Roger Whitley's Diary: September 1685

September 1685

1st. Tuesday, went to the wells & to prayers; to the Kings Head with Bellot & Lewes; drank one pinte; they dined with me & Bellots cosen, Mr Wilson; about 4 I went with my daughters to visit Mrs Cooper; she was abroad; I went to the Castle neare 7; there was Wood, Bromfield, Scotto, Cheare Radford, my sonne, Browne &c. the 2 last went first away; then came Buckley & Smith, then Wood, Scotto & Bromfield left us; then I left them, went home pat 9.

2. Wednesday, went to the wells & to prayers; Wood & Scotto dined with me; I went in the evening to bowling greene, then to the Castle; there was Wood, Bromfield, Bellot, Scotto, Browne, Lewes (& one Burdet, a stranger) we parted past 9.

3. Thursday, went to the wells & prayers; to the Kings Head to eate oysters with daughters, sonne, Bellot, Mainwaring & Lewes; dined at home; went to prayers (but too late); in the afternoone went with Wood & Scotto to the teahouse; then to take the ayre & home agen; then to the bowling greene; soe to the Castle; there was Bromfeild, Scotto, Browne, Wood, Bellot, Mainwaring, Lewes, Burnet; my sonne; stayd not, we parted past 9.

4. Friday, went to the wells & prayers; to the Kings Head to eate oysters with Lady Bellot, Wilson, Mrs Farrington, daughters, Bellot, Lewes, Burdet, Mainwaring, my sonne &c; I dined at home; in the afternoone went to prayers then to the bowling greene, there walked awhile with Crispe & to the Castle; there was Wood, Bromfeild, Scotto, Browne & Bellot; Bellot & I left them at 8, went home; there was Lewes, Burdet, Mainwaring &c; we supt, parted before 10.

5. Satorday, went to the wells & prayers; then to the Kings Head to eate oysters with Lieutenant Hughes & another officer, his friend, but a stranger to me; then home; Bellot, his Lady, Wilson, Lewes & Burdet dined with us; in the evening I went to the barbers by the tea house, thence to the Castle; there was Wood, Bromfeild, Scotto, Browne, Bellot, Mainwaring, Lewes, Burdet &c. we parted past 9.

6. Sonday, went to the wells & to chappell; dined at home; afternoone to chappell; then (with Mainwaring) to visit Lord Derby; he was abroad; then to the Castle; there was Bromfeild, Wood, Scotto, Browne & Mainwaring; parted before 10.

7. Monday, went to the wells & to prayers; to the Kings Head to eate oysters with Mr Edwyn, his wife, daughter, sonne in law & another lame gentleman (a stranger to me) then home with Mrs Cooper; she & Wood dined with me; after dinner Mr Skinner came to discourse about his coach for London; in the evening I went to see Lieutenant Hughes at the campe but he was absent; then back to the bowling greene, then to the Castle; there was Wood, Bromfeild, Scotto, Browne (a friend of his, a stranger) & Mainwaring; we parted past 9; the 3 last came back in my coach.

8.Tuesday, I went to the wells & to prayers; dined at home; in the evening I went the bowling greene & to the Castle; there was Wood, Bromfeild, Scotto, Browne, Mainwaring, Ashton, Bancks & a stranger that came with them; we parted past 9.

9. Wednesday, went to the wells & prayers; to the Kings Head to drink a pinte of Rhenish with Browne & Scotto; dined at home, Mr Parry with me; I went to prayers in the afternoone, then to the barbers (by the teahouse); Sir Charles Meredith fell downe those staires; I went to see him at the apothecaryes; then to the Kings Head where was my sonne, Bellot, Lewes & Burdet; thence I went to Lady Bellotts, then home; there was Bancks but stayd not; then to the Castle; there was Cheare, Smith Radfort, Parry & Elliot (but he stayd not) there was also Bromfeild & Scotto & Browne, Mainwaring; Bancks & Ashton came late; I left them past 10.

10. Thursday, I went to the wells & to prayers; then to the Kings Head to eate oysters with Lord Derby, his brother, Bancks, Ashton, Bellot, Mainwaring, my sonne &c; I dined at home; Bellot, Lewes, Burdet with us; I went in the evening to the bowling greene; then to the Castle; there was Lewes, Burdet, Browne, Bromfeild, Mainwaring, Bellot & Smith; I left them past 9.

11. Friday, I went to the wells & prayers; then to the Kings Head to eate oysters; there was Cheare, Radford, Smith, Lewes, Burdet, Bellot, Mainwaring, my sonne, Lewes &c. I left them, dined at home, Bellot, Bancks, Lewes, Burdet &c. with us; I went in the evening to visit Lord Derby; then to the Castle; there was Bromfeild, Browne, Lewes, Burdet, Bellot, Mainwaring, Smith, Buckley; I & Mainwaring parted past 10.

12. Satorday, I retorned with my family (all but sonne) to London; dined at Farneberough; Aston came to the roome to us; but stayd not; Bancks eate with us; we came home before 8; found Minshall there but he stayd not.

13. Sonday, went twice to church, dined at home, Minshall with us; (went past 4) to Humfreys, then to Lord Privy Seale & Lord Treasurer, they were both out of towne as the porters told me, gone to Cornebury; went thence to Mr Minshall at Grays Inne; he & Mainwaring went with me to the Bull Head; there was Baroby, Mr Baskerviles partner & a stranger with him; then came the Common Serjeant & one Emery with him; I & some of them stayd till past 10.

14. Monday, one Whitley (formerly Postmaster of Southwarke) & after him one Holyway, a taylor of Chester came to see me; but I sent them word I was busy; the first told Howseman his businesse to see if I could get him into the Post Office again; the other told him to came to towne to get work & was in work with a taylor, hearing I was in towne came to see me but would come some other tyme; I dined at home, Mrs Tovey with us; in the afternoone Mr Tuttle came to see us; I went to visit brother Peter, there was a gentlewoman with his wife; I stayd but awhile, then came Captaine Cox to see them but came no further than the doore; before I went out Saladine came to see me; then Sir G. G., his man, that his master would speake with me; I called on him at the Mermayd by Grays Inne gates; there was his sonne Sam & one Wren (a stranger to me) with him; then came Minshall; I met them agen in Grays Inne; about 6 went to the Sunne Taverne, Holborne; dranck 2 bottles, parted neare 8, went home.

15. Tuesday, Mr Tovey brought us some pills in order to Epsom waters; Houseman's mother & unkle dined with us; Mr Page let my daughter Biddolph blood in the morning; Mr Jones came to me after dinner about money from the African Company: I went in the evening to see Lady Wood at Mr Martyns, thence to Humfreys; he was abroad, then to see Mr Ward, then to the Exchange; Saladine came to me, stayd there about ½ hour, then home, stayd there all night.

16. Wednesday, Humfreys came to me, found me in bed, then the corne cutter; then Cosens the barber; I dined at home, Jones came to me after dinner; came in the afternoone (with my daughters & Mainwaring) to Epsom, lodged at Mrs Claytons.

17. Thursday, Mr Vanham, wife & daughter came to visit us in the morning; I dined at home; in the evening called at the bowling greene; went with Mainwaring & Vanham to the taverne; Alderman Wade came to us; we parted past 7; supt at home.

18 Friday, Mainwaring & I went to visit Mrs Vanam; then towards the bowling green; we saw Mr Vanham & Wade at the Kings Head taverne doore & Captaine Ashenhurst (the master of the Lottery) with them; they invited us in; Ashenhurst treated us with lobsters & 2 bottles of wine; we dined at home; I went in the evening to see Alderman Wade; he was gone to Clenche's; I found him there, dranck a bottle of wine with him & Clench; Mainwaringc came thither to us; we went home with Wade; dranck a glasse of sherry, soe home.

19 Satorday, I went to the barber's, was trimmed, dined at home; went in the evening to the Kings Head with Mainwaring & Vanham; Minshall came to us from London; went home with us.

20 Sonday, went twice to church; called in the morning at the Kings Head; had a pinte of wine; after evening sermon went to Clenche's; there was Mainwaring, Minshall, Dyas & one Hunt (a stranger to me); we parted past 7; after 10 my sonne came to us from Tunbridge.

21 Monday, Dyas, le Hunt & Minshall dined with us; then Prole came, dranck a glasse; parted before 3; about 4. S.:Hughson came to me; in the evening I went to the Kings Head; dranck a bottle with Mr Prole, Mainwaring, my sonne & Burdet; went thence to Tonsor's; dranck 3 flasques, then home.

22 Tuesday, Burdet dined with us; whilest at dinner came Bellot; in the afternoone we went to Box Hill; at night to Proles; stayd there till past 9.

Mr Bird, came to visit me; I went with him & Eyward to see the Lady Eveling's chappell; Bird & Bellot dined with us; after dinner came Burdet & Prole; then the 2 gentlewomen that lay at next doore & a yong man with them; I gave them a bottle of wine & sugar; soe took coach with my daughters for London; my sonne came on horse back, with him Mr Prole &c.; I came home before 7; after supper Minshall came & stayd with me & my sonne till past 9.

24. Thursday, Mr Jones the Scrivener came with a letter & a bill from Mr Minshall of Chester; then the neighbor barber to trimme me; I dined at home, Mainwaring & Bellot came just as we had dined; I went in the evening to Humfreys chamber; he was abroad; I met my brother & sonne walking under the trees; we presently parted; I went to Humfreys house; had a short discourse about my businesse & writings in his hands; I was in the coffee house with Saladine; desired him to write to Labreau & my sonne to Paris; I went to the Sunne taverne; there was my sonne, Bedisford & Hilman; then came Bellot & Minshall & Prole; we parted past 10; went home.

25. Friday, dined at home, Bellot & Minshall with us; we went about 5 (with Minshall) to visit the Common Serjeant; he was abroad; I went to Humfreys chamber; tooke my leave of him; then to Mr Levet, discoursed him (& Sam: Hughson with me) about the writings in his hands concerning the Hambridge lands &c. I called at the Bull Head; there was none of my acqaintance there; went to speake with Mr Oneby & Jones at the 3 Tunns; there was with me, Dr Tymms, Mr Crosse & 5 or 6 more (all strangers to me), Oneby, Tyms & my selfe payd 1 s. a peice & left them; I went home; Minshall was with us before 10.

26. Satorday, Mr Jones gave me account: that he had spoke to Oneby about the house; would give me a further answer; Vinsone the barber came to me about Jack Whitley to recommend him againe to his master & passe my word but I refused (Hussey & Hughson being by); Sir G.G. sent his man but I could not goe out; cosen Brereton of Burroughs dined with us; & Mrs Tovey & Bellot came about 4 o'clock; in the evening I went to the Kings Armes in Catteaton Street; there was Bellot & Mainwaring ; we parted past 9.

27. Sonday, twice at church; Bellot dined with us; Saladine, Lumley &c. came to see Hughson; Mrs Saladine was also here & our 2 old cooks, (William & Browne), they stayd not; I went to Mrs Tovey's; then to the taverne at the end of Fullers Rents; there was Bellot, Mainwaring, Minshall, le Hunt; Sir G.G. & Dr Moore (a stranger to me) we parted about 9.

28. Monday, Jones the Scrivener came about Oneby's businesse; I went to Bournes coffee house; there was Oneby, Jones & Timms; I called on cosen Baskervile; to discourse her about lodgings; I went to Mr Keck; then to Dones; spoke with Pigeon; dined at home, Bellot, Heron & Mainwaring with us; Minshall came after dinner; they parted before 5; Points came about his goods; then came Jones & his unkle to discourse about the house; stayd 1/2 houer; I stayd at home all night 29. Tuesday, came Points (the upholsterer) to take downe the goods; he went to speake with Oneby about the house; one Hitcham (a vintner) came to speake about Egerton's debt; I went to the Sunne Taverne; there was Bellot, Mainwaring & Abraham Dashwood; I dined at home; went at 3 with Mainwaring to the 3 Tunns; there was Oneby & Jones; wee agreed about the house; I went home, met Lady Cotton at the gate; she went in, sate awhile with my daughter & Mainwaring; I went to Lord Clarendon; there came Clargys & a minister, also Mr Shaw was sometimes in the room; Lord Clarendon came in past 7; I wisht him joy of his Governmnt of Ireland; retorned home; about 9 Mr Lewes's clarke brought me 2 old writings about the Nunns lands being free at the Kings milnes; I gave him 5 s. for his paines; another man came with him; I stayd at home.

30.Wednesday, Cosens trimmed me; Bellot dined with us; after dinner Prole; Vinsonne & Jack Whitley came; I refused to engage for him; dranck a bottle then parted; I went to see Mr Maplyn then to Humfreys; then to brother Peter, ? saw him and his ; then to the Globe taverne Holborne; there was Bellot, Mainwaring Stephens, one Dr How & Mr Howard (both strangers to me); we parted past 9; Bellot, Mainwaring & How came to Cheapside in my coach; I went home.
