The warden or master of St. Giles without the Bar of the Old Temple, London, and the brethren and sisters of the order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, in the diocese of London. Signification that the said hospital was founded for a warden and three brethren and two sisters of the said order, and two secular chaplains, according to the disposition of the master of Burton St. Lazarus, master of the order in England, of the diocese of Lincoln, and for fourteen lepers on the nomination of the mayor and council of the city of London, and that the said hospital has suffered loss by fire and is burdened by debts, and that the lands which they used to cultivate and those let to farm to seculars are, by reason of the horrible mortality, now uncultivated, so that they are unable to maintain the fourteen lepers. Wherefore William de Cornewayle, serjeant-at-arms of the king and of Henry, duke of Lancaster, prays the pope to grant an indulgence of five years and five quadragene to those who visit the hospital and give alms for the maintenance of the poor therein.

Peter and Paul, St. Mary Magdalen, and St. Thomas of Canterbury.

Signification that he began to build a chapel in the place where the noble earl, Sir Thomas of Lancaster, his uncle, died, and in which were to be placed two or three monks from the Cluniac monastery of St. John the Evangelist, Pontefract; and as the place is in the parish of Pontefract, of whose church the prior and convent are rectors, he intends, with the pope's licence, to increase the portion for the said monks. He prays therefore for licence to do what he intends, (fn. 1) and to appropriate to the said monks the church of Slantburne, of the patronage of the said prior and convent, value 24 marks 6½d. a perpetual vicar's portion being reserved.

Signification that John, bishop of Lincoln, by special papal commission erected into a collegiate church the chapel of the hospital founded by Henry, the duke's father, in the town of Leicester near his castle, and endowed for a dean, twelve secular canons, thirteen perpetual vicars, three clerks, and six choristers, with ordinances set forth in the bishop's instrument. The duke therefore prays for confirmation of the said erection and ordinances. The wonted hospitality is not a little increased in the said hospital.

Whereas Clement VI. gave exemption from ordinary jurisdiction to the monastery of St. Werburg, Chester, the abbot William alone petitioning, without consent of the convent, so that he might the more freely give himself up to dissolute living, and whereas the assent of the prince of Wales, earl of Chester, patron of the monastery, was not obtained, nor that of the king, from whom the county of Chester is held in fee, nor that of others concerned, some of the elder monks, seeing that they could not lay their complaints before the bishop, and in view of the great injury and scandal to religion, betook themselves to other monasteries, they thereby suffering in various ways, the said prince and earl, and father Richard de Seynesburi, now abbot, the convent and lay brothers desiring that the monastery should be under the jurisdiction of the ordinary, pray the pope to issue a commission to some cardinal to inform him of the facts, and on mature consideration of the same to revoke the said exemption.
