As it pleased God, Thomas got out of his bonds, and then, assisted by some armed friends, set on John, not to kill him, for that he had expressly ordered his followers not to do, but to beat him by way of revenge, which they did so effectually that John soon after died of his wounds; after which Thomas got papal dispensation to exercise minor orders and hold a benefice without cure of souls; but as his devotion induced him to remain as he was wont in his sacred ministry, the pope is prayed to remove the stain of irregularity, and to restore him by dispensation to his orders, and to the exercise of the sacraments; or to dispense him so as to hold two benefices without cure of souls. Whereas Edward, prince of Aquitaine and Wales, during the voidance of the see of Llandaff, gave the archdeaconry of the same to his chaplain and confessor, the said Robert de Walsham, whom the pope had dispensed so as to hold two dignities with cure of souls, he doubts whether he may not be molested by papal nominees touching his right to the archdeaconry, inasmuch as six months elapsed between his collation and the resignation of it by Thomas de Elteslee, by whom it was first obtained from the pope, who gave it, as is said, to Thomas de Southam, by whom it was resigned.
