Footnotes

  • 1. The precedence claimed by the city companies, which the author has failed in all inquiries after the foundation of, is supposed to be immemorial, according to the antiquity of their private formation and association; which in many instances are known to be long before the dates of their incorporation. Vid. Book I. p. 30, 39. On this presumption he hopes to vindicate himself from any intentional disrespect to the Surgeons company in ranking it the last in order; not knowing how to place it otherwise.
  • 2. It is a question that perhaps has never been decided, whether those freemen of the Surgeons company, who were liverymen of the company of Barber Surgeons before the separation, retain the privileges of liverymen under the new company?
