November 1688

Nor: 1. Thursday, Huson went to Kelsall; Randle Ravenscroft, cosen Kate dined with us; also Traverse, Grantham, Minshall, Jackson, his wife, Bradshaw, Morgan &c; Mainwaring went past 2 towards Peover & London, Kate Ravenscroft a little before him; the rest went about 4; Minshall brought Mainwaring part of his way; apointed to meete Morgan at a bull bayte at Moldsworth; they came back at night, supt, I left them before 10.

2. Friday, Row the Quaker brought home a piece of cloth; Minshall of Bechin brought some rent &c; he dined with us; went past 3; soe did Morgan towards London; & Dick Minshall to Chester; Danily, & Wright, of Kelsall came & agreed for renewing theire Leases; stayd not; no company at night.

3. Satorday, Huson went to Chester past 9; retorned late.

4. Sonday, went to church with daughters after dinner; retorned after sermon.

5. Monday, went to church with my daughters, about 10. The Deane came home with us to dinner; soe did Taylor, & Gardiner; Hardwar & his wife also dined with us; they all went at 4; Fletcher the mason came about ?[work]; we met Mr Grantham at the stable doore; gave him a glasse of wine; parted.

6. Tuesday, Jordan came about work; soe did Capper & another about cutting wood; Salman & Williamson &c; but I could not agree with them.

7. Wednesday, I went to Chester, dined at Wrights with him, his wife, a strange woman, Minshall, Minshall of Codington & Shelley; severall of my tenants came to me; the 2 widdows Browne, Danot, Wilbraham, Bruen &c; past 2, I went to Jacksons; there was Alderman Wright, Minshall, Farington, G.Mainwaring &c; as I went away Streete came in; I left them past 4; came home past 6; before dinner I went to Angells & G.Mainwaring's; saw them & theire wifes; spoke with Cooper & Hand in the Row &c; Mainwaring retorned from Elmehurst to Peele about 8.

8. Thursday, we stayd at home, had no company.

9. Friday, Streete, G.Mainwaring, Jackson, Anderson, Nat: Lee & Minshall dined with us; they all went about 5; but Minshall stayd all night.

10. Satorday, Mainwaring & Minshall went to Chester about 10; Huson went before them; Mainwaring & Huson retorned, but late, I was in bed.

11. Sonday, we went to church in the afternoone; Traverse came back with Mainwaring supt..

12. Monday, Mainwaring went to Namptwich; Huson to Mold; Houseman & Wrench to Shotwick; Wright of Kelsall had his lease sealed in the morning; Holland, Cawley & another dined with me; theire bysinesse was to get my smith fix the militia armes; sister Lettices man brought a note from Foulkes; [fo. 99r] 13. Tuesday, Savage (Mainwaring's steward) was here, he came last night; dined in the buttry; went presently away.

14. Wednesday, Mainwaring went after dinner a shooting with Traverse, Grantham &c; retorned to supper; about 9 came Minshall & Robinson the painter, had a bottle of wine & beere; I left them past 10; went to bed..

15. Thursday, Mainwaring went early to Peover; Minshall & Robinson (about 10) to Chester.

16. Friday, Robert Lloyd came to me, to desire me write to my sonne, that his answer might be admitted (& his sons) without charge; he dined, went immediately away; Hardware came, stayd an houer; Huson retorned from Mold at night; soe did [Mainwaring?] from Peover.

17. Satorday, Huson went early towards Frodesly; Houseman & Griffith about the cattle to Chester; Mainwaring went to Chester past 9; a man came from Dysart about the copper oare & the plaisterer & his sonne, about the plaster of paris; stayd not; at night came the 2 Darby miners from Dysart; past 8, Mainwaring retorned from Chester; Bromhall with him; they eate cold meate; I left them about 10.

18. Sonday, Mainwaring came to my bedside (early, by candlelight) told me he aprehended now Lord Delamer & others had drawn some men together that he could not be safe but should be suspected & probably imprisoned, by reason of his frindship & intimacy with his Lordship; therefore was resolved to remove but whither he could not say; perhaps to make a visit to Elmehurst; perhaps elsewhere; desired me not to be unsatisfyed with it & that he had not sooner spoke to me of it & that I would endeavor to pacify his wife who was in teares & much surprised with his suddaine resolucion; soe he left me in hast & took horse &c; I rose not long after, found his wife weeping & in great disorder; did what I could to pacify her, she dined below but kept her chamber most of the day &c; this occasion & the badness of the weather kept us from church; the Deane sent his servants: with some papers for me to reade; Dr Angell came to see my daughters & children, but stayd not &c; the miners stayd all day.

19. Monday, Houseman went to Chester; the miners went homewards; Mr Kelsall, Minister of Shotwick, dined with me; went away before 2; in the evening came the 2 Lightfoots to speake about a bill Huson had for my sonne T:W: they stayd ½ an houer.

20. Tuesday, Houseman retorned from Chester; in the evening, the Vicar called; stayd an houer; & Mr Hardwar called after supper, yong Withers with him; went presently away.

21. Wednesday, in the afternoon Lady Bellott sent to see us; the Deane sent his boy with his newsletters; Sir John Crew sent Smethers to see us; there came a man (I think his name Collaton) as he said, from Sir Jeffrey Shakerly, with a certificate of losses by sea; I gave him 2s 6d, he stayd not; in the evening came in Mr Gamull of Crosse Hall about a suite depending for tyth herbage; Johnson of the Cooter came with him; they retorned to Chester; Huson came late from Frodsley.

22. Thursday, Huson & Wrench went to Shotwick; Harper to Peover, he retorned at night.

23. Friday, Houseman went to visit Sir William Aston &c; Mr Davyes of Frodsham & his churchwarden dined with me (about William Davyes money) went about 2. Bingly & 2 others brought Candles (past 3) retorned that night; Cadwallader came with venison from Frodesly late.

24. Satorday, Hughes came from Chester, past 11, to let me know the Mayor and Aldermen desired I would goe thither to day; but my Coachman was abroad; I sent my excuse &c; cosen Whitley stayd all night; Huson came late that night.

25. Sonday, It was soe fowle we could not goe to church.

26. Monday, Savage came to my daughter about 12, dined in the buttry; after dinner came the Vicar, then Mr Hardwars; then Traverse, then Bingly & Turner to buy wheate. Savage went about 2; cosen Whitley & the Vicar about 3, soone after the 2 Hardwars, then Traverse; then Bingly & Turner; Huson went to Mr John Davyes about Willimm Davyes debt & accounts &c; Sir John Delves, his man & S. Hussey came to see us, stayd all night.

27. Tuesday, I went to Chester to treate with the Deane & Chapter about my lease; I dined with them, G.Mainwaring & Foulkes; I left them past 4, went to the Quire prayers; G.Mainwaring with me; then to the Sunne; where was the Mayor & Sheriffe; then came Alderman Anderson, one Captaine Bridges (a stranger to me) Johnson, Deli: Recorder, Deane, Thame & severall others; There was great disturbance that night; the citty militia being on the guard; Colonel Gages Regiment, (8 or 9 Companyes) came in (lightmatches, musket's loaded, as was sayd &c;) some of them demanded the guard; the citty officers would not quit it, many high words past, a great bustle & confusion, many of the cittisens fell to theire armes, to prserve the peace; the streets full of the rabble & very great disorder; the Mayor & severall of us went to the Pendis to give order & keep things quiete. I left them about 10, lay at Dr Angells; afterwards the Colonel & some officers came to the Mayor; they agreed that the new Regiment: should that night lye in the Greathall &c; soe all was quieted; but the Governor (though often sent to by the Mayor) would not appeare; kept in the Castle..

28. Wednesday, I went to G.Mainwarings there was B. Cratchley, an Excise officer, Paine &c; G.Mainwaring & I went to the Deanes; there was the Prebends, Foulkes, Taylor &c; I agreed with them for my lease; went to the Mayor at the Pendis & home with him to dinner; there was Winne, G.Mainwaring, Angell, Sparke, Hilton &c; about 3 we parted; I went with him to the Pendis; thence to the funerall of Mr Fletcher; then again to the Pendis; about 8 to the Sunne with Anderson; the Mayor & others came to us, we supt; went againe to the Pendis; where was Alderman Simson (Commander of the Guard of Cittisens, Starkey with him) I left them past 11, lay at Dr Angells.

29. Thursday, I went to the Quire; then to the Deanes, then to the Chapter House; finished my lease, payd my money &c; the Deane & I went to G.Mainwarings, dined there, the Mayor, Angell &c; with us; about 2 I went to Dr Angells, then with the Mayor to Jacksons, had a bottle of wine; I left him; met G.Mainwaring then Gage, Molineux & theire officers at the doore; they saluted me; went to the coachside with me; parted there; I went home, my 2 sisters with me; I found H: Delves & his brother at Peele.

30. Friday, Huson went towards Shotwick; Delves with him; the Vicar, Bonnell & Traverse dined with us; Hardwar came after dinner; soe did Angell & my sister; they stayd all night; the rest went away; a man came from Sir John Crew; another from Lady Bellot to see us.
