before Morning and Evening Prayer begin in ye Quire and Chapel; do they open ye Church doors every morning before ye bell tolls to prayers, and shut them againe after prayers are ended?

15. Is there a Generall Chapter of all ye Petty Canons, Vicars Choral, and ye other officers of ye Church called every Saturday? Do ye Cardinals there give notice to ye Dean or one deputed by him how often any of ye Petty Canons or Vicars Choral were absent or came late to prayers, or went out before they were ended without speciall leave, or did not performe ye duty there required of them, and what other faults were committed by any of ye said officers of ye Church upon any day of that weeke?

16. Do ye Petty Canons, Vicars Choral, Choristers, and all other inferior officers of this Church, pay due respect and obedience to ye Dean and Chapter in all matters relating to their severall offices?

17. Do you know any other things, besides those which are mentioned under ye severall heads of ye foregoing articles, that are meet to be enquired into and detected, relating to ye Orders, Government, and Discipline of this Church?

18. Do you know anything in ye order, discipline, and constitution of this Church that needs new Injunctions or Statutes, or explanations of ye same, and meaning of ye present Injunctions and Statutes now in force?

Injunctions given by Edmund, Lord Bishop of London, in his primary visitation of the cathedral church of Saint Paul, begun on the 12th day of May, in the year of our Lord 1724.

1. Whereas there hath grown an evil custom of great numbers of persons walking and talking in ye body of ye Cathedral Church during ye time of Divine Service in ye Quire, and more especially on ye Lord's Day, to ye great disturbance of ye said service, and ye profanation of ye house of God and ye offence of many serious and good Christians: We do enjoin and require that ye Dean and Residentiarys give strict charge to ye several officers belonging to ye Church ye they use their utmost dilligence to prevent ye same for ye future, and that they, ye said Dean and Residentiaryes, if need be, cause ye Canons and other laws which have been made against such offenders to be put in execution, particularly ye 18th Canon, whereby it is provided, That none other man, woman, or child, of what calling soever, shall disturbe ye Service or Sermon by walking, or talking, or any other way; and ye statute made in ye first year of King William and Queen Mary, chap. 18th, whereby it is enacted, that if any person or persons shall willingly and of purpose malitiously and contemptuously come into any Cathedral or Parish Church, and disquiet or disturbe ye same, such person or persons, upon proof thereof before any Justice of ye peace, by two or more sufficient witnesses, shall find two or more securities to be bound by recognizance in ye penal sum of 50li; and in default of such securityes shall be committed to prison, there to remain till ye next generall or quarter sessions, and upon conviction of ye said offence, at ye said generall or quarter sessions, shall suffer ye pain and penalty of 20li to ye use of ye King and Queens Majestys, their heirs and successors. And we also enjoyn and require yt ye officers of ye Church do, on ye day on which such offence shall be committed, signify ye names and places of abode of such persons as they shall observe to behave themselves disorderly and contrary to ye tenor of ye said laws to ye Dean, or in his absence to ye Senior Residentiary, in order to their being prosecuted and punished according to law. And to ye end that persons piously and religiously disposed may not be discouraged from attending Divine Service in ye Quire by ye Virgers refusing to open ye seats untill money be given them, We do expressly forbid ye same, and enjoyn ye Dean and Residentiarys to take especiall care yt no such thing be practised by ye Virgers, and to punish every one who by their own observations, or upon ye complaints of others, shall be found guilty of it, by inflicting a mulct of 10s. at ye least for every such offence; and if any of them be found frequently offending, to be turned out of his place for persisting in so unwarrantable a practice.

2. And whereas it is appointed by an Injunction of Dr. Henry Compton, (fn. 28) Bishop of London, our predecessor in this See, yt ye publicke Prayers in ye Quire shall begin every day at 10 of ye clocke in ye morning, and three in ye afternoon, except on ye Lord's Day, on which it is ordered by ye said Injunction yt they begin at nine of ye clocke in ye morning, which times have been found by experience to be inconvenient: We do enjoyne and require that from henceforth ye public Prayers in ye morning do begin at a quarter of an hour before 10, and in ye evening a quarter after three, both on ye Lord's day, and on all other days.

3. Whereas also divers wholesom Orders and Injunctions were made by our said predecessor, one particularly, for obliging ye Dignatarys and Prebendarys punctually to discharge their severall turns of preaching, and in case they cannot, by reason of sickness or other just impediment, performe that duty in their own persons, to oblige them to give three weeks' notice to ye Dean and President of ye Chapter of ye person substituted by them; and another, for obliging ye Minor Canons and Vicars Choral to due attendance on ye service of ye Church; and another, yt one of ye Cardinals do weekly instruct ye Choristers in ye Church Catechism; all which are inforced by mulets and penalties to be inflicted on ye offenders, as by ye said Injunctions doth more fully appear: now We do enjoyne and require ye said Dignatarys, Prebendarys, Cardinals, Minor Canons, and Vicars Chorall strictly to observe ye said Injunctions as they are respectively concerned in them, and ye said mulcts and penalties to be duly inflicted in case of neglect: with this variation as to ye Minor Canons and Vicars who are absent without leave, or come late, yt ye penalty thereof, instead of two pence (as is appointed by ye said Injunctions (fn. 29) ) shall henceforth be four pence, toties quoties; and as to ye Cardinals neglecting ye duty of catechising, that ye penalty for every such neglect be two shillings and sixpence, toties quoties; and with regard to ye duty of preaching, We further enjoyn that neither ye Dean nor ye President of ye Chapter admit any excuse from preaching in person, but such only as shall be canonical and reasonable, nor allow of any person but such as they shall know to be of good character and ability to supply the turns of those who shall offer a canonicall excuse from preaching in person. And yt ye orders relating to ye attendance of ye members of ye Quire and Catechism of ye Choristers may obtain their full effect, We further enjoyne and require yt one of ye Cardinals do, on ye first day of every month, bring to ye Dean or Residentiary who is in residence a list of ye names of those members who are to aftend ye service of ye Church for that month, and that on ye last day of every month (unless it shall happen to be Sunday, and in such case on ye day before) a Chapter shall be held at which all ye said members, together with ye Choristers and Virgers, shall appear, and ye rolles of absence shall be given in, and ye mulct incurred by any of them shall then be directed to be stopped [out of] ye payments due for that month and applyed according to the Injunction heretofore given by our said predecessor; and also, at ye said Chapters, inquiry shall be particularly made whether ye Choristers have been regularly catechized by one of ye Cardinals, and no excuse shall be admitted for ye omission of that duty, unless it shall appear yt in every weeke of such omission leave hath been given by ye Dean or Residentiary then in residence for this duty being performed by some other of ye Minor Canons, and yt it hath been performed accordingly.

And whereas ye Dignitaries, Prebendarys, and other Members of ye said Cathedral are sworn at their respective admission to ye observance of ye Statutes of ye same, therefore, to ye end they may have free recourse to ye said Statutes, in order to ye knowledge of their duty and conscientious discharge thereof, We do enjoin and require that ye Booke or Bookes of Statutes, as also ye Injunctions formerly made, and now in force, to be kept in ye Chapter House safely locked up under ye custody of ye Chapter Cleark; and that these our Injunctions be safely entered in ye booke in which ye Injunctions of our predecessors have been usually entered, and that ye Originals now delivered under our Episcopall Seal be deposited and preserved in ye Archives of ye said Church; and also, that all and every Member who is sworn to ye observation of ye Statutes, as aforesaid, be permitted freely to consult and peruse ye said Booke or Bookes of Statutes and Injunctions, and to take copyes thereof, if they please, so far as they are respectively concerned, but that ye booke or books be not lent out to any person, or carryed from ye Chapter House to any other place, without express leave of ye Dean, or, in his absence, of ye Residentiary in Residence.

An injunction given by Edmund Lord Bishop of London in his primary visitation of the cathedral church of Saint Paul begun in yE 12th day of May in ye year of our Lord 1724.

Whereas ye Dignitarys and Prebendarys of this Cathedral Church do enjoy separate estates as annexed to their severall Dignities and Prebends, which estates they are enabled to demise by lease, from time to time, for one and twenty years or three lives, without ye confirmation or privity of ye Bishop or Dean or Chapter or any other person or persons whatsoever, but have no public office in which to enter and register such leases, and ye terriers hereto annexed, together with ye Buttings and Boundings of severall lands and estates: and ye Counterparts of such Leases remaining privately in their own hands, and, upon their deaths, being ofttimes mislaid or lost, neither ye Bishop, who is patron of all ye said Dignities and Prebends, (ye Deanery excepted), nor ye persons who succeed them, have any knowledge of ye true situation and extent of such estates, nor of ye covenants contained in ye leases made thereof by their predecessors: and whereas ye Leasee, through ye benefit of such privacy, may not only sometimes be able to obtain covenants disadvantageous to ye Church, but may also with more security neglect such covenants as are in favor of ye Church, and have greater opportunitys to convert ye estates of ye Church which happened to be intermixed with or adjoining to their own private property, and it is to be feared some of ye estates belonging to Dignities and Prebends have, chiefly by this omission, been totally lost: therefore, for ye preventing and removing these great mischiefs, and to do what in us lyes towards preserving ye patrimony of ye Church for ye time to come, we do hereby strictly enjoyn and require that all and every of ye said Dignitarys and Prebendaries do cause to be entered at length ye present Lease or Leases thereof, together with ye Terriers, and Abuttings and Boundings, in a Booke to be provided by our Registrar for that purpose, within three months after ye publication of this our Injunction, upon pain of contempt and of forfeiting their allowance of bread money, and all other payments whatsoever which are usually made by ye Dean and Residentiarys, for so long time as ye said Leases shall remain unregistered contrary to ye tenor of this our Injunction. And we do hereby order that ye bread money and such other payments which shall be due at Michaelmas next be suspended till after ye expiration of ye said three months. And we do farther enjoyn and require that all Leases which shall hereafter be granted of ye separate estates aforesaid by any of ye Dignitarys and Prebendarys, together with Terrars annexed, and ye Buttings and Boundings of ye estate, be by them entered in like manner within three months after ye ensealing thereof, upon pain of contempt and of forfeiting ye usuall allowance of bread money, and other payments, as is before mentioned in ye last article; for which entries no more shall be demanded than six shillings and eight pence for every Lease. And to ye end it may appear from time to time whether any new Lease hath been granted, and yet not duly registered, as aforesaid, Wee do further enjoyne and require that ye Dean and Residentiarys do not pay, or cause to be paid, to any Dignitary or Prebendary enjoying such separate estates in Lease, any bread money, or other money usually paid by them, except ye said Dignitary or Prebendary do make an express declaration under his hand that ye Lease which is last entered in ye Register of ye Bishop is ye Lease in being, and hath not been renewed by him.

The original copy cannot now be discovered: it is not preserved amongst the archives of the Church, nor in the Bishop of London's Registry, nor at Fulham Palace.
