Richard earl of Arundel and Eleanor daughter of Henry, earl of Lancaster. Whereas they, fearing certain dangers, contracted marriage clandestinely on Saturday in Sexagesima last, in the king's chapel at Ditton, in his presence, and that of the queen, although both of them knew that Richard had had an illegitimate son by Isabella le Despencer who, on her father's side, was in the second degree of kindred to Eleanor on her mother's side, and on their fathers' and mothers' sides respectively in the fourth and third degrees of kindred, so that they cannot remain in matrimony without a dispensation, they pray the pope to dispense them.
Granted, if the facts are as stated; the dispensation is to be given by the diocesan, the parties being for a time separated, and previously absolved from the sentence of excommunication; a good penance is to be enjoined, and three chaplaincies of 10 marks each in the parish church of the earl's principal place, are to be founded and endowed by them.
